I think you've got that backwards. It was Reagan and Bush that sold weapons to Iran to sponsor an illegal war in South America.

Of course some also claim that Reagan got the hostage takers to hold Americans prisoner longer so that they wouldn't be released prior to the election, thus helping Carter. I disagree though, the fact that the hostages got released during Reagan's inagural speech was just coincidence...
