My favorite part...

While city skate parks are the result of a big push by the local skating community, there wasn't a similar effort made by the public to get disc golf courses, Stover said.

"In fact, a lot of the public isn't familiar with disc golf," he said.

Maybe that was when only two people showed up to the city meeting on disc golf. :(

i think this had to be my favorite part.

Dad Greg, mom Sarah and sons Austin, 14; Ethan, 12; and Adam, 11, were so impressed after two outings to the disc golf course that the boys requested regulation discs for Christmas.

that is how we are going to grow this sport we love here in the city we live.

Allow me to pick the brain of LODGA's finest....

When the disc come to rest, does it matter what part of body needs to be directly behind the disc? I know that you have to behind the lie but can it be your hand or arm, instead of your foot or knee DIRECLTY behind? The question came up and I had no answer. I let them use their hand and lean out to make a shot. But not sure what the rule was.

CGPRush
Mar 23 2007, 12:21 PM
I'm not sure but I think the relevant rule says something like "point of contact" which could be foot, hand, nose, the left cheek, whatever ....

coda_hatfield
Mar 23 2007, 01:27 PM
When inside of 33ft you must show balance with you foremost supporting point. Outside of 33ft you just have to let the disc go before leaving the ground or at least within 11in of your mini.

coda_hatfield

803.04 Stance, Subsequent to Teeing Off
A. When the disc is released, a player must:
(1) Have at least one supporting point that is in contact with the playing surface on the line of play and within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc (except as specified in 803.04 E); and,
(2) have no supporting point contact with the marker disc or any object closer to the hole than the rear edge of the marker disc; and,
(3) have all of his or her supporting points in-bounds.

B. Stepping past the marker disc is permitted after the disc is released, except when putting within 10 meters.

C. Any throw from within 10 meters or less, as measured from the rear of the marker disc to the base of the hole, is considered a putt. A follow-through after a putt that causes the thrower to make any supporting point contact closer to the hole than the rear edge of the marker disc constitutes a falling putt and is considered a stance violation . The player must demonstrate full control of balance before advancing toward the hole.

D. A player must choose the stance that will result in the least movement of any part of any obstacle that is a permanent or integral part of the course.

E. If a large solid obstacle prevents a player from taking a legal stance within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc, the player shall take his or her stance immediately behind that obstacle on the line of play. The player must comply with all the provisions of 803.04 A other than being within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc.

F. A stance violation must be clearly called within three seconds after the infraction to be valid. The call may be made by any member of the group or an official. When the call is made by a member of the group, it must subsequently be confirmed by another member of the group. A player shall receive a warning for the first violation of a stance rule in the round. Subsequent violations of a stance rule in the same round shall incur a one-throw penalty.

G. Any throw that involves a validly called and seconded stance violation may not be used by the thrower. Re-throws must be taken from the original lie, prior to subsequent play by others in the group.

H. The player may not retrieve the originally thrown disc prior to the re-throw, except in the case of a putt from within 10 meters. Where a disc is retrieved in violation of this rule, a one throw penalty shall be imposed without a warning.

This might offend someone or more than someone, but here goes.

I was in Nick's the other day looking to at their 'used' disc collection. On the back of about 80% of those discs were names and phone numbers. I got two of those discs because I knew the players and have since contacted them. My main concern or grip is that what 'we' call our discs are now being sold to others. There have been many discussions on this board about people who find discs in the water or other places and do not try and get the discs back to the owners.

My question is this...Is Nick's selling stolen merchandise?

I talked with the lady in the store and she indicated that she had no intentions to get the discs back to the rightful owner. I told her what many of the 'Play It Again Sports' do and how they handle the lost disc problem. I even suggested that she start something like this and in this manner she would have customers who came in to claim their disc and be a shopper also. She did not seem interested.

The discs are $2 each and I do not mind paying a 'finder' see for my lost discs if I am contacted about it, but I do mind that they are selling discs that have other peoples names on them with contact info. I got the two that I wanted and I am getting them back to the owners, that is what I do for friends. I also understand that they are the only shop in the area that sells discs with the exception of Academy, and that we are trying to support them in this endeavor, but until this policy changes on their part I will not grace their premises again. If this policy changes, then I will be back.

Maybe if other go in and talk to them about getting these discs back to the rightful owners with a 'finders fee' attached then they will change this policy. Maybe they need a lost and found box also, again this was not well perceived on their part.

Unfortunately you have to hit every Academy in town to build a decent bag. You can also try Hibbets at the Forum, They may not have a wide selection but they do stock a few discs that Academy doesn't. Also the head shop on Austin Highway. I suppose Marshall St, will still get the bulk of my business, or Joel Kelly when I want a one of a kind dye job.

She said that they got the discs from one person who had said that 'he had gone swiming' for them. She said that she gave him some 'merchandise' for them so she 'bought' them from him. She could not remember her name.

AS for me needing to buy discs....remember, I have my source and can get them any time that I need. :D:D So I am not looking for a retail outlet, I was just looking for some of my lost discs, th main one is a CE JLS with a star on the bottom of the rim.

The City of SA parks and rec will be hosting three town meetings to discuss the master planning of their latest park. Voelker Park will have 311 acres to work with.

YOU can participate at the following locations:
Monday, Oct. 22: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bode Community Center @ Highland Park 901 Rigsby Ave.
Tuesday, October 23: 7 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. Jewish Community Center 12500 NW Military Highway
Wednesday, Oct. 24: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Harlandale Community Center @ Harlandale Park 7227 Briar Place.

I will be proposing among other things, A TOURNAMENT CALIBER COURSE(s), but the more requests from other golfers would only help the cause.

This is something I would definitely come back for :D

Seriously, the property begs for a DG course (or two?) I didn't have time to read through the whole site, but it sounds like they are starting the park from scratch? Is there any program the city is mandating, i.e. ball courts, soccer fields, hike and bike, dog park, etc.? Or is the entire 300+ acres up for grabs?

Anyone know how many acres are in LO City Park, for a reference?

Joe
Oct 19 2007, 01:47 PM
LO city park has approx. 70 acres stretched from the pool to the lake. SA IS looking for feedback to develop Voelker from scratch. There is a some historical value to this site that can/may lend to the final master planning. Because of this, it may impact some of the ideas, but you never know..

BTW, what is a Charette?

The term charette evolved from a pre-1900 exercise at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in France. Architectural students were given a design problem to solve within an allotted time. When that time was up, the students would rush their drawings from the studio to the Ecole in a cart called a charrette. Students often jumped in the cart to finish drawings on the way. The term evolved to refer to the intense design exercise itself. Today it refers to a creative process akin to visual brainstorming that is used by design professionals to develop solutions to a design problem within a limited timeframe.

DISC GOLF IN VOELKER PARK :

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Live Oak Disc Golf Alliance, a not-for-profit organization composed of Live Oak, Universal City, San Antonio, New Braunfels, and other surrounding area disc golf players, is proposing the installation of an 18-hole disc golf course in Voelker Park. Below are some commonly asked questions about the proposal.

What Is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is played like traditional golf, only instead of hitting a ball into a hole you throw a plastic disc (similar to a Frisbee) into an elevated metal basket. The goal is the same: to complete the course in the fewest number of shots. A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to the basket, which is the "hole". As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. The existing trees, shrubs and terrain changes in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles. Finally, the "putt" lands in the basket and the hole has been completed. Disc golf also shares many of the etiquette and procedural rules of traditional golf. For example, players must be quiet and still while other players are throwing.

Why Have Parks Departments Chosen Disc Golf?

There are now around 800 disc golf courses in the US and Canada, most installed by city and county parks departments. They have found that there are few recreational activities that offer the high benefit-to-cost ratio of disc golf. Disc golf has low capital and maintenance costs, is environmentally sound, is played year-round, co-exists successfully with other park uses (such as dog-walking and hiking) and is enjoyed by beginners of all ages.

Who Can Play?

The simple answer is that everyone can. In studies measuring recreational activities, "throwing a Frisbee" has consistently been a top-ten activity. A disc golf course serves a broader portion of the community than many narrower interest activities with higher cost, skill or fitness levels required to participate. Men and women, young and old, families with small children -- all can play disc golf. Given the density of middle and high schools in the surrounding area, a course would give youth in the neighborhood a healthy and challenging outlet for their energies. Towards this end, the Club will work with the Parks Department and athletic directors from neighborhood schools to organize clinics and youth leagues.

How Much Will It Cost To Play? How Much Will It Cost to Build?

The course will be free to play and the equipment itself is quite inexpensive. Players use either a regular Frisbee or purchase a golf disc (which flies farther) for around $8. An 18-hole golf course with a dual set of tees, professional signs and baskets could be purchased and installed for around $30,000, less than the cost of a single tennis or basketball court.

The club recommends that the course be designed by John Houck, a designer with more than 30 years experience in disc sports and disc golf course design, and who lives in Wimberly, Texas. John has designed an impressive list of over 100 courses across the country, including area courses in Live Oak City Park, Kyle, Austin, New Braunfels, Gonzales, and Victoria, to name a few.

How Much Land Would Be Needed? Will It Conflict With Other Park Uses?

An 18-hole course would require approximately 18-24 acres, depending on the final design. One of the outstanding features of a disc golf course is its ability to successfully co-exist with other active and passive recreation uses such as dog walking and hiking. The course will be designed to avoid areas where groups regularly congregate such dog run areas, picnic areas, and playground areas. In addition, the portability of baskets and signs would allow the park department to inexpensively relocate holes if the needs of the Master Plan dictate that.

What Would The Maintenance Needs Be?

After installation, the maintenance needs for the course would be minimal. The baskets are made of rust-resistant, heavy-duty welded steel anchored below ground-level in concrete, and require no regular maintenance. In the unlikely event that one of these baskets is damaged beyond repair or stolen, it can be replaced for around $350. The tees, which will consist of concrete, will provide years of service. Pathways may need occasional maintenance, which Club volunteers would do under proper supervision, to prevent erosion caused by pedestrian traffic. The remainder of the course layout would require no regular maintenance.

What About Parking?

Parking for the course would take place inside the park near the first tee, rather than on nearby residential streets.

Is Disc Golf Environmentally Sensitive?

Disc golf is an uniquely environment-friendly sport. It provides the challenges of a structured sport while utilizing, but not altering, the natural landscape. Unlike traditional golf, a disc golf course does not require that trees be cut down, fairways mowed and watered, plants uprooted or non-native species planted. Rather, the course fits into the existing flora of the park. The Club will work with the Parks Department's representative to minimize erosion and damage to trees and shrubs. Trash cans will be placed along the course. Finally, the course will not be obtrusive. The tees will be level with the ground and will be visible only from a short distance. The baskets are dull metal and do not stand out, and most will be positioned in the trees. Small maps at each tee will illustrate the hole layout and will be designed in terms of color and shape so that they blend in with the landscape.

How Could A Disc Golf Course Make Voelker Park Safer?

A disc golf course at Voelker would increase people presence in the park at random times during weekdays and steadily during weekends. The influx of purposeful visitors would discourage the presence of individuals who are only in the park to cause mischief and perhaps engage in crime. Testimony from parks departments all over the country has shown that the installation of a disc golf course has led to significant decreases in vandalism, litter and illegal dumping since users have a stake in keeping the course and surrounding area clean and well-kept.

If there is something that you think should be added, post it here.

tbender
Oct 22 2007, 01:28 PM
I'd put in for a top end of 30 acres. That would cover 1.5 acres per hole and still leave 3 acres for parking, restroom facilities, a pavilion, etc, plus provides a built-in buffer to keep the course away from other heavy-use areas.

If they balk, you can always back it down. Of course, you won't really know how much gets used until the design begins.

Subject: Voelcker Park

Greetings,

I wanted to email you about features for Voelcker Park. San Antonio definitely needs a premier world class disc golf course. From the project vision I read on the website it appears San Antonio wants Voelcker Park to be a world class park. If that is the case they should follow the lead of other world class urban parks like Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA and New Quarter Park in Yorktown, PA. Those urban parks have world class disc golf courses and they really make the parks special. Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in the US. Some benefits of disc golf courses:

Love environmental impact
Course(s) can be placed in wooded areas and open areas with minimal alteration to the surrounding landscape
Free for players to play, very cheap to get started
Players help keep out vandalizing and loitering in wooded areas
Played by thousands of people in the San Antonio area
I personally that amount of land can easily support 2 world class disc golf courses. With the 2 top notches courses in Live Oak, 1 in Universal City, and another on the North East side of San Antonio, the San Antonio area will become a potential candidate for the World Disc Golf Championships. This event, typically played on all public courses on a metro area, brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars to the community.

It is not uncommon in the San Antonio metro area to see hundreds of people playing disc golf at any of the 4 San Antonio area course on any given day. There is still a need for more courses in San Antonio.

Thank you,
Scott Hougland

I agree with that. I think that with LODGC heading up the course maintenance, running minis and a league, plus the occasional tourney for (3) 18 hole courses [2 @ LO and 1 @ UC], the newly emerging Alamo Disc Golf Club could step up and be the lead representative on this course. My personal opinion is that by splitting up the courses to different clubs the courses benefit.

Joe

Before we propose to install/pay for a new course, we should see about the City/another partner to flip the bill. Maybe it should read: LODGC/LODGA will provide assistance to the development/installation of ANY new courses approved by the city.

The SA Parks Foundation is an organization that may provide funding. I have already begun communications with their liaison to the Board about a possible course for McAllister Park.

When the time comes to make a formal presentation to the foundation, I will let you know.

This is an exciting time for us all, and it may be just what we need to get better/fully organized.

They will also know how to help the parks dept make decisions like multiple tee pads, etc. Any of us could do it, but Mike and John can optimize everything, trust me. According to our Capital Project Manager this is the situation: The Disc Golf Course and Youth Practice Facility are both on the same schedule at Pearsall Park. In addition, our project is very closely tied to a Public Works Stormwater Project (Laddie Place) that is supplying fill material/soil for our projects. Due to the extremely wet summer we had, the projects have experienced some delays. In fact, we have yet to be able to return to the Laddie Place site for the remainder of the fill material needed at Pearsall Park because the soils have been so slow to dry out. We are in hopes that the recent spell of dry weather we have seen for the last 6 weeks or so will finally allow us to continue these projects in the upcoming weeks. The small amount of rain seen Monday morning should have a limited impact on this schedule. If all goes as planned, I am anticipating completion in December or January. You are welcome to call or stay in contact with Carlos Mendez who is the Project Manager on this project. Carlos can be reached at 207-2875 or [email protected] Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

How did it go last night? Did we represent well?

Oct 24 2007, 10:12 AM
It was great!! We got a lot of people from the community very interested and asking questions about DG as well as all existing in courses in LO, UC &amp; SA. They are very concerned about keeping this park very natural and environmentally safe, so they liked our kind of recreation instead of Baseball, Football, Soccer, etc...

We also informed of the crime rate in LO going down because of DGr's which really won them over... I can't go into lot of details right now, very busy at work. UpDog? where are you? Brian was our speaker last night and did great!!

Take it away uPDog......

Well they asked for 6 volunteers to speak to the crowd (about 800?) about what they wanted in the park, so I just decided to go for it. It was a little scary. Luckily I only had about 1 minute to talk.

I basically tried to repeat back to them what they wanted to hear--keeping the park natural, appealing to all ages and to all neighborhoods, and that DG was a perfect fit and that San Antonio needs more courses!

We distributed about 50 handouts to all the tables in the room I also spoke to Scott Stover, and one of the park architects, and gave her a flyer. She asked for more specifics on course implementation, but no promises. I also asked if they would be willing to enlist a course designer and she said they would.

More later.

Well, the final meeting wasn't nearly as large as last night's (maybe 10), but between the under-riding concerns of those attending, a few quality suggestions came about.
We can thank Scott H. for providing THE solution for a well received recreational activity in the park. He even brought visuals!! If it was still light out I bet we would have been playing obstacle golf to get the point across. Good Job Scott!!!

There should be more meetings in the upcoming months, hopefully showing the progression of the master plan. I want to thank everyone who attended the meetings and sent emails. I will keep you posted as I know more.

I chatted it up and made nice with one of the consultants doing the design :D. I gave her my contact info and said the local disc community will be here to help out in any way they need. I also gave her John Houck's name and website address. They are big on using local consultants to help with environmental analysis, useage analysis, etc. I figured since John has built many courses he likely knows all about parking and erosion and the like. I took some notes, they are below:

<u> Key Attributes of the Park </u>
<ul type="square"> Must be a city wide park
Must be flexible in design to allow for changes
Must preserve the environment
Must be sustainable
[/list]

Luckily disc golf fits into all those categories.

Other important dates ...
Mid December 07 - Public Meeting #2 (update on site analysis)
February 08 - Public Meeting #3 (update on park options, progress of master plan)
May/June 08 - Public Meeting #4 (final master plan presentation)

Did you see the Express News Article (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/recreation/stories/MYSA102807.01B.Voelcker.32b3b78.html) on the Voelcker Park public hearings that doesnt even mention disc golf?

I sent this letter to the San Antonio Excuse and Snooze:

Most respondents cited their wish for minimal environmental impact to Voelcker park.

What was not even mentioned in the E-N article was Disc Golf. Our local club sent representatives to at least 2 if not all 3 public hearings. I myself stood in front of the room at the NW Military meeting and spoke about Disc Golf. Why would this not even deserve mention in the article?

Disc golf is a natural fit for Voelker for several reasons:

1. Low environmental impact. We do not remove trees, we play around them. We do not clear wide fairways or change existing elevation changes, grades, or slopes. A course requires a fraction of the land required for "ball golf".

2. It's cheap to install and to play. For about the cost of a tennis court, an entire 18-hole course can be built, and a course can entertain up to 90 players at one time. The only required equipment is a frisbee, which costs about $8.

3. It's a game for a wide variety of age groups. Many schools have incorporated disc golf into their physical education programs. Disc golf tournaments have age-protected divisions up to 70+ years of age.

4. It reduces crime in parks because of activity at random times during the week, and fairly constantly on weekends. Bad actors don't like to be seen or surprised.

So I'd like to see the reporters should try a little harder to get all the facts. While the Parks and Recreation department has been responsive to the need for more disc golf courses in San Antonio, it would be nice if the local paper would help us to get the word out to the public.

or is just ignorant as to what disc golf is. I saw in the article it talked about ball fields ... from what I gathered, there will not be any ball fields, they want to leave the park as natural as possible without clearing huge swaths of land for yet another stupid soccer field ... this is america people, we don't like soccer, leave soccer for the Euros.

In fairness, its a pretty secluded spot for the groms and kooks to practice. From a skater's perspective, there's not much to it - a culvert and a drop...it's a wading pool. The young ones can get better there so they can show off in the deep end one day.

Why not? San Antonio needs a club to go before the parks, city, etc: and it needs to be a club from San Antonio. I think they would listen to us more. For example, when McClain opened up people were telling them (the paper/city) about lodga and they were asking what is the name of the SA Disc Golf Club or SA Womens Disc Golf League? They want it and we want it.

Bird is right that is why Brian back in the day formed:

LODGA is an alliance of players from San Antonio, Live Oak, Universal City, Schertz, New Braunfels, Pipe Creek and Gonzales. We have several "mini" tournaments throughout the week including our summer league. The LODGA is a PDGA affiliated club. Enjoy your stay, and please come back often!

1. There are no plans to remove any holes. No additional ball fields are planned. The course is fine as it is now.
I asked him to let me know if things should change.

2. The eagle scout is still working on the tee signs project. There are many levels of approvals required, but it is still planned, probably in January. His brother was also an eagle scout, and his projects were picnic tables and benches in the park.

Just playing devils advocate here ...

Should there be plans to move holes 1, 2, &amp; 18? These holes are very close to and cross over the path which is a bad idea. All it takes is one kid getting hit or an angry mom and the entire course could get pulled. I've seen it happen at other courses. If there is more land then why not be proactive and move these holes now. In my opinion these are pretty weak holes anyway.

Thoughts?
