I don't know how much info is confidential or not but what I can say is that the 5 members of the city council are out to get Joe P. Joe is a good guy as we all know. Things will work out if he gets the needed support.
I suggest someone local make sure the local media are in attendance for tonights meeting along with plenty of local support. With the media there the council may act a little more like people.
From what I know the "corrupt 5 council" was only voted in because of the "older" residents getting tax breaks. The majority of normal aged people in the city are against this council. Live Oak needs a new council. They also need a disc golfer on the council. Maybe I should move to Live Oak! I also know the Parks Commission has a vacancy right now!

The bigger key is to have LODGA members who are Live Oak citizens present, not just to represent the DG community but the influx of younger (touted in their November newsletter...by Mr. Painter) residents. That presence will show all present (mayor/council/media) that there is a move to a more active and involved population.
From afar, this looks like a sleepy older community isn't wanting to grow or be active. The same thing is happening here in the town my dad works for (Friendswood).

Basicly there is a new city council and they have it out for Joe Painter. They are saying he is a liar and misuses fund's for the park ect, urban devolpment. The city manager had a budget that he can spend on for the year. The city council want's to be in control of his budget, and possibly get rid of the position. Ever since the city has had more money in it's entire budget from the forum and new business's thing's have changed for the worst!
So the city council calls an emergency meeting tonight, and is trying to get rid of him, plain and simple.

This is the response I got:

You are all on the right track. However, there are two council members that are true to Mr. Painter. Mr. Richard Lamothe and Mr. Hap Welch. ALL emails must remain positive. It will only hurt matters if you slam Council or the Mayor. We CANNOT stoop to their level of ignorance.
Chris was also correct in that our local golfers need to get involved. If there are enough consistant voices heard then change can be made.
Last week you all showed your generosity on short notice by giving to the needy, you can do it again in the next 4 hours. I have heard from Mr. Painter already and he is truely touched. Keep up the good work!
I will be at the meeting tonight as well. I have heard KSAT 12, the newspaper and maybe WOAI's troubleshooters will be present.
Remember-KEEP THOSE EMAILS COMING IN AND KEEP THEM POSITIVE.

Here's a template, modify to your liking, but Joe is right, be positive...
Mr. Mayor,
I want to voice my support for City Manager Joe Painter. I have known Joe for several years now, and I don't think you can find a harder working, honest, dedicated, civil servant anywhere. His dedication to the city of Live Oak is unparalleled in my opinion. With the number of hours he dedicates to this job he loves, he deserves a raise.
I can tell you that in my dealings with employees and citizens of Live Oak, I have never heard an ill word, and typically hear praise.
I hope you will consider this as you review Mr. Painter. This would be a tremendous loss for Live Oak should he leave.
Thanks for your consideration,
Signed....

Just saw the live TV cross on the news. No decision was announced but they will meet again on January 6th. The news broadcast said it was "heated discussions" inside the chambers.
Joe Painter was interviewed briefly and said he did not expect to keep his job.
One past major was interviewed and slammed Joe while another said all the people at the council tonight were there to support him for all he has done.
I saw Jim Yount there in the crowd.
Hopefully someone that was there will fill us in later.
Maybe the delay to January 6th was a good thing, however it seems as long as the current council is in power Joe's job is not going to be much fun.
We will keep doing what we can Joe.
Chris
I certainly hate to see this. I wish I was there to report on it, and editorialize. ;)
Having served as the council-appointed City Secretary here for two years, under a CM who remained under constant fire, my experience tells me that once a council gets it in their minds that a CM needs to go, for what ever reason, it can become a dogpile, and issues are less relevant than publicly espoused, as long as the result is the one desired by the council. All sorts of issues can and do come into play, just to throw more wood on the pile. It can often be much easier for the CM to move on when he's no longer wanted, than to endure a head hunting council.
Joe's a good man, and other CM's that I know have also said good things about him. He has been a tireless promoter of Live Oak, way beyond our sport's community.
I'd love to see him keep his job, but not at the expense of his reputation. I hope he weathers this storm and if he does move on, I hope it's in Texas. At least we'd know we had a friend wherever he ended up. :)
Good luck to all.
I'll draft my email today.

Council will reconvene with the original cr*p! So for those that could not make last night, you will have another chance to support the BOSS. We are still encouraging golfers to continue their support of Mr. Painter either through phone calls (653-9140 ext. 212) or by email to

It was amazing last night though, I bet 90% of the people there were in support of Joe, and in my selfished opinion, that's the way it should be!

It may be a good thing to write up a petition for the citizen of Live Oak to kept Joe Painter as City Manager and then go block walking to get them to sign it :Dand also to throw a rally at the park to show support for him :Djust a thought :D

The petition should be something like: We the citizen of Live Oak hereby demand that all adverse action against the City Manager ( Mr. Joseph Painter) be dropped and that the City council met with him to discuss any and all issue that were brought fore in the letter date ??-??-2005 :DBrian may be able to come up with some better language or maybe Lopar wife :D let get some feed back on this because time is against us :o:D

Let me see if I can translate that article:
A City Manager who does his job on a daily basis versus a newly elected council with little or no experience in running a city. City Manager who wants to just do his job without all the political a** kissing that the clown-cil wants from him.
Recipe for a new city manager. I feel bad for Joe, but that is the reality. I wish him the best, and I hope he stays, but that is not the way to bet.
We as disc golfers had better be ready to defend our course, because the assault on it is surely coming. We have to be on our best behavior when we see other park users. (Not that I have seen otherwise!) We should also always try to reach out to disc golfers who are not involved with our club. We need to try to educate them and control their behavior too, because they reflect on us.
Events like the Food Drive Frenzy will also help our cause. We may need to coordinate media coverage so that we get credit for these events.
In short, we need to do whatever we can to raise awareness in Live Oak that we are civic minded people that they should want to have in their park. Maybe we can offer to meet with concerned citizens to educate them on the sport, and let them see that we are real people with homes and jobs, who pay taxes and help the community. It's harder to get mad at people you know.

All right you Live Oak guys, somewhere there has to be a public record of what Joe's job is and what he has accomplished as City Manger. Can any of you access that info for the rest of us. My experience is that if we can write citing specific accomlishments and objectives met you can accomplish a lot.
Also, what is the base of the no budget and no accountibility charges. Can we get records showing his reporting structure, i.e. who was his boss and did he answer to.
Also, does Joe want us to go to bat and can he provide info on these issues?
Finally, one of the first posts alluded to what the issues might be. Control of funds etc. Can we get more info on this?
I hate politicians... They're all pretty scummy.
