Kudos to Dave Parnell for stepping up to run the Sun Valley Open on September 8th and 9th, 2007.

Sun Valley is a fun course, and it's great to have another PDGA and SoCal Series event in San Diego County.

It'll probably fill up fast, so get those entry forms (http://sandiegoaces.com/images/pdfs/svso_flier_main_2007.pdf) in as soon as you decide you want to play this tourney.

Thanks Dave! :)

Good afternoon,

I emailed Parnell to adjust the Flyer. The dates of the event are the 8th & 9th. For anyone that has already printed the flyer, just make note that under the Schedule it should say Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th.

I would encourage everyone to sign up early. I have a feeling this event will fill up quickly.

Is there any hidden territory you are using to make 18 holes? I just can't picture 18 in there without envisioning the "Morley Mess" of 15-16-18-19.

I know you wouldn't do that to us. :) Please help me picture the 18 hole layout. TIA.

dmpdisc
Jun 12 2007, 10:42 PM
All the pictures are on the tourney page.

Fortunately, you don't have to picture it, you can come out in July and see it for yourself. Every single hole was carefully evaluted with consideration to:
1. Risk
2. Playability
3. Challenge/Fun

So, we are not going to "do" anything to anyone, other than try to make sure they have a good time. There are no crossing fairways, and only 1 semi-goofy walk between tees.

A couple areas will require the same proximity caution that Disc Golfers are used to and have seen at other SoCal courses. All in all once you step on the course the only thing you will really need to worry about is scoring.

Having said that, based on the monthy-run there is certainly room to be flexible and even scale things back and still meet the PDGA requirements.

So get ready to take yer lumps.

No worries, I hope I didn't sound LOUD!

It was a fair question, and it is important for people to know we are not going to put them in a bad situation simply for the sake of playing a few holes.

The biggest concerns I have are a semi-shared fairway similar to 5&6 at morley or 11&15&16 at HB, and another area that feels exposed like tees 7&17 at HB. Players seem to manage those ok, so I think (hope) we will be fine.

Not trying to bash any of the courses, we simply used them as models to figure out what disc golfers are reasonably used to.

Click the "view" links next to any hole on the tourney page.

Yep, a Skillshot may do. The plan is to first fill in the temp holes with as many "metallic" baskets as we can, and then use all other best options. The main goal is provide everyone an opportunity to get familiar with the layout, and of course have fun, ergo SkillShots are welcome.

For the SVO we will not need people to bring in baskets.

As for being a good TDR warmup...yeah probably, maybe use it as the TDR valve check.

Amenities??? I don't recall seeing a hot tub or bidet at either location.

Sun Valley is Disc Golf size, so they do not need or use carts. The walk will have elevation changes, so a hand cart could be nice or a burden.

Bill Richards, bless his sturdiness, plays there almost every day now and he cruises along fine.

True, there is no hot tub or bidet at Emerald Isle, but during my round on Sunday I was able to purchase a hot dog from the snack stand at the 7th tee, and then use the restroom adjacent to the 11th hole. (TMI?) Those qualify as amenities, based on my rather low standards. :D

Both courses offer gender separate indoor bathrooms. SV offers hot dogs, hamburgers, and at least 8 different hand-made-to-order sandwiches (watch'em use the deli meat slicer), in addition to snacks, ice creams, and a variety of fountain or bottled drinks, and those items are "always" available.

EI is bigger, prettier, and they have carts, but SV certainly has your defined amenities.

We are lucky that all three courses in SD county have shops with discs, drinks and food, plus bathrooms not port-o-potties.

Jul 10 2007, 06:06 PM
I like this little debate. Amenities are one thing, but as nice of a course as both courses are, the one thing that keeps me going to SV is cost. I like to play 2 or 3 rounds when I play, and at EI that can cost you $20 bucks or more whereas at SV it only costs you $3. As much as I play, I would love to play EI more but can't afford to spend $10 bucks in gas and $5-8 in greens fees each time. More than likely though, Morley will always be my favorite because it is where I learned the game and the primary location where I refine it. All 3 courses in SD are awesome and offer their own advantages, and I look forward to helping install the fourth!

The SVO is creeping up quickly, and people are probably wanting to start making arrangements for a place to stay.

The tourney website has a few motels close to the course. But the beach or Downtown aren't very far either.

SD locals usually travel up to L.A., so we know those little cost savers can help. If anyone can offer a room, camp yard, or couch let some of your traveling buddies know.

I live in a small apt, with a small L-couch if someone doesn't mind sleeping sitting up! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday, and last month, to play the monthly (SVO setup). It provided a lot of great feedback that will help ensure a terrific main event come September.

A little fine tuning and we'll be good to go! Thanks!

That said, congratulations to the divisional winners yesterday, who managed to hang on and "out last" the course and competition on a Toasty Sunday afternoon.

Results are posted at www.sandiegoaces.com (http://www.sandiegoaces.com)

We had our first Sun Valley Monthly ACE!

Gil banged #15 from the short tee (downhill heading toward maintenance & baseball field).

Even from the short tee, it's a challenging shot to throw down the tree-lined fairway to a downhill pin. I think it is interesting because you can't throw "downhill" at the pin. You need to throw straight with the right speed and distance; and as Pete Staats would say "nestle."

Great Shot Gil!

Will the course be set up on the Friday before the event?

Is SV crowded with regular golfers on Friday afternoon?

What will it cost to practice the Friday before (even if the baskets are not in place)?

Should I call ahead and book a tee time to be safe?

Great monthly, guys. The course plays tough. I shot a 59 the first round, which I wasn't that happy with nor was it super disappointing since I had never seen most of the holes. Then I felt like I was on fire for the first 17 holes of the second round, carding an "over the fence re-tee" OB 6 on the par-4 11 on my last hole, for a 53. Even though I'm far from the Worlds Best, an "on fire" "shoulda been" 51 shows that the course is pretty tough.

I was surprised that they got 18 holes in that li'l valley without any crossing fairways, and the three tees that are in danger from the previous holes' baskets have protection in place or soon to be in place. (2 has a net, 13 has a barrier wall that blows over that they are still working on, and 17 has a barrier wall.) So great job on the layout, guys!

There are tons of baskets on hillsides that I thought would be flukey, but they weren't very flukey for the 2 rounds I played them so that was good. I saw roll-a-ways on drives and upshots that didn't consider the slope when they hyzered into the hillside, but in my book that's a player issue about course management and makes the course better.

Yes, course will be available for practice Friday before event. SV will be closing the course to ball golfers Friday-afternoon thru Sunday. Exact time on Friday TBD, but I'm guessing it will be available after 3 or 4pm. I'll try to get sooner, but it may be alot to ask for a 3-day closure to golfers.

Will only cost you about $3 greens fee.

I would encourage calls to Sun Valley letting them know you are interested in playing disc golf at their course, especially for the event. It could help inspire them--and they are already pretty inspired!

Franchise,

Thanks for getting the scores/stats out so quickly. Interesting results. We also had some pretty good scores from a couple people who had to leave early.

Cent shot 50 in Rd1 before he had to make it to Charger game.

Micah (and I) shot 49 in Rd1, but then we had a 2stroke penalty at the end. I let something really goofy happen...oh well.

Micah also had a previous engagement; which was too bad, it would have been fun to try and hold on to his ankle for another round, as well as battle with Cent. I'll consider myself lucky!

I shot a -5, but played ultra conservative with 5 holes to go(Ask Nichols /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)...All I wanted to do that day was see the course, develop my strategy, get the #1 BAGTAG , and get to the Charger game in time to drink a few beers and barbecue...But it would've been interesting if Micah and I were able to stay and battle it out with you...

It should be fun to see to who gets 1st, with you, Micah, Carlo, McIntee, and the up-in-coming sensation (besides gomez) Paul McBeth, plus a solid local Pro field.

Hi,

The Sun Valley Open is just 1 week away, and it's been fun and challenging to get this far. A special thanks to all our current sponsors and players! We still have some room, mainly in the Pro divisions.

AMs
We are excited to see fairly deep Men's Am divisions; even some ladies in the house. Lots of good battles should shake out over the weekend, and there are lots of great prizes for the winners.

PROs
Hosting a bevy of talent in both the MPO and MPM divisions it will be tough to go "wire-to-wire" on the technical setup at Sun Valley. Fortunately, the winners will be rewarded, as we kick-in additional cash across all Pro divisions (weighted by div attendance)--so get on it!

Sign Up Deadline
Today is the last day to "mail" your entry in without being late. Cash/money order entries will still be accepted "in person" thru Wed night Sept 5. without being late.

All entries, from this point, may be subject to wait list--we'll try to work with you.
Anything after Wed....well you had 4 months, but you may still enter with cash & late fee if there is room.

Getting Signed-Up
David will be at Sun Valley Sunday morning (tomorrow) or stopping by Morley Field Wed Sept. 5 after 6pm. Any questions contact David direct thru sandiegoaces.com or flier info.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

This first year has been unbelievable, thanks largely to the

Our goal is not to turn folks away, but rather, properly manage their event.
That said, if anyone wants to get into a Pro Division we will forgo

Tell us about your good or crazy shots of the weekend.

I watched Ryan Stroh in Rnd 3 on Hole #11 (Par 4) attempt his shot
around the Mandy tree. He appeared to be in decent position,
setting about 30ft below the Mandy and maybe a little to the right.

He went for the "righty" sidearm hyzer and threw it up the hill
hoping it would curve toward the basket after clearing the mandy.
Something must have happened when it got up in the wind, because
a moment later Ryan was slowly turning to his left, and shaking his
head with that "what the heck" disgust as he watched his disc
fly back down the hill and land behind him about 20 ft.

The murmur of "wow," passed thru the onlooking group.

Adam Colt, regular at Emerald Isle, threw his putter on 18. As it flew over the green, we could tell it was gonna be close.
Closer and closer it got, then... DING!!! Right off the cage.
Would've been a great ace, with the dropoff and all.
Not a total loss, he ended up with the CTP that round and the next.

It was a very fun event. The final round I laid up on at least three holes instead of going for it and I ended up shooting my best score of the weekend. I saw many, many players this weekend "go for it" and end up with bogies and worse. I am sure everyone can tell horror stories of fantastic looking putts and upshots that ended up rolling away from the basket to end up OB or in some other fairway.

On another note: I only saw one player take advantage of the OB rule options. I watched many, many players miss short putts on Hole 18 and roll up to 50 feet away OB. Most took their lie off the OB line many feet away instead of from the previous lie. There were other holes where knowing this rule could prevent extra strokes. Hole 6 and 13 are prime examples. You could be putting from above the basket and end up down hill 75 feet away in an OB sand trap or green. (On 13 you would also be behind a wall of trees and rough.) It is far easier to take the OB stroke and try the putt again from above than to take a stroke or two just to get near the basket for another putt.

Would've been $100!!! Sounds like Brittany lucked out that he didn't get it first.

Turned out to be a perfect Ace setting though. Mary-Janes $100 ACE bounty about to go to waste, when Brit steps up on hole #13, last day, last round, last hole, last group on the course, and BANGs one right in front of Mary-Jane watching from the perch above 13!

MJ was so excited! She had never seen an Ace before!

It was cool to hear/see one of the ladies get to smack an Ace for a change. Way to go Brit!

I think the most interesting shot of the weekend for me was the one that Mitch threw from hole 18. It was coming right towards us and I saw it about 10 feet before it hit me and ducked it only to watch it hit Daniel in the face. Fortunately, the hat and glasses he was wearing took the brunt of the blow and aside from his face being red, Daniel was ok. It was crazy how many errant shots I saw with people going for it on 18. Good desicion not to move the pin!

I saw a perfect Anhyzer shot on hole 2. The first 3 people on the card tried various shots and all hit the trees or the fence. The fourth person on the card and I don't recall who it was stepped up and threw a perfect anhyzer shot all the way out over the dog yard, around the trees and let it glide in the wind all the way back to the basket. He was left with a 2 foot putt.

The best putt that I saw was on hole 3. The player was easily 30' to the left of the basket with a total suicide putt. He took aim, got distracted and backed away. Reset a second time, took aim and fired it fast and right into the dead center of the chains. He didn't even show any excitement, just picked up his disc with the "Yeap I hit big putts all the time" attitude. It was classic.

He yelled fore, which was how we saw it in the first place. It was a good decision because it was a tough hole. Of course I didn't want anyone to get hit. I actually hit the landing area in round 3 with a sidearm that went along the hillside on the left and came back hyzer a foot in front of the green. Didn't have the guts to go for it though.

The SVO was an amazing event. The most exciting part for me was the last 2 holes and a very close competition for the intermediate lead card.
I was shooting a "lights out" round and was catching the leaders. Dave Sawyer was leading Chris Hanau and I by 1 stroke on hole 5. Sawyer threw it down the hill taking a 4 while Chris and I saved par. The final hole (hole 6) had a 3 way tie for first place. Chris and I "go for it" and put it on the hillside. I believe it was Don who gave us both the safe signal. Then Dave Sawyer threw one onto the green.
Chris and I were ~20 feet past the basket and ~40 feet down the hill. My shot was furthest away. I would normally lay this one up, but something was telling me that I would never live this one down if I just laid up and Chris nailed. I had a mental strugle having my body tell me to go for it and my mind telling me to just lay it up. Finally I pumped up and fired. It nailed solid chains. That was by far my biggest putt of the weekend. This forced Chris Hanau to go for it. He made it seem much easier, stepped up and nailed it too. I was excited for both of us.
Ask anyone who saw these putts, this was the most excited I have ever experienced in a disc golf round. I hope I didn't disturb too many other players with my whooting and cheering.
I wish I could have given Chris a better challenge during the playoffs.

It's customary to hold a "celebrity roast" in honor of the person who the tournament is named after.

That should be fun!!

I wonder how much sponsorship will be required to change the name of the event?

Thank you for all your support this year Donny! It was greatly appreciated and helped make this first event very exciting. Are you on board as a sponsor for next year? We would love to have your name on the tournament discs again.

Good afternoon,

As some of you may be aware, Holeman Surf Design was one of the major sponsors for the 2007 Sun Valley Open. Not only did they sponsor a Tee-Sign, but they also provided some of the custom made jewelry that the ladies recieved. What you may not know was the behind the scenes. Without Holeman Surf Designs we would not have been able to pick up the quality baskets that were provided by Socal Disc Golf. Basically Holeman Surf design closed down their business for a day by providing us the use of their work truck. All so we could enjoy the sport we love! Their support of the 2007 Sun Valley Open was outstanding.

Holeman Surf Designs has also signed up as a sponsor for the 2008 Sun Valley Open!

Now, it is our turn to help support Holeman Surf Design. Andrea Holeman is going to be walking in the 3 Day Breast Cancer Walk on November 9-11 2007. A friend of the Holeman and Hockaday family recently passed away and Andrea has decided to do the 3 Day walk in honor of the family friend. She is currently seeking donations and sponsorship to help raise money to find a cure for Breast Cancer. If you would like to make a donation to help find a cure for Breast Cancer it would be very much appreciated. Lets show some support for one of our sponsors while at the same time helping our community! Please follow the link below if you are interested.

If you make a donation, Let them know your one of the Disc Golfers!

Hi All,

It took some time to get all the photos, go through them, and then find some place to put'em, but at long last here are the event photos:

Photo Gallery - Sun Valley Open 2007 (http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r61/rydordy/Sun%20Valley%20Open%202007/)

We would again like to Thank our Sponsors, as well as all the players who attended this awesome event. We hope the photo gallery will bring back some of the fun memories for those who battled all weekend at the SVO. If you were not there we'll see you next year!
