I'm new to the GPS game. I just learned how to add the parking lot next to hole # 1 as a POI (point of intersest) on my personal GPS unit.
Are there any on-going efforts to gather similar data for each course and place on a POI-sharing website? Would make finding courses during travel much easier. (If it works like I think it works??)
I am not aware of anything like that already on the PDGA website.
Ideas?

The lat/lon coordinates for the first tee are provided for many courses already in the PDGA Course Directory. Since you have a GPS, you can help by providing them for courses near you that don't have them in the directory yet.

Chuck,
I've used the lat/lon several times to find a new course. But, sometimes it seems the parking lot gives more direct actual driving directions.
I guess that is why I marked the parking lot for a local course as a waypoint for the GPS,
I'm not sure I understand how to transfer info from the website course lat/lon to my GPS "favorite places". Or the other way around.
I guess that is why I asked about using a 3rd party POI-sharing website. I almost understand that.

Quick search shows the format gaining ground as the sharing standard is the GPX format and there are converters readily available to convert from that format to whatever format may be needed to import the files to most GPS units.
Maybe we can generate a POI file that includes all of the courses we have vaild GPS info on in the directory.

I found this website for starting a POI "collection". I'm sure there are more. Anybody ever fool with this stuff? Looks rather do-able.

Since the PDGA already has a database it would not be too hard to Join a file with spatial data to the current database. This would allow you to create an interactive map using GIS.
I mapped a new disc golf course we built in Iowa City with a GPS receiver, and then I created the course map in Arcview (a GIS program). I logged the boundaries of each hole, the paths, baskets, tees, woods, grassland, and surrounding areas using the GPS reciever. The GPS gave me accurate distances for the holes within a few feet.
