Sad news, indeed. I saw it on the news this morning while getting ready for work. I couldn't stand to tell my husband when I woke him as I left for work. I'm sure he knows by now. He says they grew up together, going to the same schools in Arlington all their lives. You know, Dimebag lived just around the corner from Veteran's Park. Even though he never played disc golf, as far as I know, we saw the big Damageplan bus drive past the park several times. I gave my copy of the newspaper to my friend at work. She was a huge fan. Her 10 son had even become a fan after Pantera was on the Spongebob CD. And, like she said, I guess we'll have metal detectors from now on when we go to concerts, no matter how small the venue.

I'm just sick. Its horrifying when anyone is shot in cold blood, but this hits me and many, many others on a more personal level.

One reason for that is because Darrell was such a personable guy.

I wouldn't say that we were friends, but passing acquaintences. We, along with Dime's brother Vinnie (better known to some of us at the time as "Bubbles") often found ourselves in the same clubs doing the same thing.

As a musician who was trying to rise above the scrap heap of imitation and over the top crap that much of the D/FW music scene in the mid to late 80's had become, I can tell you that the Bros. Abbott had as many peers who admired them as they did fans.

While I still mourn the loss of one of our other favorite sons from the scene at that time, and friend to me and my bandmates (Dave Williams of Drowning Pool), to have Dime taken from us this way is chilling and wrong on so many levels.

While we all use to joke about never clawing our way out of the D/FW metal abyss, to have those who did and carried our dreams and hopes with them cut down so early in their lives is sickening.

I don't know what else to say. I'm numb.

Just keep this in mind. When remembering Dime, remember him not only as a pioneering metal guitarist (which he most certainly was), but also as a guy who was a tireless worker, unbelievably dedicated to his craft and someone who was as much of a "real" person as any of the other "rock star" types I've ever known.

Think I'll go put Cowboys From Hell on repeat for a few days.

This sucks. Prayers and thoughts out to Vinnie Paul and all Dime's family.

The really scary thing is how this will affect concert security and getting into a venue.

As someone who attends somewhere around 20-30 concerts every year, looks like I'll be getting used to anal cavity searches from now on.

I know I set myself up for this, but it was still uncalled for. Aren't you over our little spat from a few months ago? It's been so long, I don't even remember what it was about.

Jeff, chill in this thread. Save your stuff for other threads, keep this one for what it is. I'm personally a huge fan of metal in all forms and always have been and this is a huge loss for the metal community. Can't really add to what Mark said. Have all my Pantera on random right now. Thoughts are with the families.

Mark, I have a Pantera question that perhaps, because you are a musician, you can answer. When I was much younger I knew of a metal Christian band called Pantera. Don, who grew up with Dimebag, claims they were definitely NOT ever a Christian rock band. Do you know? We were even discussing this last night, probably about the time Dimebag went on stage. Was there a different Pantera?

Dec 09 2004, 04:31 PM
Hi Laura,

I think you may be thinking of Christian rock band, Petra. Pantera was definitely never a Christian rock band.

They were, much to their chagrin, a glammy metal band for a while, before Phil. Dime took a lot of ribbing for those spandex pics, prior to tearing the metal world apart. Those were the "Diamond Darrell" days, before "Dimebag."

Amie just came in and said that they're saying Vinnie was shot to death too on the radio news. So far I haven't confirmed it.

I'm very sad today.

The news this morning stated Vinnie was also shot. They had stated they weren't releasing his condition yet, but was in hospital.
I still say, and my co-worker remembers also, that there was a band in the early 80's, which would put it too long ago to be Dimebag's band, that was named Pantera that played Christian rock. I'll have to keep researching my memory.

I was only fortunate enough to meet Dimebag on two occasions, both times he proved to be an awesome person.

This is horrible. My thoughts go out to all of his family and close friends.

The TV just made mention that Dimebag was killed on the anniversary of John Lennon's death. 24 years to the day. Creepy.

Time to play some Pantera. :(

Dimebag died doing what he loved and had a passion for. I know majority of the fans feel like sh*t today. I know I do.

I met Dime here in Corpus back in 96, at a meet and greet. He talked to everyone he met, shook their hand and signed whatever they wanted him to sign. He was the most vocal during the meet and greet.

I was just watching CNN as they detailed this story. It seems that the assailant began shooting just as the band started its first number, hitting Dimebag several times, likely killing him instantly. He then began firing into the crowd, killing three concert-goers. A police officer was patrolling two blocks away and heard the "shots fired" call, rushed to the club, and went in without backup. He saw the assailant with Vinnie in a headlock, holding the gun to his head. The officer called out and then fired one shot, striking the assailant, who later died of his injuries. Vinnie's life was most likely saved by the officer's actions as it appeared that the gunman was going to shoot him at any moment.

Five lives gone, how many others affected forever from the trauma, both physical and emotional...

Who knows what drove the assailant to start this? With him gone, we will likely never know. But it gives pause to consider whether passion over silly little things is worth the vitriolic and demeaning language that seems to fly about quite readily in today's life.

Every life is precious. Every person is worth respect.

It is impressive to read that so many DGers actually knew him on a personal basis. It is also touching to read that he was thought of so highly by many of the folks I know and respect. He deserves a moment of our respect.

What a tragedy it is when anyone falls victim to a madman's actions, but it is especially poignant when the victim is known by so many of us.

May his spirit find peace.

To point out the obvious, the problem here was how easy it was for this coward to get into the club and start killing innocent people. i (along with other logical thinkers) think that club security being tightend would be the exact opposite of scary, in fact that would be the best way to stop these kind of tragic things from happening.

WOW - this just hit home a little more that I thought. I was reading the newest story on this today and recognized one of the victims names - Chris Paluska.

Chris was shot in the shoulder and put into intensive care. He is now stable and should make a full recovery. He was DamagePlans Manager.

Chris golfed casually and he and I grew up together in Oklahoma City where we went from Kindergarten all the way through our Senior Year together. I had no idea what happened to Chris following graduation and was shocked when I saw his name on Yahoo today. I am very glad to hear he made it out of that madness and stupidity with his life.

If any of you happen to know Chris or how to get ahold of him, please let me know.

How cool is this segment from the Dallas Morning News web site:

==========================================
One of the police officers guarding the front entrance offered to play a Pantera CD if anybody had one. Minutes later, Vulgar Display of Power was blasting from the Ford Mustang squad car as fans' heads bobbed to the beat.

The officers explained that they're fans, too.

=========================================

They have police standing guard at the home of Dimebag in Dalworthington Gardens. That house is right next to Veteran's Park.

Two people employed by the band, Chris Paluska and John Brooks, were in Riverside Hospital on Friday morning with Paluska listed in good condition and Brooks in serious condition.

this wouldn't be crazy john brooks would it :(

I have not read it, but heard the shooter "knew" somebody at the door and was not searched.

Again- i have not read that, and only heard it from co-workers- i do not know if it is true.

That is pretty cool thing for the cops to do. Very surprising.

I just got a little update on this from a good friend in OKC. Apparently Chris was one of the guys on stage who tried to stop the shooter. He took 1 shot right above the heart, which collapsed his lung, and then exited out the back.

He has been upgraded from Critical to stable condition. Brooks is still in critical condition. Chris is also the manager for 3 other bands including Drowning Pool.

From what I read:
the club doesn't use metal detectors. The dude jump over a wooden fence and made his way into the club from an open door or something.

You get searched very Rarely at a rock club and metal detectors are hardly ever used. Its different at big venues but Most clubs dont search. In OKC at the Diamond, I got onstage with Phil and Superjoint and was never searched coming thru the door. Hopefully the Security measures will change now.
