The Live Oak Disc Golf Alliance and the Disc Golf Association announce the 2006 DGA Live Oak Summer Open, Live Oak City Park, Live Oak, Texas.

This PDGA "B" Tier event will be held May 6-7 and will feature the following: 36 permanent holes, DGA Players package for amateurs, lunch Saturday and Sunday, DGA Mach Lite Baskets to winners of the Men's Advanced, Intermediate and Rec divisions. Lady winners (and you're all winners), we'll have some great DGA stuff for you too! Minimum $500 added cash to Pro Divisions, probably more. Last year we added $1,000.

The raffle will be an incredible opportunity to get you a piece of history, as we will raffle off an authentic San Saba DiscCatcher, and we'll have two Steady Ed Memorial Discs with Steady Ed's ashes. More cool merch than you can shake a disc at!

162 players last year can't be wrong. Come and find out why Live Oak is the place to be in May!

I'm skipping 15A, B and C where the huge backups occurred last year, but adding the 2,200 feet 11A, B (across the lake), and C! And I think I skip 13, I'd have to check my hole assignament list at home. Oh and the infamous island hole #4 will be in play the same as last year. Tee once; if you miss the island go to the drop zone with a penalty stroke. Keep throwing from the drop zone with penalty until you are safely on.

Besides 150 is manageable, 160+ gets crazy!

What? Skipping 15 A-C? Say it ain't so. 15B is a separator hole. IMO, you're penalizing accuracy off the tee by skipping it. And I admit 15C needs a tree or two taken out beyond the mando, but still it's a hole that messes with players' minds. (I like holes that instill fear of missing a spot 20' off the tee---and watching how many people actually struggle with that.)

We played #13 last year.


Nonetheless Brian, looking forward to another quality LOSO (this time, in the cool, May days). :)

But no worries, wait till you see 11C. It's 800 feet of pure technical joy! Blows 15 B away in my opinion.

I like 15a,b,c, I shot 2 under on those holes at the Texas 10 finals.

On the other hand, you can cut hole 24(?) That was the hole I shot a 9 on for my first hole in the second round :o:( :p :D

I was sad that we had to skip 11A-C at the Ice Bowl. Minella and Turbo had me intrigued by their descriptions.

We're gonna disagree on the 15's... :)
I think the problem with 15B is that you've got too many open-air golfers who couldn't throw tight shots if they were spotted bumper lanes. (Not like I did well on this hole, two 5's going for 3's, but golfers complicate it more than they should.)

15C should be a double mando (right and top). Pretty clear definition IMO at the mando line. Problem is the silliness inbetween the mando and the basket (no real route).

Not that we are voting or anything, but 15 A and B are nice. Couldn't you just put an am box closer to the turn on 15B? It would speed things up. Or, maybe do this: put a drop zone at the turn and allow anyone who wants the option of throwing three from there after their first shot. That would speed things up also.

I played 11a,b,and c this weekend...very good holes(c is tough :eek:) ...#13 is a silly hole(good choice to remove)...and if you skipped the 15's where would you go after 14?...BTW the courses looked really good(looks like a lot of work has been done since I was last there)

To keep the courses to 18 holes each I have to make choices. You really can't do 15 A and B without C, the walk would be long to the next hole. To keep a nice circular route, it would be difficult to pick three other holes on the city hall course to give up too.

Bryan, 24 is the 400 foot downhill hole, you may mean 23 or 25, both in the 600 foot range and full of disc eatin schule.

Mitch, you play #15 then play #28 and turn back toward #1 for the Lake course.

The other course starts on #16 and ends on #27.

It's a great natural break point. Did that happen naturally or did Houck actually want that?

James, has a good idea for 15B. :) (Not like we have a voice...)

Yep, that's it, I tried to throw over the trees and didn't make it. It took me 3 more throws to get an upshot, which I left short, then I missed my putt like 4 times for a 9 :p

Lake Course... two options, because we aren't sure if 10A and 10B will be ready for LOSO...

Option 1 preferred:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10A,10B,11,11A,11B,11C,12,13
(no mando on 13)
Option 2:
1,2,3,4,5,5A,6,7,8,9,10,11,11A,11B,11C,12,13M,14
(Mando on 13, 5A plays from top of hill by 1's tee pad down close to 6's tee box.)

James, in my humble opinion, 2, 3 and 4 (played as an island) are pretty good holes. I can move the box on 5 to make it more difficult. 6 is tough across the water, and 7 is technical. 8 is kind of silly, but I can move it back too if need be. But you are going to want these birdies before you hit 11a-c.

I'm not sure what hole you are talking about going back to 1... the one that plays from the side of the football field to the practice basket? Good hole, but I can't plan in advance for it, because if there is anything happening on the field, the hole can't be played.

Whatever you want and decide is fine with me. The intent behind my suggestion is to eliminate the one negative I have about the Live Oak courses: the first nine holes (1, 6, and 7 excluded) are "must birdie golf." IMO, must birdie golf is not necessary in this day and age, and certainly not when there are so many challenging holes left unplayed.

We played it last night with the mando to the left forcing a righty anhyzer. Some trees have been cut out to make a left fairway, albeit a tight one. It was a pretty good hole. RT, Carlos, Phil and I (all rated 950 or higher) three'd it, though two of us were close enough... 40-50' that the two was makeable.

I went out to Live Oak last night and came up with a couple of different formats for the two 18 hole courses.

Lake Course
1,2,3,4,5,5A,6,7,8,9,10,11,11A,11B,11C,12,13M,14

-or-

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10A,10B,11,11A,11B,11C,12,13M (if 10A and 10B are ready AND the course isn't under water.)

Int and rec will play short tees on 6,11A,11B and 11C both rounds.

City Hall Course
15,15A,15B,15C*,16,17,18,20-21A**,23,A,B,C,D,24,25,26,27,28

Ints and Recs to play short tees on 15,15A,15B,17,20-21A**,23,24, and 25 both rounds

4th round, pro's and advanced will play short tees on 15B,23,20-21A**, and 25 to save a little time and get you home earlier.

* - No mando enforced.
** - Play from 20 tee's box to about 100 feet past 21's basket (17B's old location)... about 700-800 feet. We played it at our food drive event, and it was well received, and keeps the course flow intact.

Distance Competition News:

At our pre-tourney meeting, we decided to retire the long distance competition for the 2006 LOSO. City hall received a few vociferous complaints regarding large unseemly characters jumping their back yard fences to retrieve errant discs. Although there are other areas we could hold the event, there is no place within close proximity to the club house, and players and spectators would have to drive a ways to watch/participate.

So, we have decided to run a special Ace Run event in it's place. All players who register for the ace pot will have the opportunity after the 4th round to throw the same hole that was used in the Texas 10 final for $30,000 ace (23C). If there are no aces for the prior 4 rounds, this will be used as the CTP for the ace pot as well. Each ace from this hole will split $250, and yes they can be skip aces or deflections off the tree unlike the Texas 10 rules. If there are no aces hit, the closest 5 players, plus ties will rethrow and the winner will receive $100 for the CTP. No additional fees are required to participate in this event.

And you may think I'm kidding, but this will fill, and I will cap at 150 to give some breathing room on the course. Vicky-T would have hit 150 if the weather was nicer and they had more room, so don't think wow, 150, i'll just sign up the day of. ok, this is a possibility for me.

But I need someone to help with Gas.

Looking for a ride or someone to ride down there with me. (my truck gets about 17 MPG, 600 miles round trip would cost me about $90 right now)

Whenever you want to leave, I will work it out. (any time on Friday or Saturday morning really early)


ALSO, looking for floor space Saturday (possibly Friday Night)

However, I will split a room with someone comming down with me.

This will be one of the largest B-Tier tournaments in Texas, I want to be a part of it. (and it is one of the only open weekends I have that month)

Looks like there will be a baseball tournament competing with LOSO this year, so I have to make a course adjustment. Hole 5A, a temp hole that plays from the pavillion by hole 1 along the baseball field will be replaced by a connector hole between hole 11A and 11B. I'll renumber them to be 11A, 11B, 11C, and 11D. 11B will tee to the left of 11A's basket to a basket close to existing 11B's tee box (the one that plays across the lake.) There is actually a nice fairway defined already, just need to get it mowed. Waiting on approval from Parks and Rec for that. The new hole plays about 360 feet.

57 players and counting, will post updated list later. If entries start coming in heavy, I may start capping divisions to aid in course flow, so get in now if you're coming. I'd rather have 130-140 happy players than 150 unhappy ones. ;)

58, got one more tonight. I am changing new 11B to 260 feet, and changing the 20-21 hole to a 19-21 hole (Ints and Recs will play normal hole 21.) Should play around 700 feet. Chris "Swedish" Himing and I played 35 of the 36 LOSO holes tonight. He shot even and I shot +1. I think a -5 to -7 is possible for the long layout.

I blew a water pump in Waxahache on my way too COTO one year. (jeees, that was over 10 years ago)

I also dropped my alternator on a trip to OKC just after we passed Ardmore. We actually stuck a tennis ball between the alternator and the engine block. That got us there, however it fell out somewhere and the truck died as we pulled into the parking lot in Norman. (took it at lunch to a repair shop, they had it done and ready for me after the 2nd round)

Anyways, back on topic :D

It took me a few days to even find someone to share a ride with. I am comming with a Rec player from Grapevine.

Call me a radical but I suggest that names should be drawn for the baskets in the divisions. I think that would be a great incentive for lower skilled players to join the tournement. Also, that way everyone in the divisions has a chance to come away a big winner and you eliminate the "bagger incentive". Plus, You allow unrated players in rec and int. Free baskets to the winner of rec? That is just chumming for sharks.

I have DGA Mach Lites for Adv and Int Men, a DiscCatcher Sport and another Innova lite brand for Adv Women and Rec Men. I've advertised that the winners will get the baskets, and this counts as part or all of their payout depending on the size of the field. Can't change now. But it's a good idea for next year Seeker.

We are raffling off a San Saba DiscCatcher pro basket too($400 new) for $5 a chance, 2nd place gets a DGA mini pole hole.

Tournament Headquarters will be at the same place it was last year for both LOSO and the Texas 10 final... by the pool house at 7901 Shin Oak. We will not use the pool house this year, so you must check in at the building behind the pool house... you will see the HQ no problem.

Flex Dubs on Friday run by RT Evans, $20 per team, cash to pros, merch to ams. Ams and pros play long boxes during dubs. Turn in cards saturday morning before the start of round 1. Dubs flex start time will be 3-6, meet at the parking lot by hole 28 in the middle of the park.

Executive decision time. We're filling very fast now, so I will cut off all registration for the tournament on Wednesday, May 3 @ midnight. I should have said no ints and recs will have to play in fivesomes. Advanced and up is cool ese. Personally, I know I don't like them that much though, the pace is too slow for me, but I'm a fast player and hate to stand around much.

I remember back in the day playing in tournaments with 6, 7 and even 8 players on a card at a tournament. (8 players was at a one day event in Norman OK over 15 years ago)

I did not like the PDGA cap at 5 when they passed that. I though 6 would be better.

BTW, I HATE threesums. What if someone does not show up??

I am a fast player, but like a slow pace at a tournament.

I vote for 4 people max to a card, 5 people on a card just takes too long and I hate the slow pace of playing with 4 other people.

My vote is for no street rumors. Remember as in my events "if the TD does not say it, don't believe it". You never know that street could lead to the bush. :D

Just signup now and there will be no issues.

I started this thread in January, been handing out flyers for months, had Gordon email his entire e-mail list, talked it up at every event I went to, and didn't require anyone to pay in advance to register, though a big thanks to those who did!

titledisc closes Sunday night. If you sign up and your division was capped, I'll send you a refund. You should e-mail or pm me before you sign up so I can hold the slot, or let you know if your division is full. There's only so much room on the course, cards are made, and maps have been printed, so no adding extra holes to accomodate late comers.
