whats the best private course you've played? i've only played one and it was awesome(mitch mac's). one thing that really appeals to me about private courses is that you could use portable baskets and easily have several different layouts and pin placements.

In no particular order Kandahar, Timberlee, Willow Brook and Flip City all were or are great private courses. Kandahar and Timberlee were on ski hill property. Willow Brook is the best Fly 18 yet to be built. Flip City is a permanent 24 on wonderfully hilly terrain. Flip City is the only one you could go play tomorrow.

I know the 'randomly punitive' design philosophy from Spencer bothers you. If that is indeed true, it bothers me, too.

But I've never seen any other disc golf with the whole package: elevation changes, open holes, tight wooded holes, water hazards, short holes, dauntingly long holes, roller holes, par threes, par fours, par fives, incredible vistas/views, free camping on site, etc. Except for being remotely located, Paw Paw has got it all!

I thought Kandahar was a public course. It seemed public to me when we played it. Flip City is practically a public course. If you were to just drive up to Flip City and play it without talking to the owners, they wouldn't kick you out. That's fairly public.

It's a beautiful property without a doubt and it has some good holes. There is a lot of untapped potential that is masked by the sheer awesomeness of the terrain. With things like crossing fairways, several wide open "nothing" holes and the pinball design philosophy, it's more frustrating than fun for me to go there.

Sandy Point in WI is really nice. Very clean, garbage can, bench and broom on every tee pad. Not a single cig. butt on the course. Cuts nicely through the woods, multiple pin placements. Owner owns a bunch of cabins there that you can rent.

Does it matter what another person thinks about a course that you personally enjoy? If you like it, that is all that matters. Chuck is one guy, what is the big deal. There are some courses I would never go back to, but others think they are the greatest courses in the world, Lake Lowndes S.P. in Columbus MS for example.

The only private course I have played is Bud Hill in Memphis TN. A nice course, some super challenging holes but mostly alot of simple hyzer shots for easy 2's.

The Paw Paw courses don't have to have my or anyone else's seal of approval, especially since they are on private property. I don't like sauerkraut either but that doesn't mean it isn't great for lots of people. It is what it is and many enjoy the fabulous terrain, views and wonderful hospitality. I enjoyed all of those aspects on my visit including the unique challenges of many holes. But if the courses are strictly evaluated separate from all of the other positive aspects of Paw Paw, there are some issues as noted. Crossing fairways violate course design 101 just for starters. That's just a fact, not a judgment.

Grass roots disc golf!!! I love private courses!!! The feel, the folks, the golf........the whole ball of wax. In no particular order and for a variety of reasons these are my favorites: "Spotsy Region" of Virginia is a veritable rabbit warren of great private courses - Mike Trapasso's The Grange with 54 holes on site, John Biscoe's Hawk Hollow down the road a few minutes; John Whinery's Fossil Hill, Greene County Tennessee, The Country Course NC, Higher Ground NC........... I could go on..... Probably almost as many private course in NC as public. Shoot, I liked private courses so well, I bought the company.:D

I have gotten to the point where I don't enjoy the public courses as much as I used to. So I built one myself on our little farm in Virginia. I also enjoy the Grange in Spotsylvania as well as Rockahock in New Kent.

I think private courses are the wave of the future. You can go in there and really build a course without having to go through inordinate amounts of Gov't red tape hemmin' and hawwin'.

It's odd that Texas hasn't chimed in on this thread. I've only been golfing in Texas on one trip and was lucky enough to have played at Houck's Wimberley courses . . . . tremendous.

I think if you review LaGrassa's list of pluses at Paw Paw and then review Chuck's list of minuses you'll point to Wimberley. Sadly, I've never played San Saba, but when my $50 million lotto ticket comes through I'll take a good look at buying it . . .. I know God -- I've got to buy a ticket.

Paw Paw is great for big arms, too long for noodle arms like me. So many of the holes are D contest holes, rip your arm out of the socket, 500 foot uphill shots. That's great when you are young and really want to grip it and rip it.

At my age I'll settle for noodle arm courses instead of monster courses. Ouch. Paw Paw hurts just thinking of it I need to go get the BenGay. And this way I don't have to walk so far. I think Paw Paw is like 2 miles each round.

The two best private courses that I would consider my favorite would be Ozark Mountain and Larry Ast's private course in his yard. Ozark Mountain is without a doubt my favorite course in the world!! All with water, beautiful veiws and vistas, and HUGE elevation changes that will make you dizzy just looking at them. Including one hole that rises 50 feet on a 200 foot shot. As well as one that drops 100 feet on a 700 foot hole!! :cool:Not to mention it is on 275 acres of Ozark backcountry. Larry Ast's course however is without a doubt the nicest course in anyone's yard on earth. You can't imagine anything being better on 5 acres. With the coolest eleveted rock green/ teeoff and treehouse tee-deck you could ever imagine. Not to mention how wonderfully landscaped and maintained the entire property is. So much work has gone into his yard that one could not even venture to guess how many man-hours it actually took he and his wife. I just feel blessed to have been able to play either one of these courses I just described. For pics of Ozark Mountain go to www.gdstour.com (http://www.gdstour.com) and go to the courses link.

In Central Texas alone we have (in my order of preference) 4 amazing Private Ranches (most with multiple courses on the property):
<ul type="square"> Circle R --- San Saba: 3 of the most difficult but beautiful courses you'll ever play. It's hard to beleive all three courses are on the same piece of proptery, yet are completely different than each other Moody's Red Rock --- huge pine trees, rolling meadows, and ponds to throw at/over. Plus, Dave will let you bring your dog out to run and play with his dog, Daisy. Twin Parks Country Club --- a meadow course and a hill course similar to Wimberley, but with concrete tee boxes, solar lights for night play, the best Disc Golf club house anywhere, and a herd of English elk running through the fairways. Circle R --- Wimberley: Two more amazing and contrasting courses designed by the master, John Houck. The Meadow will try your technical skills, while the Hill will try your strength and stamina. See if you can find someone connected with Gran Canyon in Brooksville, FL. The owner is not a disc golfer but charges $5 per day. They have separate pro & am tournaments in in the winter, with 27 holes and over 100 players each and 3 days of fees, that's $3,000 or more to the owner. As I understand they hold a half-dozen smaller tournaments a year. No idea how much casual traffic they get; no pro shop or other services; and the property is multi-use (mountain-biking, I think). This must be profitable if you aren't considering land costs.

This gets my vote as my favorite private course and favorite course overall (of about 85 played in about 20 states). As a private course owner myself---a work in progress at this point---I'd be happy to eventually just cover our costs.

Another great course, high on my list of favorites, is a hidden gem of Still Waters Farm in Govan, SC. Its remoteness limits its play outside of tournaments. Private courses are great because they can be designed without some of the limitations of public courses----move a tree, plant a tree, dig a ditch, pile dirt, use moveable baskets, change any hole that doesn't work out as planned, go anywhere without regard to other park users.....no waiting on large groups, lots of peace and quiet, most often scenic, other activities, diffrent standards of conduct, etc.

Offer the customer world class courses, full amenities, and a reasonable daily fee ($5 per day) and there's no way they can't be profitable.

Farm Life Disc Golf in Williamston, NC is one of the toughest courses I've played. Not a long course but plenty of tight woods to test your game. Some water, and the skeeters could also be considered a hazard. My favorite in NC is The Country Course. 25 holes that mix up woods and open field shots with elevation and good times makes for a great experience. Plus, Brian McRee to show you around makes it worth the while. Plus next door there is the Groove, which is pretty tight also.

I just played the Paw Paw tournament today. And I have to agree full heartedly with Chuck on this one.

The crossing fairways, while fine for casual play and small tournaments where groups can be spread out, it is a strange thing to actually experience it.

Overall I liked the design, but there are probably about 6-8 holes that could use some chainsaw TLC. From what I saw on the tee signs for the intent of the hole design, there is tremendous potential for a top notch, world class course. But when you have a 4ft fairway for over 350ft, or when a basket or fairway is blocked by trees spaced out by only 3ft, that is not a disc golf hole.

Unlike mentioned up thread, I did not see any par 5's. There were a lot of par 4 holes, and some very long three's.

It is definately.......remote.

I did forget about 3 other private courses I have played.

CR2 in San Saba....MECCA!

Too bad it is gone, I loved all three of these course. #9 on Strawbale fields was incredible. You teed off an elevated pennisula over a 50ft deep OB ravine that is 300ft across. On the other side is the fairway, it is only 80ft wide surrounded by OB on the right, and the OB ravine on the left. The remainder of the fairway stays the same width with mesquite trees in the middle, and runs for an addtional 680ft.

Granted, 300ft is an extreme distance for a mandatory shot, but is on a world class course and a professional tee box.

As for PawPaw and the crossing fairways.............were you in a hurry to get somewhere?????? where ya goin???? whats the rush, enjoy the day, your miles from anything :)

As the guy who keeps the books for two of the most frequented pay-for-play courses in Maine, I can assure you that no individual course has ever made $500,000 in any given year, and certainly not in the first year of operation. Whoever gave you that info is waaayyy off.

When done right, and wisely, operating a private, pay-to-play disc golf course can make the owner and employees a fair living, but no one's getting rich off of it. A good year is a break-even year, if you're properly investing money back into the course/facilities for upkeep and improvements. If you're not doing that, you're not going to keep people coming back.

John,

You're definitely as nice as Johnny ;) and I thoroughly enjoyed our round at Hawk Hollow! However, these ratings are done on the curve, and are pretty subjective, so they are fluid. I recently made some adjusments to the top courses. Although Lucky 8 edged you out a lot of that has to do with being on a spectacular piece of property and the 20+ years that Johhny has had to develop the course.

Be encouraged, though, your still at #14 overall of 165+ that I've played. Especially for a private course that doesn't have Park Dept resources that's exceptional!

HeyHowdy Lowe. Quite interesting to see Ramcat and Farm Life right together in your ratings. I played Farm Life for the first time a month ago and had the good fortune of playing a couple or three rounds with Kent Roberson, FL course owner, who has not played Ramcat. When the subject of comparing the two courses inevitably came up I told him Ramcat was really very similar in a lot of ways even with the dramatic topographical differences. Just add probably an average two feet of width per FL fairway, shake the contours of FL into a little plication, and drain off the swamp and the mental approach to playing the two courses is very similar. Cut your drives to 80% effort and be satisfied with staying in the fairway rather than feeling you have to make a run at every basket.

Come see us when you get a chance. New holes, and IMHO better (read more challenging), #'s 1, 2, 17, and 18 since you did those ratings. Of course benches on over half the holes now, to rest your bones, might actually lower the Ramcat ratings. :D

Oh, and please don't incite John into making HH even longer and more difficult. I've only had the pleasure of playing Hawk Hollow once and even though I guess it tape measures as a long course, it is so well thought out that it just doesn't feel like a long course. Loved it.

In Maui, there is a course named Poli Poli. It sits on the lee ward side of the 10000 foot Haleakala volcano at at least 6000 ft. Beautiful views, technical and challenging course, and cool locals. What could be better than playing disc golf on top of a tropical rainforest covered volcano in Maui?

Hey Lowe,

There's a new private course here in Houston, Oak Meadows. The course is beautiful (remember we're talkin' Houston, although that is an understatement. There are beautiful tunnels, a huge island with a lake on one side and a huge back drop of semitropical trees and
Live Oaks). You need to get it rated, In terms of "metro" courses it is probabaly one of the best; a real mix of big crush holes, and small technical holes with everything in between, including water hazards and some of the roughest shule anywhere (rough = briars etc.) To top it off, the developer and designer have put in concrete pads, big wide ones, and the course has a winding concrete path that goes through the holes but doesn't interfere. To top it off, the course get's groomed like a ball golf course.

Sounds like a city park right? Nope, private development as part of an outdoor theme neighborhood. Best yet, the price... free!

Check out the map at hfds.org/MB/Courses/Oak Meadows

Lyle,

Thanks for the info. I'll be in Houston on business at the end of Dec. I'd love to play the course then if I can get away one day. The course sounds great!

a huge island with a lake on one side

i'm sure it's just a wording error but that line gives me a headache.
