The Location
Through a joint effort between Discraft (http://www.discraft.com) and Sun King Discs (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com), the Plantation Inn & Golf Resort (http://www.plantationinn.com) in Crystal River, FL has added a permanent 18-hole disc golf course to it's long list of guest amenities which also includes kayaking, canoeing, boat rentals and a full service dive shop, not to mention 2 amazing golf courses.

Located north of Tampa/Clearwater on Florida's scenic Nature Coast, the uniqueness of the Plantation Inn disc golf course is the use of both existing "ball golf" holes and unused adjacent property which combine to make a world class championship-level facility. The course layout has been finalized and is now in the ground ready for play. The Plantation Inn & Golf Resort will be the annual home of The Players Cup (http://www.theplayerscup.org), a disc golf event which will debut November 18th, 19th & 20th 2005.

The Format
The Players Cup will feature 160 of the top professional disc golf players from around the world in a one division format playing 3 rounds of 18 holes on the par 63 Lagoons Course.

The Course
The Lagoons Disc Golf Course is a hybrid creation and uses part "ball" golf course combined with additional adjacent property to form a beautiful, yet challenging backdrop for the prestigious event known as The Players Cup. The Lagoons Course, by name, will obviously offer plenty of water obstacles in addition to the sand traps and putting greens of the "ball" golf course being OB as well. On top of that, no artificial OB's or obstacles were needed as the cement cart paths usually carve out narrow fairways and strategic, natural "landing zones" add to the formidable course design. All in all, the Lagoons measures 9180 feet and has a par score of 63. More detailed "hole by hole" information, along with pictures, will be posted at www.theplayerscup.org (http://www.theplayerscup.org) shortly.

The CA$H
The Players Cup will live upto the hype by guaranteeing $10,000 for the first place winner. In addition, the total purse should be in the neighborhood of $50,000, which should make it the 3rd largest purse of the year - and that's just the inaugural event!

The Event
The Players Cup, as an event, was designed to seperate itself from traditional disc golf tournaments. In addition to the large purse, The Players Cup was put forth for an overall "player experience", highlighted by the amazing facility and it's amenities. To help round out the tournament year in style, The Players Cup will offer participants the chance at many comforts and recreational activities without ever having to leave the hotel grounds; in fact the Lagoons course is a mere 3-minute walk from the hotel door to the first tee! In addition, there will be an opening ceremony and players dinner in which all particpants will be welcomed and given full explanation of the weekend activities and facilities and there will be a social hour every evening outside by the tiki bar and pool and musical entertainment will be provided on Saturday.

Qualifying For 2005
The qualification process for The Players Cup '05 is really quite simple. It's format was designed to do two specific tasks; qualify both the top-ranked touring professional players along with the top-ranked regional and international players who might not travel as far or as often as the touring players. In effect, this format will create a large pool of highly skilled players from around the globe with different backgrounds and personalities, different levels of experience and different throwing styles. Lastly, and most importantly, the format only qualifies real players, who based on their previous performance, qualified for the event - you cannot "buy" a spot or receive a sponsors exemption. Afterall, it's called The Players Cup for a reason.

The following is the basic qualifying format used for The Players Cup: Any male or female player who won a PDGA sanctioned, B-Tier, A-Tier, National Tour or Major event in any of the Professional divisions (Open, Master, Grand Master, Sr. Grand Master or Legend) in the previous calendar year is considered eligible to play. In addition, the winner must have competed against at least two other players in their respective division to be considered eligible. Once a player is qualified, their eligibility status remains active until the event registration has closed. In the event that a player wins multiple tournaments, the next player or players (if there was a tie), by score, who have not previously qualified, will then become eligible. This means that a player does not necessarily have to win an event to qualify. A player can gain eligibility by having the best score among the remaining "non-qualified" players at an event. Sanctioned tournaments that use a "doubles" format were included as qualifying events, but Ratings Based tournaments were not. Simplified, this means that at any sanctioned B-Tier or higher event there is one qualifying spot in each Pro division that has 3 or more players. If the player with the best final score has already qualified earlier in the year, the qualifying spot will then trickle down to the next "previously non-qualified" player with the best score. Click HERE (http://theplayerscup.org/players.htm) to view The Qualified Players list for 2005.

Additional Qualifying For 2005
Of the 160 open spots for The Players Cup, 10 will be reserved for special qualifying events later this year. These late qualifying events will be the only chance for any player not on the current Qualified List to get into The Players Cup '05. The events are broken into 2 phases. The first phase is The Players Cup Summer Series, which will offer 3 one-day, two-round events on temporary courses laid out on "ball" golf courses in Florida (Clearwater, Gainesville & Orlando), including one round of night golf on a lighted golf course! The top 3 non-qualified pro players and top 2 advanced amateur players, based on series points, will then qualify. In addition, 5 more spots will be awarded at the "Last Chance" events which are scheduled for the early part of the event weekend in November.

Qualifying For 2006
For the innaugural tournament, the idea was to invite as many players as possible to expose them to The Players Cup '05 experience. For The Players Cup '06, the qualifying format will change slightly by adding the fact that a player must be "in the cash" in addition to all of the previous criteria stated above. In some instances for The Players Cup '05, especially late in the year, the trickle down effect qualified players that didn't "cash" at the tournament, but still ended up as a qualified player. While that standard was acceptable as part of the innaugural tournament, it has been determined that to grow the event integrity, it is necessary to make the qualifying a bit more strict and in turn a bit more exclusive.

Registering For The Players Cup
A registration date will be announced shortly. All qualified players will be notified about 30 days before registration starts, thus giving all players a fair shot at registering for this exciting inaugural event. Qualified players will have the option of registering and paying the $195 entry fee either online or by mailing the form in. Early registrants will be rewarded with the desirable late morning/early afternoon tee times for the opening Friday round.

had a fun round out at plantation inn yesterday. greg hosfeld set the new course record at 62 (-1), but left a few out there (try not to use the word orc around him for a while). -6 should be a hot round for the big boys with moderate winds. in dead calm (very rare out there), maybe a -10.

all the cement pads are poured. scorecards and legends are available in the proshop. rates are $5 to walk and $10 to ride.

please call mike or myself for additional info before heading up to play.

well, THANK YOU to everyone involved in getting this one launched. Looks awesome!

Mikey/Al,
Thanks for the compliments! We definitely think that we will have "raised the bar" when this event is over. This event is all about the experience and we hope as many players as possible will be there to enjoy it.

The initial daily schedule of events is finished and will be posted at the site shortly along with information about The Players Cup Summer Series, a 3-stop circuit that will qualify 5 more players (including 2 Amateurs!) happening in August and September.

Thanks!

The course is looking great! The tees and baskets are now numbered and the flags are being added to the tops of the baskets this week. In addition, there is a nice touch of mulch underneath the baskets, giving the pins a very classy finish to them.

We are still finalizing a couple of pin placements and the tee signs will be ordered shortly thereafter.

Also, the schedule has been updated at the website, including the times for the mini disc and croquet tournaments.

Hello All!

Even though the invites for The Players Cup are being prepared for a mailing later this month, it's been brought to my attention by my contact at the Plantation Inn that the room reservations have already started! I would greatly suggest that if you plan on attending, to at least reserve your room now so it's not an issue later. We upped the reserved rooms from 60 to 80 and it appears that at this rate we may need to add more.

For more info, visit The Players Cup Website (http://www.theplayerscup.org).

denny1210

all rounds will be played from the blue tees.

the white tees were designed with intermediate and advanced players in mind (drives 250-325). the red tees were designed with novice and intermediate players in mind (drives 170-270)

river city signs is currently constructing beautiful signs for the course now named "Red Hawk Landing" after the red bellied hawks that like to hang out on holes 8-9 and 17. these tee signs will be planted sometime in july.

another reminder that our 3 event summer series kicks off on august 6th at countryside executive golf course in clearwater.

The championship course to be used for The Players Cup in November has been titled The Red Hawk in respect to a couple of red-bellied hawks that occassionally appear on hole #17. Naming the course after these magnificent birds seemed rather obvious after seeing them gracefully manuever through the woods and the surrounding areas; hopefully somewhat similar to what your disc will do on the course!

All new photos of the course are up at www.theplayerscup.org (http://www.theplayerscup.org) and video is being shot to make a video "fly-by" DVD that should be available sometime in July.

The limited edition (only 200 made!) CryZtal Avenger will be the first tournament fundraiser discs and will be available in the next few weeks at Sun King Discs (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com) and through Discraft's Sport Discs (http://www.sportdiscs.com) website.

Also, the first ace was hit at The Red Hawk by somewhat-local boy Duane Laudermilch last Saturday. The 280ft Hole #11 left to right shot was hit with a fairly abused Demon. Reports say that his wife refused to pay the obligatory $5 prize after he refused to acknowledge her skip ace with $5 on hole #15 at Earlwood in Columbia, SC during their vacation the previous week.

Nice idea on the bounty.

Any interest in shooting this event (or helping me find someone local who wants to)?

I'd like some video of this course to work with, maybe as a preview. And video coverage from the event itself would be sweet.

Well, evidently you have 20 extremely-limited run discs out there; was the #20 a last-minute thing, or by design? Maybe I'm assuming too much; it just seems the third-richest event would be doing a run several times that, and hundreds in DX. If not just for fundraising, to match the interest. :p So after the Worlds experience, is that #20 about right?

I took Schweb's question about selecting your tee time and put it into action, thus the slightly longer delay. The entry form will have a "preferred tee time", as will the online registration. Obviously the later the registration is received, the smaller the chance that your preferred time slot will be available.

Thanks!

Summer Series event is all set to roll this Saturday at Countryside Executive Golf Course in Clearwater. All eyes will be on Eric Williams, Joe Gabbard, Kevin Ulshafer, and (hopefully) Casey Allhouse as they battle for the two paid am entry spots. Also the Clearwater pro's will duke it out for one pro spot . . . stay tuned

Just a reminder folks - online registration for The Players Cup (http://www.theplayerscup.org) opens tomorrow at 12 Noon EST. Just click on the "Entry Form" tab and then the secure link.

Remember, there are only 160 spots available. With 15 of those being saved for the Summer Series, winners of Am Worlds, Am Nationals, Souther Nationals (Am) and the Last Chance events, that means only 145 will be open to the nearly 600 qualified players.

In addition, we will be updating the Confirmed Players List & Tee Times almost nightly at the event website.

Brad,
I talked to reservations this morning and they said everything was a "go". She also mentioned that she would remind the staff of the event, just in case someone was unaware of, as she put it; "that frisbee golf". In addition, I talked to my contact in sales yesterday as well and she verified that there were reservations already in place. It sounds like it might be an isolated case. If you have any other problems go ahead and e-mail me directly at [email protected]

The layout was deisgned to confuse and agitate non-qualified players...just kidding.

And not that I need to explain this, but it was laid out in an excel file and the 6 time slots per hour would not fit with enough room for names and scores except the way that it is. It makes a lot more sense when you see it printed out.

Had the pleasure of playing a round at the site of The Red Hawk, site of this year’s inaugural Players Cup yesterday with four area pros: Rob Parlaman, Dan Median, Billy Seaman, and Gregg Hosfeld. We had a lengthy discussion regarding how difficult a championship course should be, what “par” means, what constitutes a “putt” and defines the “green”, and what score distributions should look like.

I can sum up our area of common ground by saying that scores should vary on every hole, preferably with three distinct scores each significantly represented. The vast majority of such variance should be due to shot selection and execution and not due to luck.

I pulled together data from this year’s Masters and PGA Championship tournaments and have compared it to what I estimate scores at The Red Hawk will be for cashing competitors this year at The Players Cup. I also put into the spreadsheet a “normal” distribution of 16% birdies or better, 68% pars, and 16% bogeys or worse for each hole. To see the spreadsheet go to:
www.etherbinge.com/sva.xls (http://www.etherbinge.com/sva.xls)

Conclusions: I predict that the average cashing pro will shoot 60.82 per round or -3 for 54 holes. I also predict that the cut line for the cash will be +4.

As to the distribution of scores: This year’s Masters and PGA averaged 16% birdies or better per hole, while I predict The Players Cup cashing pros will average 26% birdies or better. For pars per hole, The Masters averaged 61%, the PGA 63%, and I predict the cashing Players Cup pros will average 53%. For bogeys or worse, The Masters averaged 23%, the PGA 21% and I predict the cashing Players Cup pros will average 21%.

The predictions show that The Players Cup should be comparable to the golf majors for bogeys, but that the distribution is shifted to reflect more birdies and fewer pars. I believe that this is a weakness of disc golf in general and comes down to the fact that disc golf putting is easier compared to golf putting. Without reducing birdies by taking them out of the range of short to average throwers, the game needs to incorporate creative ways of bringing greater risk/reward situations into putting. I find tortoise-shell shaped “greens” like the one on Winthrop’s 1196 hole to be one good way of accomplishing this objective. As course design continues to evolve I look to see more ways in which the 3 putt can be brought into possibility without increasing the random luck factor.

Last Chance Qualifying will take place on Monday & Tuesday (11/14 & 11/15) at The Red Hawk. Event registration for all qualified players ends on 10/31 and any available spots will then shift over and become "open" to anyone that wants to play the LC Qualifiers. There will be a $25 fee to qualify and depending on the amount of open spots we will consider a "cut score" that players will have to beat to qualify.

BIG NEWS!

We have decided to cancel the Monday/Tuesday Last Chance Qualifying and instead, starting at midnight on November 1st, we will open up registration for The Players Cup to any player with a player rating of 900+. This special "open enrollment" period will end on November 10th at midnight effectively ending The Players Cup '05 registration. The $25 qualifying fee will still be in effect and any player signing up during the "open enrollment" will be subject to including it with their entry fee. Any Qualified player that registers after the October 31st deadline will also be subject to this fee. In a word, if you're name is on the Qualified list, it would be in your best intetrest to sign up ASAP!

This decision was made in order to make it easier on folks who planned on making the trip or weren't quite sure if they could attend the Last Chance Qualifiers events for the extra spots that were to become available after registration for Qualified Players ends on 10/31. Because of the amount of available spots, we've decided that in these times when travel expenses have increased tremendously, it's better for any player with a 900+ rating interested in qualifying to be guaranteed a spot if they want to make the committment to attend. We predict that as The Players Cup gains momentum in the future, that this option will more than likely not be available and we would revert back to Last Chance Qualifying events as there will be less spots available at this time in future years.

HOTEL ROOMS!

We have been informed that the guaranteed availability on the reserved block of rooms at The Plantation Inn (http://www.plantationinn.com) is ending on October 18th! After that date, the hotel CAN NOT guarantee availability, although if there are rooms open they will still be available at the reduced price of $89 per night. Folks, this is important! Reserve a room now as you can cancel them with a 72 hour notice if need be!

CAR RENTALS!

We currently have a deal with Budget Rent-A-Car and are awaiting possible deals from Avis, Enterprise and Hertz. Budget has reserved 30 mid-sized cars for The Players Cup. We have 10 each for players arriving on 11/15, 11/16 & 11/17. Simply call 800-BUDGET4 and ask for the reservations under "Mike Barnett". You can then schedule your reservation and modify it to fit your travel plans. Rates start at $156 for arrivals on 11/17-11/21 and move to $206 and $209 respectiveley.

MIDNIGHT Z BUZZZ

As reported on a related thread, the Midnight Z Buzzz (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=1000-TPCMB) is nearly sold out! Sun King Discs (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com) is already into box 3 of 4 of the limited supply. If you're into throwing the 1st Run Buzzz or just into collecting unique collectible discs, then grab some of these beauties!

MODIFIED SCHEDULE!

Of course with the developing news about the open qualifying, there will be some changes to the event schedule, primarily involving the cancellation of Croquet and an emphasis on the DGA Mini Golf. There is a minimum purse of $500 for the DGA Mini Golf and we expect quite a few participants. We will use Wednesday and Thursday to generate a qualifying score. The top half of the qualifying scores will move onto competitive action on Friday followed by one more cut and final play on Saturday.

Alright! I can finally get excited about this event. :D

Is this course permanently up? Or only for this tournament. I ask b/c it looks like the course crosses over/incorporates some bg fairways.

Also, it's good to see how the natural landscape (ponds, vegetation, sand bunkers, etc) demand accurate shots and there is no need to rely on YELLOW ROPE!

Oct 22 2005, 03:40 PM

denny1210
Oct 23 2005, 12:50 AM
The Red Hawk is indeed permanent. For Players Cup tournament play there will be no ball golfers on the Lagoons Nine that the disc course uses. (There will still be play on the 18 hole championship course that the disc course does not use)

I agree on the no yellow rope being a plus for two reasons:
1) The championship layout is up year round for anyone to play on and compare scores.
2) The hazard lines have much greater visibility than the meandering yellow rope.

A little update on the room availability at The Plantation Inn (http://www.plantationinn.com):

All of the standard rooms are booked and there are only 6 Villas left! They are $169 per night and overlook Hole #1 at the Red Hawk course. They have 2 double beds and a pullout couch, sleeping 4 easily. If you wanted to throw a couple of air matresses down you could probably get 5 or 6 in no problem. In addition, they have a dining room and kitchen as well and has two bathrooms, 1 downstairs and 1 upstairs in the loft.

I will post info for a second host hotel later tonight.

Total head count should be around 60-80 when it's all said and done.

As with any inaugural event, we've had to overcome some major challenges. Fear not, as we are still giving away $10,000 for first place and will be adding cash to help balance the overall payout. As for the ladies, we will be offering a "bounty" for the top female finishers, the total is still being determined but trust me, it'll be worth the trip.

We are putting the finishing touches on what will be a top notch players package, the DGA Mini Golf purse is at $500 and The Plantation Inn is readying for your arrival. Prepare to play a fantastic course, prepare to be entertained and prepare to finish up the touring season in style at The Players Cup!

OK, the new Players Cup (http://www.theplayerscup.org) website is up, and does it look sweet!

The list is updated with all of the qualified players although I already have 5 or 6 names that we'll be adding later today.

Also, I wanted to let people know about the online scoring for The Players Cup weekend. On Friday, we will update the scores 3 times throughout the day for ALL groups. Come Saturday and Sunday we will have live scoring for the top 3 groups and again update the other scores 3 times daily. In addition we will have feature interviews and blogs updating throughout the weekend.

Just an FYI, although Tampa International is technically closer, check on flights to St. Petersburg International as well. It's on the west side of Tampa Bay and is only about 8-10 miles from Tampa International.

As for the ride from the Tampa airport to Crystal River, it's probably 1 hour, 15 minutes at the most. The Veterans Hwy/Sun Coast Pkwy (speed limit goes upto 70 mph once you cross into Pasco County) takes you right outside of Brooksville where the highway ends. From there it's 15-20 minutes.

word on the street is ken shot 53 with a sweet eagle on hole 17. we've made hole 6 about .5 stroke harder than it was then and the winter winds have picked up.

predictions:
hot round of tournament: 52
cash cut line: +4
median cashing score: -3
winning score: -19

for hole by hole score distribution predictions see:

Don't forget the Quarry in downtown Brooksville. We call it the Mini-Canyon; it too is an old rock quarry but was converted into a 9-hole executive "ball" golf course and now has disc golf with some great holes and of course, elevation. 9 holes would take 45 minutes to an hour with a cart.

Nov 15 2005, 08:13 PM
The Quarry is definitely less taxing. Not only are you not dealing with all the elevation that the Canyon has, you can drive a cart! But...
You MUST play that Canyon at least once in your life. It is long, 4+ hours, and quite taxing but it is the best course I have ever played (out of 70 and counting). It is phenomanal and well worth it.

denny1210
Nov 15 2005, 09:30 PM
the quarry is a fun, relaxing course with good holes (albeit only 9) and great scenery.

the canyon has awesome views and golf, but can eat up some discs, takes a long time to play, and is physically taxing.

if you're on a vacation to play some sweet disc golf courses, see old buds, and have fun, then definitely get a group and head to the canyon. if, however, you're hoping to be competitive at the players cup and win some cash, then play the quarry and get in an extra practice round on the red hawk. those with 2-3 practice rounds under their belt will have an advantage over those that don't.

festivities are under way!

just finished the discraft team challenge, a very fun hybrid disc golf/ball golf format.

lots of top players have been out practicing the course today, ken climo had a spit out for ace on the blind turnover 380 ft. 18th hole.

the mini golf course is up and 1st round play will be tomorrow.

tomorrow at noon the doubles tournament will happen, meet in the pro-shop at 11:45 to play. ($10 per player) the championship course has a 160 player tournament tomorrow, so LOTS of golfers will get to see the world's best disc golfers playing practice rounds and doubles.

the players' dinner and mandatory meeting will be at 6pm in the convention center, across the parking lot from the main hotel entrance.

tournament play kicks off friday morning at 10
