I've been toying with this idea for another dimension of disc golf. You see, expanding the Kewaunee course from 11 to 18 holes has been slow, so my mind has begun to wander. Get this...
How about installing "target zones" throughout the course? These could be something as simple as a hula-hoop, or other bright, open structure that you would have to throw through for extra points. Essentially they would be in the location of a perfect or narrowly achievable throw. They could even be in a high risk, high reward area like an alternate narrow tunnel to the basket through thick bushes. There could be multiple per hole, near the tee, near the basket, or right in the middle of the fairway. One could be set up on the right side as well as left side for both types of arms. Imagine standing on top of a tightly wooded hill, you see the basket 300' straight ahead through a 25' wide fairway, but there is also a 5-10' wide gap on either side where the perfect backhand or sidearm would be greatly rewarded and a slight error would be punished severely. Whether it is a blaze orange 5' diameter ring or a smaller hula-hoop, you'd know where the bonus targets were. Either way, they wouldn't be set up to harm your overall strokes if you did hit them, they'd be placed at ideal flight locations. Would their presence possibly harm a decent throw that may hit the ring?
What I don't have worked out is how you would score it, or if it would be worth the risk in all cases if you were also playing against one another for actual strokes. Maybe they are a bonus, where if you nail it, you make a buddy shotgun a beer, or carry the beer cooler until he hits a target. Or the one who has hit the least bonus targets at the end of the night has to buy dinner for all. What do you guys think? How many would be interested in an alternative spin on the game such as this? What would be a good way of scoring the targets, playing for points, or gaining a "free throw" for hitting one and effectively taking off one stroke?
