New Thread for the Park...
The course website is www.wolfriders.com (http://www.wolfriders.com) ... I hope everyone will check it out and let me know what you think. after I finish the sketches for all the teesigns, I will add a scorecard to the site.
The park is getting better every week. We will be framing teeboxes in the next few weeks and hope to get those poured and teesigns installed by the middle of March.
I am trying to keep up with all aces in the park so if you hit an ace, please let me know.
I will be scheduling some workdays soon to finish up hole 15 and any other small clean up efforts. I am also working on plans to add several bridges to the course.
If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Now that the course is practically done, I can't wait to see everyone out and about.

Made my first trip to "Briar", I mean Bryan McCkain Park yesterday and had a great time. the course is going to be a lot of fun. Just needs some more clearing which they are working on and a couple bridges and an elevator on I think it is #5 and it will be just right for an old man to play. Don't get off the fairway or else it will be "Welcome to Briar McClain"!! Go try it and have some fun if you have not already.

Played for the first time today. First please put some directions on your website. I'll add a link to lodga.com for it. For out of towners, google Longs Creek Elementery to get an address. #1 is behind the school.
Second, we need to do some serious trimming and clearing there if we want to get in in shape for LOSO. Need more clearing around the tee boxes and baskets for sure. Right now, it's just not tournament ready. Definitely need to get the New Braunfels boys involved. I'd recommend anyone who plays it casually to carry some scissor type shears with them to cut briars down as they play. This really helpled at UC.
Third, the layout is nice, the baskets are beautiful, huge trees, great potential. Once it gets beat in, it will be a must play course. Remember Live Oak guys and how rough it was for the first two years, so give it time to mature.
It's going to be a good one, thanks guys for getting this in the ground!

I'm working on a map to the course as we speak. I would like to have a workday this sunday for anyone who can make it. working on hole 15. I beleive there is a mini at the course on Saturday and don't want to interfere with it. Brian is right about the clean up but with a few good work days to clear out the briar... I think it can get there.

i was just in corpus for a workday at waldron park (looking to be a nice 9-holes) and we got quite a bit done. here's the kicker: 12 people showed up (thats like 1/3 of the 3rd coast club members). with that many hands, the work went quick; so if enough people show up, i'm sure a couple of fairways can be knocked out before lunch.

Please talk it up at Saturday's McClain mini too, I can't make it Saturday. I have some survey flags, and may go out there this afternoon to help mark walkways from baskets to tee boxes if I can remember the way. That should help on Saturday.

Chris, I did not take my cart when I played it and I am very glad I didn't. It definately is not cart friendly at this time. There is one place for sure and possibly one other. You have to cross a creek several times. Some are not too bad. I probably will be using my bag on that course for a while. It is a fun course and is going to be great as they make improvements almost daily.

Did some cleaning at McLain today... hole 5. Larry and Tracy did some cutting, starting to look good.
The leaning tree on hole 5 was left because the city did not want it removed. I talked to Larry and Shawn about taking down the large tree that was blocking the left side of 5, Wayne and I did this last weekend. I told them the one next to it had to stay for now. I dont have a lot of heartburn over it because it wasnt part of the original plan but the city might. On the other hand the trees cut down on 4 today were purposely not removed. They were a specific part of that holes design. The skinny oak leaning at the end of hole 9, which was also cut down without consultation, was supposed to be staked so it could become the replacement for the two trees it was next to.
Dont get me wrong... help is appreciated, but cutting trees frivolously has potential to mess up the design and, even worse, goes against city park mandates. The city made an agreement with Wayne and I on tree removal. We had to get a tree permit to cut down what was needed. There are even several tree species the city specifically wanted us to keep at all cost. We walked the course with the city Arborist and this was given a high degree of emphasis. The removal of trees and having the permit was an integral part in getting the city to approve the current design.
The tee signs are being completed as we speak. The sign for hole 4 illustrated the trees near the basket. This sign is now incorrect. The city has finalized their tee sign order and expect to have the tee boxes in by mid march.
Removing briar is great... but DO NOT REMOVE ANYMORE TREES. I am trying not to be rude because I know it was not done maliciously but seeing the changes to hole 4 was unexpected. All I am asking is people get consent before changing the flow of a hole. Brian previously posted there was a lot of clearing left and I should have mentioned the tree restrictions at that time. If anyone wants to go out and clear anything please limit your efforts to briar or scrub brush. If you really want to cut something down, we can clear 20 ft each side of the yellow tape marking the center of 15s fairway.

Feb 07 2007, 12:12 PM
I'm just the briar clearing guy :) I hate those suckers. I'll talk to Larry today, but I think all they wanted to do now was cut some more scrub trees in each of the fairways, and maybe widen some of the walking paths between holes. When they cut UC up, I put ribbon around trees I didn't want touched, maybe we can do that Sunday afternoon, cuz I think they are going back out there after the UC mini. Shawn I'm sending you Larry's cell # via PM too, you should call him and give him your parameters (they do not have Internet access). They can cut down a small forest in a few hours, I've seen it! ;)

The retaining wall is almost done around the tee box for 1. There will actually be three sections of the wall so the construction will continue for another week or so, but the upper level is all we need to frame in the tee box.
Hope everyone can make the mini on Saturday and the workday on Sunday.

This weekend we were able to cut in hole 15 completely. the tee box has been moved to the intended position. Don't be scared though, we intent to cut a few more branches to raise the ceiling... and take out a few more trees on the right at the end of the fairway. We will wait for the city to remove the massive brush pile we created before we clear anything else. I was also able to repair and mortar the wall on hole 3. I will backfill it and level the area over the next week or so. please don't walk on the wall until I can get the dirt filled in.

For future workdays... what time and days work best for everyone... In order to get the course ready for LOSO... we need to have a couple of days with big groups to finish the little things... clearing the briar, clearing some underbrush to make the rough a little less rough, drag trash/cut brush out of the way, cut stumps. If everyone will let me know what works for them... I can try to schedule the workdays at those times.
Also, I have added the ability to post your scores on the www.mcclainpark.com (http://www.mcclainpark.com) website. I will slowly make the page more functional with searches and sorting... but for now you can post your stuff and see everyone elses postings as well.

I called today about Nani. They appreciated the call and said that they were working on all of the parks as quick as possible. Everybody from around the city is calling after the recent rains. From what I gather, they are concentrating on the inner parks because of the Easter Holiday camping, but will get to the others ASAP.
As Brian said, be nice. They will get to it, but the more phone calls that are done right, the more they will see how the park is used and then maybe we will see maintenance done at a more steady rate.
I think the main thing that caught them off guard , was all the rain that happened in the two week period at the end of March. I know it is an inconvience, but SA is large and the P&R department have over 120 parks that they have to take care of, not like just 1 park each that Live Oak and Universal City have and that their P&R can dedicate the efforts to.

That's the way I unserstand it also. I believe that there are two different contracts, one for the smaller jobs and one for the larger fields. The larger one is contracted out through the City of SA maintenance department. These are the big tractor mowers you see doing the drainage ditches, and street and Hiway medians and right-of-ways. I know when Nani first came in, it went unmowed for a long time and the grass and weeks were high, but then all of a sudden it was being mowed on a regular bases, especially after they hydro-mulched. Give them a chance to get on the schedule and time to clean up after these rains.
On another note, the rattlesnake that I saw out there hasn't been the only snake spotted. Remeber that this is new territory for us and that we are invading their space and until more foot traffic becomes the norm, they will stay around, eventually they will leave, but be careful until then.

The city is supposed to keep it mowed. if the regular mow schedule is not enough... I can talk to them about stepping it up. I also want to make sure the park stays playable and in good shape. Are Sundays good workdays for everyone? There will need to be several over the next couple months to make sure the park is ready for LOSO. I am still working on the city to help out with bridges. So does this park always play so muddy and wet? Oh and is walking across the tree the only way to get to the basket on hole 5

Not always, just after it rains :DTo the right of the downed tree on 5, there are a few boards/rocks to get across. I think this is one of the places Shawn wants a bridge.

I aready have plans mysef for saturday but will be out there sunday morning. Anyone who wants to go out saturday... I think the top priorities are clearing out briar on 13 basket and 9 basket. the right side of 17s fairway.
I plan on clearing low branches on 13 and the left side of 17s basket on sunday.
The city may have me design another course and I basically told them that I would consider doing it in exchange for putting more money into McCain Park. We will see.

Yeah, that briar was nasty...there's still a lot that need to be done, and the more hands the better. If 4 of us can clear one green in 2 hours (I think we were there longer than that...seemed it anyway) then it'll take an army to get the rest done in time for LOSO.

I did not meet with Steve from SA Parks and Rec because he had an Emergency. I did speak with him on the phone and we rescheduled for Friday. He said his guys were going to be out at McClain today so I went over there after work to see how the course looks. There were three guys out there mowing Holes 1, 2 and 10. One of them told me it took him three hours to mow hole 2's fairway. They did do the fairways on those holes but I think they could use a little more. The worst holes on the course are Hole 3 (entire fairway), Hole 4 (Around the Basket Area), Hole 10 (Could mow Fairway Wider), Hole 11 (Needs Mowing), Hole 14 (Really Tall Weeds Around Basket Area), Hole 17 (Outta Control, 8-10 Ft Tall Sunflowers on Fairway), Hole 18 (Tall Weeds/Grass).
All holes need some work but the ones listed above need more. I think we could actually play this course next week if we have a workday with 10-15 people on Saturday. There was a tree that fell on Hole 5's fairway and another large limb on Hole 12. Shawn, What time are you going out there on Saturday?
Didn't see any discs in the baskets, nothing but lizards and spiders in them. :(

The work day went great. we mowed the fairway on 18 and cleared more around the basket by raising the ceiling on those cedar. cut down the sunflowers on hole 10 and mowed the fairway on 11. Bird and Stacey were going to continue on hole 12. BIG thanks to Dave (Dr. Safety) and Jeff for making it out and REALLY BIG thanks to Bird and Stacey for making it out and bringing water.
If it takes beer to get 10 or 15 people out for a work day... I'll buy. a good work day or two with 10 to 15 people and this course will easily be playable all the way through again. PLUS the more people to call the city and ask them to keep up with the mowing the better.
In other news... the tee signs have been delivered and we will schedule the install as soon as the tee pads are done... which by the way the crew was out this morning forming up tee pads as well. There is a lot of great progress going on in the park. We just have to keep the momentum going.

Stacey, Todd and I cleared Hole # 3's Fairway. A couple of machete's, a couple of hours and a couple of blisters was all it took. Really all joking aside, it was hard work but when I walked back to the Tee Box and could actually see the basket, that was rewarding itself. I will call and email the city about the mowing again tomorrow but more people still need to call. A couple of guys said they saw some hornets on hole three right side of fairway about 1/3 of the way up. Be careful and Thanks Again to everyone that has helped with this course.

first of all... Geoff, sorry for butchering your name in the previous post.
Updates:
hole three looks better, but it still could use some mow action. I am sure it was a lot of hard work knowing what it looked like when you started. a mower would have never gotten through there before the work you guys did.
11 tee boxes have been formed and the contractors were pouring concrete on most of them. only 6 left.
I redesigned the mcclain website in an attempt to make it more user freindly and changed the comments section to a forum. let me know how you like it.
I know a lot of people read the PDGA site and aren't members so they can't post (or at least I think that's how it works)... you can register on the mcclain site and post all you want.
The forum includes a topic for lost and found right now but I am still thinking about breaking it out and creating someway to allow the finder to notify the loser.
The score section is the same but will get a facelift soon as well. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather, the course and the new site.
Wayne and I will be out this saturday to work for about 2 hours and then we plan on attempting to play. don't know if we will tackle the sunflowers on hole 17 or hole 14...

The course was mowed for the most part...I played through what I could, then walked the back 9 backwards.
1 - Great shape.
2 - Half the fairway got cut, still pretty soggy
3 - half a fairway, no route to hole 4
4 - the green needs some attention
5 - couldn't get to it
6 - skipped also
7 - good shape
8 - a little overgrown, nothing major
9 - green needs attention
10 - great
11 - a little more mowing couldn't hurt
12 - good for the most part
13 - lots of mowing needed
14 - lots more mowing (I really like this hole, but it needs the most TLC)
15 - green needs attention
16 - green needs attention
17 - there's an 8' wide fairway, lots of mowing needed
18 - skipped, but a path to the green was cut
After teesigns, bridges need to go in on 3, 4>5, 5, and 17. Is the city springing for those?

Played holes 1-10 today at McClain (skipped #2, too wet, small fairway). The city is trying and I am happy to see that. Work still needs to be done but you can go and play most of the holes out there. We stepped on those long thick weeds as we played and the course is actually a little better to play than when we did. Still not ready for minis. :( We'll get there.
Geoffrey had a good idea....we should work on one hole at a time on workdays. All people work on the same hole and if we get done with that one, move on to the next.

something to help get the material to the holes would be nice. I plan on renting the auger still to make things go quickly. I have 9 gallon jugs of water so we will need nine more. Also, Bird, if you can come by my house that morning to pick up half the material... I can't hall it all in my truck in one load.
As for the bridges... the city is not springing for those. They asked that any bridges we want to put in be submitted to the parks department for approval because they will be help liable if they don't meet code or if someone gets hurt. Alma with the parks department is still trying to scrape up some funding to help with bridges, but nothing yet.
have they cleared out the brush piles on 15 and 17 yet?
No brush has been hauled. I spoke with SA Parks a few minutes ago and they plan on going out on Sat with the tractor. Then on the following weekend they plan on getting a community service group out there. Steve said that once the park is to our liking then he can concentrate on other projects like brush piles and any trees that need triming.

Hey Shawn, I will be able to help haul equipment with my truck just need you to PM me your address.
About the bridges....Geoff had another good idea for them. In Kyle, they have those concrete sewer tubes where the water can flow through and people can walk across them. The trees that fell on Hole 5 in the creek have dammed it up pretty good. We need to get that tree and debris out of there. It is causing water to stay in the Park.

This should be one of the first priorities, in my opinion. The erosion is already noticeable on hole 7's tee area. The city will most likely have to be involved since that trunk is about 4 feet around. With the water level down it's easy to see that all the water on the course is diverted here but has nowhere to go.

Aug 30 2007, 09:27 PM
Ok, I stopped by today thinking I could make a dent in the drainage situation, but it's worse than we originally thought. The water doesn't drain where the creek meets the road on the left. It follows the road back toward the tee even with about the middle of the fairway. I'm going to sketch a picture...
http://www.isarapix.com/pix11/1188521453.png
The arrows point to where the water should run under the road. If we could get water to it, it would drain like gangbusters. The problem is the way the ground has eroded there and the height of the culvert. Because of all the debris and conditions in that area, the water reaches a certain height where it just pools and any overflow has to drain back over the fairway. Granted, we have had twice the rain already for a normal year, so it's like the worst case scenario.
I walked across the road to look at the other side of the drainage area, and I see no reason why hole 5 shouldn't look half as good as that park area.

can we get Steve to focus on this area when he brings out the community service workers... this seems to be a bigger issue than the brush piles. Did he say what he planned on using the community service workers for? sorry if I missed that part of your post.
I think if they could take out all those fallen trees except the big oak. it was intended to be part of the original design before it fell and with the size of it, I just don't think the city would try to take it out. The city arborist would probably pitch a fit and I think it also breaks the city tree ordinance since it's an oak. they were very picky when they gave me the limit clearing permit.
The auger I plan on renting for the tee sign install should come with a trenching attachment. if time permits, I plan on putting a small trench down the left side of 2 fairway to help direct the water.
how wet is that fairway? is there still water sitting in the ditch in the the right of way?
opereida
Aug 31 2007, 05:04 PM
You don't think the city would remove a tree that has fallen, no matter what kind it is?
Hole 2's fairway is soaked pretty bad and smells bad. That is the reason they only mowed the right side. Hole 5 also has lots of water on the fairway. We'll see if all of us can come up with some kind of temporary solution for this problem on the 8th.
Steve with SA Parks came by my office today to go over the site plan and marking tape. We can mark areas in need because, honestly, they have no idea how the park should look. Things are shapin' up...............minus the rain.

it seems like the typical "Plan a work day at McClain and it's gonna rain"...
I think it's 40 to 50 percent everyday through the weekend. I don't thing the auger will make it through the mud. does anyone own post hole diggers? As long as it's not raining ON saturday, I say we still try to get them in the ground. Also, let me know who has cordless drills.
as for the tree stuff... I was told that the city arborist if very particular about removing trees, even ones that have fallen. The only thing she didn't care about was cedar. Besides, I think the big leaning oak would look great if all the other trees were removed.

Have you been out there lately? The oak isn't so much "leaning" as it is "on the ground." I agree it would have looked good, but as it is now, it just looks like a mess of brush in stagnant water.
I say we try to do what we can on Sat.
Talked to SA Parks today......told Steve about the Tee Sign work day and he is planning on getting a crew out there to help and we can help direct on any problem areas.
We spoke briefly about the drainage and if it's the city drainage easement it will have to go. Steve is drafting a proposal to the city on drainage problems.
It's good to see everyone coming together. Maybe, in the future, we can plant a new oak tree on Earth Day or something. I love nature too , but, water back ups are very damaging. We'll miss you old leaning tree :(
I need to get out there sometime this week to mark some problem areas or maybe I'll just wait until Sat.

I know it has rained alot but we need to do something about it soon.......
I went out to McClain today to mark the fairways so the city knows how wide to mow them. I marked what I could on Hole 2 and that was it. The fairway is soooooooooo full of water that is really nasty and stinks when you step in it. Hole 1 is getting there too. I can't even imagine how the rest of the course looks. I say postpone the Tee Sign install and lets still meet this Saturday but work on trying to come up with a fix or temporary fix on getting this water to drain out of the park because this is going to happen with every storm that passes through. Bryan McClain Park is just in a really, really low spot and all the water drains right into Hole 1 and stays flowing in the park. Even with Tee Signs and mowed grass, we still would get to Hole 2 turn around and go play somewhere else because of the water. This is my opinion and I think this should be First Priority.

I don't think it would be this bad if it wasn't for the non-stop rain. Wayne and I worked on the park the entire year last year and hardly ever had these issues.
If the trees need to be pulled in order to help the drainage, that's cool. It's just sad. I love oak trees. I walked the back nine Sunday morning and it was actually in fair shape. it could surely use more mowing. the old deck that had been used as a bridge on hole 14 finally made its way into the creek on 16. The old washing machine moved from the left side of the creek to the right side as well. If we want to postpone the tee sign installs, that's ok with me but I would have a huge favor to ask you Bird... I will send you a PM.
is the grass at least clear enough on hole two for us to try and cut some sort of drainage ourselves?
JerryChesterson
Sep 05 2007, 09:24 AM
Is the downed tree the reason it won't drain? If so then could it be pulled or moved enough to allow some draining using a Jeep? If so we can take my Jeep back there and pull it out.

Shawn - Saturday for the workday, right? 8:00ish? I will be there.
Scott - It's pretty hard to try to explain, I doubt pictures would even be much help. To understand what's happening you really have to see it yourself. The downed tree is not THE problem, but it isn't making matters any better. I was surprised when I snooped around and saw what was going on there. It's a mess, but nothing we can't fix.
The best way to hole five (coming from 1604) is to pass the school and take a right into the park's parking area (under the power lines) and cross the street. the grass is a little high, but don't think about snakes and you'll be ok.
Stacy & Bird - way to stay on top of things with the city. Thanks, guys!

Bird - Nice job on marking the 2nd fairway. When it gets mowed the that line it will be nice.
All - I went out there today to investigate again. The drainage problem is bad but I don't think it is related to the downed trees since it drains closer to the tee box. Some of the park is draining correctly. I went to the other side of the road where it drains to and there is running water over there, so it is draining. The problem is the stagnet water from near 5's basket that also goes past all of hole 6 and near the tee box for hole 7.
How do we divert that stagnet water to the area that is draing correctly? Once diverted how do we prevent it from happening again each time it rains?
Also, do we have a task list of things that need done? This may just be the project manager in me (that's what I do for a living) but I think we need a task list of things that need to be done. This will provide a couple of benefits:
1) Anyone of us can look at the task list and pick things off one by one on non-work days in our spare time.
2) By documenting the tasks to be done, we make sure they all get done.
3) On work days it will help make sure we a lot of stuff to do. So if the city has a work crew out there we can just give them a list or partial list of task and say have at it.
4) Will allow us to keep a record of all the work we are putting into the course so the City and others know we are serious about this course.
So if you all think it is a good idea I've created an online task list for us all ot use. It is free. Here are the details:
URL: http://www.onlinetasklist.com/
Username: AlamoDiscGolf
Password: McClain
It is pretty self explanatory on how to create, edit, delete, and close a task. I added one open task and one closed task to show how it works. Feel free to have at it by adding tasks. Or another thought is for whoever runs the website to put a task list on there that some of us can access. Either way I think a task list is a good idea.
Enough rambling.

I think we can do something simple on hole 3 as far as a bridge goes... there is a section to the left as you approach the tee box that is narrow and would support a bridge like this. it was the original fairway before the property line became an issue. It's basically two I beams in concrete footers with teated 2x6 bolted to the top and then teated planks screwed to the top.

If you want a cheap easy solution, take two wooden telephone poles and cut them to the desired length and use them as the horizontal supports. Bolt or screw rail road ties or some 2x8's to the top of your telephone pieces and use them as walking boards. There is a course in San Marcos that has a bridge like this on it and it is used to cross a water filled ditch on your way to the next hole.

Okay, today was a great workday at McClain as we had around 10 Disc Golfers and about 15 Community Service workers show up. I believe all Tee Sign posts were installed and Stacey and I will finish the rest of the actual signs tomorrow. Lots of mowing and weedeating went on. When we were leaving I walked through some of the holes and they look great. We also dug small trenches to allow water to drain out of 2's fairway. Steve C. with SAPAR called Stacey this evening and told her that there will be a work crew out there on every Saturday for the next 4-6 weeks until everything gets done. :) Johnny from SAPAR will be out there tomorrow with the big tractor to do some more mowing, maybe 2 will be drier so he can mow some of that. This is all great news and I am sure the city is going to come through and start maintaining the course. Thanks to all who helped out today, You Guy's ROC!!!
