always in the bag--these discs are my bread and butter:

- Wizard 174g - putts and approaches
- Pro-D Wasp 179g - approaches and short drives
- CE Classic Roc 168g - anhyzer approaches
- 4 CE Firebirds (162 FL, 161 FX, 166 FX, 174 Flattop FL) - all levels of stability for flicks and backhands in any wind conditions
- 174g Z-Wildcat - long backhands and hammers

often in the bag:

- 2 Wizards 172g
- Photon Talon 174g
- DX Piranha 174g
- Proline Leopard 174g
- DX Cheetah 174g
- DX Gazelle 167g
- DX Proto Firebird 174g
- 2 JK Opaque Valkyries 174g
- CE Rhyno 171g

currently in testing:

- X-Wasp 174g (I like this one, though I am still getting a feel for when it turns)
- Proline Beast 171g (not sold on this one yet--similar to the Wildcat, but less predictable)
- DX Roc 180g (ace with this last weekend!) - this is a weird Roc that I inherited from a friend--already beaten, very flat on top, and has a chalky feeling to it--not like any other Roc I've seen.

Apr 02 2003, 09:02 PM
3-180 11 time KC Rocs, new to beat
3-168-174 KC Eagles 10 to 11 time
1-173 CE Eagle
1-175 CE classic Roc for upshots
2-175 classic rocs for putting
1-165 beat CE Valk for long rollers

Praticing with a few z-wildcats...but trying to stick to a few models. Seems to be helping my game near the end of 36 holes, as I dropped 5 pounds of my bag with less discs....more strength on the final holes.

Don't have them in front of me so can't tell you exact weights but I do know they are all 170 .

2 QJLS-Long range w/wind and low ceiling/tunnel
shots.
2 Z-Wildcats-Long range against a moderate wind.
2 RAMs(old)-Go to disc for short hyzer drives and approaches when there is room.
1 Cobra-For short line drives and short anhyzers.
1 JLS-For anhyzer drives.
1 (beat really bad)JLS-For sky rollers and big
anhyzers.
1 Polaris LF-For overhand thumbers.
1 CE Spyder-For approaches without room for RAM.
1 EXP-For heavy into the wind drives.
1 Wizard-Putter and short approaches.
I carry a Z-X2 for some shots that I feel that are right for it. I have always had a thing for X2's. Probably because most of my aces were with them. Several of these discs I might only use once or twice a round but wouldn't want to be without them.

These two are on the "try me, but don't tell anybody" list. (J/K My-Hero) /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

167-69 Elite X Wildcat (I love the flight of these, having seen other players at about my power and skill level throw them extremely well. Haven't tried it myself yet, but I've got one waiting to be thrown.)

? Weight Z-Wasp (Do they go up to 180 like that disc they seem to be modeled after?) Its the only Z disc that I'm always sold out of, so I figured that was a good sign. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Apr 03 2003, 04:03 PM
These discussions are always interesting.......

Here it goes:

(2) Z-Wildcats (For maximum distance)
(1) Z-Talon (More controlled low ceiling shots)
(1) Z-Predator
(1) Z-Xtreme
(1) Comet (short anhyzers)
(1) Photon Wasp, extremely beat. This is my go to disc right now, it will pretty much go where I throw it.
(1) Z-Wasp (overstable midrange)
(1) X-Wasp (stable midrange)
(2) APX Swirls (one old putter, one new approach)
(1) XS, beat up for rollers

As much as I hate to say it the beat up comet may quickly be replaced by the worn in photon wasp. I better bite my tongue. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Don't do this mix at home. it's dangerous. as a player whose first golf disc was a black master, and a former ultimate player, i got used to plastic that most current golfers would consider
to be understable. Here is what i carry.

Drivers: 174g Z-Wildcat
164g Z-Wildcat
174g CE Valkyrie
170g CE Valkyrie

Mid-Range: 175g Z-Cyclone
172g JLS

Approach: 175g Hawk
175g Spider EX

Turnover/Multi-Purpose:
172g Express
174g beat-up Stingray
170g beat-up Cheetah

Sidearm approaches: 175g Soft Rhyno

Funky little rollers and short controlled shots
i am one of the few who carry:

180g Gopher

Putter: 175g Omega Super-Soft Putter

I know....very strange....at least i don't carry my 230g nite-glow 50-mold Midnite Flyer anymore.

1 omega driver
1 Sentinel new

1 2nd run ce valk
1 3rd run ce roc
1 beat roc
1 3x JK aviar stable
1 3x JK aviar straight
1 beat to crap glo aviar

I dont' really carry all of these at once for every round, depends on the course i go to and whats needed. I'll average 14 discs in the bag.
One of these days i'll learn to throw some of em.

What's in my bag? A lot of dust from lack of use, maybe a squirrel and some nuts. Last years beat-up discs. But I did order 5 Pro beasts now that the last of the snow is almost melted up here. In my bag:

for backhand drives, 2 or 3 KC tee birds
for sidearm drives 2 Ching Bombs
for high speed turnover shots a Valkerie
for low speed turnover shots a Z-PuttR
for putting a few aviars
for sidearm rollers an X-Clone
for into the wind drives a CE Firebird

some beef jerkey
candy bars
condoms

This week for fun:

133g #1 hyzer (mostly trick shots)
127g #1 helix (main driver)
110g roc (used most putter)
150g DX players package valkyrie (super long shots)
Also have a premium magnet and birdie, but the roc is fine for putting if there's little wind.

Not used to the light stuff; it's tuff on my elbow until I get better tempo. After a bunch of ultra-light disc throws, it's easier to get the timing for throwing the 150g stuff. Is it possible that throwing a bunch of 150g stuff will give you ideas on how to throw max weight with better tempo/technique?

xterramatt
May 04 2003, 08:07 PM
Will, try a beat Roc or a worn in QJLS for those anhyzer shots. Stand perpendicular to the pad when you start your throw, and don't face forward when you release for those anhyzer shots. you will get a lot more power and a stable disc will hold it's line longer when you throw like this... at least for me. A lefty who has a lot of righty holes to deal with.

Primary Driver: Clear Orange Elite Z XS 170g - Z plastic helps for stability and I get great skip out of it. It also takes a beating very well. One of the farthest discs Ive ever thrown

Midrange: White Roc 170g - don't use it that much, usually approach with my XS. But it works great for short, tight shots that a driver isn't suited for.

Putter: Blue Aviar 174g - don't use that much because of its weight. Used to the light weights of my driver and midrange, the heavier putter always seems to hit the bottom of the basket. Yet I keep practicing.

Others: Clear Yellow Elite Z XS 169g - Used as a backup driver for hazardous shots like water or other instances where I might lose my favorite driver. (backup for xs)

White Screen printed Elite Z Reaper 175g - Used for straighter shots because of its stability. Also works great in the wind because of its weight.

Clear Yellow Elite Z XL 174g - Used as a back up driver for hazardous shots like water or other instances where I might lose my favorite driver. (backup for reaper)

What do you call us idiots that putt with the $20 ones? That must make me beyond cool! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Seriously, about a month ago I started putting full time with the Z-Challenger and anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm right now putting better than I ever have.

This disc feels so good in my hands that I want to hold it all the time. A bit sick, perhaps, but if I keep dropping putts as well or better than I am now, I'll just have to be a little twisted. /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Z Challengers were made for World Doubles only. I'd be surprised if there were any left. Also, there are a few 2003 Worlds models that if anyone throws, that person should be shot! I've thrown them all, the first run blue stays in my bag. I use the D when it rains.

Z Wasp
Z Wildcat
CE FX Firebird,
and maybe a Z Talon depending on the wind.

This is my any-course/situation combination...
I'm so impressed with the Z-Wildcat, that I could possibly see it replacing my Tee Birds...but since there are 2 4-year-old SE TLs in my quiver, this won't happen anytime soon. The Speed Demon allows me to throw an extremely overstable disc a long ways...reliably. Firebirds just feel right when I'm faced with a headwind, or severe L>R crosswind... Ain't nuthin that will replace my Demons/Rhynos.../msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Paul, the Speed Demon just screams outta my hand, then hyzers like a lawn dart falling to earth...but all the while, it is making forward progress! I threw it last night into a 20-25mph headwind...and this little 157g parked itself 20' out for my first bird of the evening. I would normally have to heave a heavier Firebird with more UMMPHHH...but instead I just snapped this thing...and it took off! I must confess that I've not experimented with light Firebirds, though... It is the coolest-newest disc out there...though my UV Challenger raises more eyebrows.../msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif Am looking forward to actually breaking my SD in...and I'm NO-WHERE-CLOSE to having this thing fly straight...YET!! I'm gonna get a few more, and in even lighter weights...we masters have to persevere to preserve ourselves!

Ellis the tank is a beadless soft rhyno and is less overstable than the rhyno. Use a soft rhyno as your main putter for three years and you have just created your own home made version of the tank.

I carry a small bag (the smaller Innova one) and try to do more with the discs I have in it rather than carry a huge tour bag -- although sometimes it's tempting.

Right now I have:

174g CE Firebird FX (long drives in the wind, big hyzers)
174g CE Teebird TL (long drives, windy conditions)
172g CE Valkyrie (4th run) (long drives, low wind/straight)
175g CE Valkyrie (3rd run) (really long drives, turnovers)
174g KC Banshee 9X (some forehand shots, hyzers)
170g DX Leopard (anything turnover/roller)
178g DX Roc (bottom stamp) (most 200' or less shots)
174g CE Spider (approach, short drives, more stable than the Roc)
175g Z-MRV (approach, even more stable than the Spider)
2X 174g U2 Prostyle Putters

Only 11 discs. Not bad! The 3rd run CE Valk has a 490' ace on it and I really want to retire it, but I haven't found anything comparable yet. I have an unthrown Valk from the same run but I can't bring myself to take it off the wall. I might buy I used 2nd/3rd run to replace it if I can find one.

I've been playing around with the Elite X Putt'r from Discraft and I am thinking about putting/approaching with those for awhile. Everyone else around here throws Aviars for just about everything and I just can't get consistent with that disc, no matter how hard I try.

Anyway, there you have it.

Really don't have a favorite 'driver' at this point. Just depends on distance and wind. For a fairly open 350-foot hyzer its going to be predator usually, sometimes the X2.
Forehand is going to be Monster for longer shots or ones that need to skip, X-Treme for shorter ones.
MRX comes and goes, depending on how much I play. If playing a lot, I use it more. If rusty, I can always rely on the x-treme to do what I want it to without having perfect form.
Anything over 400 is going to be an XS or Wildcat.

3 175 aviars, one new, one with a little wear, one completely beat.
1 173 CE Leopard
1 174 Z-MRV
1 174 Z-Wasp
1 174 XL, very beat up
2 Z-XS 174 & 169
1 174 Z-Wildcat
1 173 Z-X2
2 Z-Talons 174 & 171

Triangle sport area mini.
A pack of Pall Mall Filters.
Sandpaper.
Black marker.
Towel.

This list will probably be revised soon since i have a triad of CE Aviars and a duad of Z-Crush's coming.

The only thing i use the wasp for is forehand approaches. On any balanced course i throw every disc in my bag at least once during the round. Of the drivers i probably use the heavy talon most.

2 first run red CE Firebirds
2 first run red CE Valks (main drivers)
1 CE Test of 2000 JLS (best rolling disc ever)
2 CE Aero's
1 Texas 10 CE Aviar
1 Classic Roc
1 JLS (I found this discs in the creek and have never taken it out, I use it for short rollers {under 400ft))
1 T-bird 1st run - super beat up, used for very short rollers (under 300) and turnover shots
4 Roc's
- 1989 Circular sky's tour (will not throw near trees)
- Pro with worn out stame (this disc was purchased at PIAS and use to be Worms disc he lost at Texas States {I talked to the guy who found it and also has his name on it)
- Texas states stamp (1998)
- Regular stamp
2 Omega 1.11 - my very soft putters

Without looking I could not tell you the weight of any disc in my bag. It just does not matter. I very rarely look at the weight of a disc when I throw it. When I purchase discs, I try to find the heaviest ones available. Ususlly over 170, but I have throw some good discs inthe 160's before.

As far as what I throw

air shots
325 will usually throw one of the Valks but throw the CE JLS for turnovers or straight shots.
275-325 Roc almost every time, for hard left shots, skip shots or big hyser shots I use the CE firebirds (also the most over stable disc in my bag)
150-250 1st choice is my Classic Roc
-150 usually CE Aero or CE Aviar sometimes one of the putters

On the Ground
400 CE JLS maybe the best disc in my bag. The best rolling disc I have ever rolled.
325-400 Regular JLS, these are not as stable so turn over sooner
200-325 1st run T-bird, this disc has been in my bag for a long time, it has been run over by several cars and hit several trees. It is not even flat anymore. But it is a good discs for short rollers
-200 usually roll a forhand with the CE aviar or one of my putters for shorter shots.

Anyone who knows me knows I will roll when I can. I love to roll. If I can't reach the basket in the air, I will roll if the ground will let me. I do not worry about the wind. I will roll into the wind, no problem. They just don't roll as far (they will also roll more right when they turn over)

My favorite course to play is Waco bottom nine. I role several of these holes (I have managed to loose some great discs in the brazos though)

I learned to roll from the King (Ziggy King) at Fritz park in Irving. I love to roll holes 2 and 8. I have birdied both several times. (hole 2 will teach you how to roll straight. If it turns over too much you are OB, if you roll it to right you are in the creek)

I do not throw "sky rollers", my rollers usually hit the ground less than 75ft from the tee. I loose acruacy when I try to get the big air, I also loose spin on the discs. When I get a good roll, the disc will speed up when it hits the ground because it is spinning so fast. (at least it looks that way)

My June 24th entry above is relatively unchanged. I've added:
171g 11x T'Bird
175g XD
170g Z-Cat (replacement)
157g & 173g CE Valks 2nd run - for speed /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

I've removed my dx Rhyno and lost both of the Z-Cats in water. Other than that, my bag is the same.
I'm playing the Mighty Shunga Nunga Open this weekend in Topeka, KS...and with the water shots there, I'll add some predictable plastic that I'm not so attached to. Can't even imagine losing any of the above...

It's hard to throw anything else but Innova since were in Wisconsin. Allot of people push Innova here. Plus Barry Schultz lives here, how can you argue what he throws, he's #1 in the world. I won't say I don't have discraft discs, but I never use them. I would say the only disc from discraft that I would consider using would be a Wasp. Funny thing, it looks like a Roc. hmmmmm

My bag
172 dx Cobra - I could get rid of
173 TL - Long and a little flippy
172 Candy Firebird - nice hyzer disk
174 Candy Eagle - starting to flip
170 dx Whippet - short hyzer - 300 ft
10x T-bird - great 320 ft disc
172 JK Valk - good disc will come back after a 300 ft anhyzer
174 JK Valk - long and sweet
170 JK Valk - nice and flippy
172 First run Beast - holds anhyzer line
174 second run Beast - long
171 Viking - starting to like long but a heck of a hyzer at end
(2) 171 First run Candy Spider - one spider has 2 aces, the other is trying to get one - best disc in my bag
(2) 170ish dx Rocs - mid range anhyzer
new Aviar putter - long putt shots
old Aviar putter - 30 ft and in putt shots

I have 3 empty spots in my bag, took out 1 disc and have had a serious run of bad luck with discs.

The 3 empty spots were previously inhabited by the following:
168ish Candy Firebird
172ish Candy Eagle
171 dx Stingray

a Starfire is definitely going in there soon.

"nobody needs 18 - 24 discs"
Exactly what is ur basis for this Kid??

Maybe if u only play 2 or 3 courses.

I would say that i use every disc if i play 2 or more rounds.

Too many discs can complicate things. Climo said that you need 7-8 discs to cover all situations. Stokely said in his video that he carried 9 discs and those 9 discs could get you through any situation.

I am not saying that you have to put a specific number on it but the more discs you throw, the less you will know each one.

Soft Wizard
Medium Wizard
Z Wasp
KC Roc
X Comet
DX Roc (really beat up)
Valk (rollers)
CE Teebird (TL)
KC Teebird
Z Talon
CE FX
E Speed Demon

I have 12 discs but really sometimes that seems like too much. I am thinking about ditching the Speed Demon because everytime it hits the ground it always get some funky skip or roll. Some days it is predictable and some days it is not.

I really don't "have" to have both the Z Wasp and KC Roc. They do close to the same thing. KC Roc is more grippy, so I get better releases. I throw that one more often. But, the Z Wasp is great for short range skip shots.

I use the Soft and Medium Wizard. I like the feel of the soft the best but it beats up pretty fast. So, I only use the soft for putting and I use the medium for upshots and very long putts.

You can throw as many discs as you want but I find that if you learn about 10 really well, they will become much more predictable. That is just my opinion, though. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Oct 02 2003, 05:06 PM
Kid,
Well if the real MEN say 9 discs, it sure does make it hard to argue.
I think that the reason that I carry so many discs is if i lose a disc during a round and that Valks are always in transition from being slightly overstable to zip over understable.

Have u tried the new Starfire or Viking yet??
The Viking is kind of kewl because it is fairly long, 400ish, and still cuts over fairly nasty at the end, almost like a firebird.
I couldn't get the Starfire to go much further than my other discs, but it was a good disc in the hand.

dannyreeves
Oct 02 2003, 05:22 PM
Tried them both. I don't like the Starfire because of the wide rim. I don't like the Beast or Monster for the same reason. For some reason they screw up my timing.

I used to use an 11x Teebird for the long hyzers and slight headwind shots and then I tried the Viking and liked it better. It is better into the slight headwind because it is flatter (less wind resistance) than the 11x. Then I tried the Z-Talon (thanks MY-HERO). That seems faster and the rim is a little more narrow (which fits my preference).

The Viking is a good disc but I like the Z-Talon more.

Oct 02 2003, 05:46 PM
I know what u mean about the rim, some discs just seem to be gripped better than others.
I used to throw a Z-XS and a Z-XTRA, but they got beat up and since this is firmly INNOVA country, they were easier to replace with INNOVA.

Besides, as we all know, the Plastic does not make the Golfer, the Golfer makes the Plastic.

I never said I played a round with 18 to 20 discs, I usually weed out what I need for each round. So I have normally 9 to 12 discs I use in a tourney. I feel the same way also, plastic is plastic, I just perfer Innova.

1 comet, 3 cyclones(1prepat), 3 mrvs, 8 talons, 2 magnets.

New setup during my best period of play to date. I know the golfer makes the plastic and all that, but I'm really enjoying this.

2 Challengers 174 X & Z (Putt with the Z most of the time)
2 Z-Crush 170 171 (Great disc for my power to get extra D)
1 Z-Talon 170 (opaque plastic)
2 Z-Wildcats 168 & 169 (the shizzle)
1 Z-Xtreme (thumbers, short spikes, grenades short skip hyzers, short forehands. A real neat utility disc for certain shots.)
1 Z-Predator 173 (So far more reliable than a Talon into the wind and fast)
2 Elite-X Wildcats 166 173 (These are my number 1 go to drivers now, unless it gets too windy, then I'm throwing the Z's)
1 Elite-X Xpress 169 (A different kind of utility disc /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif)
1 Z-Xpress 165 (These are underated discs for actual golf purposes. Practice field and message board distance stars they'll never be, but for making a golf shot when you need to...)
2 Z-Wasp 178 175 (Both clear flat color stamped)
2 Pro D Wasp 178 (Now the most thrown disc in my bag.)
1 Elite-X Storm 177 (Straight and glides)
1 Elite-X Comet 177 (Straight until halfway through the flight then bends predictably right.)

Wherever you see two on that list, most of the dupes are back ups in the side pocket of my bag where they don't get in the way of the ones I reach for regularly. I do throw both the X-Cats.

I've had a lot of fun learning and setting up my first Discraft bag ever, and have been playing some good golf in the process.

There is nothing wrong with being Manufacturer specific, it is all up to you and what you feel most comfortable throwing!

1 - Gateway Tour Bag

2 - Speed Demon (172)
4 - Apache (171,172,173,175)
3 - Sabre (174,174,170)
2 - Warrior (172)

Not all 26 discs are used, 19 of them are used regularly - the other 7 are in the pockets of the bag cuz you never know when you are gonna loose one or need that specialty disc.

How's that bag feel'n, Metal? /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

You've switched to "ALL" Discraft? Doesn't look like it. But you are trying to let everyone think you have by all the posts on all the threads or you're trolling for a sponsor???

I love my mom. She got me a Texas Edition Team bag from Revolution (with Proline Quads) for my 28th birthday. She doesn't play, she just looked around on forums and decided I needed it. How cool is that?

Now I can pack everything I need:
----plastic----
1 FX Firebird @ 171g (old plastic)
3 FX Firebird @ 172g (old plastic)
3 JK Pro Valkyrie @ 175g (1st run)
1 H-Speed Demon @ 172g
1 Z-XPress @ 174g
2 KC Pro Roc @ 180g (10x)
1 Champion Shark @ 180g (Texas hits 100 stamp)
4 JK Pro Aviar-X @ 174g (3x)
3 minis
----other----
1 4"x6" clipboard with waterproof clip cover
2 3" pencils
1 Orange Lacrosse Ball (for trees)
1 Shammie (with grommet)
1 small birdie bag (in ziplock)
1 rain shell
1 Golf Umbrella
1 Tube Off Skintastic Sunscreen with DEET
1 Gallon-sized Ziplock for my phone/wallet/keys

I've got room left, and the bag's so light and comfortable. The only shortcoming is that the drink holder could be better - a bottom and a drawstring would kick [*****] (like the lightning bags).

My old tour special finally got retired for newbies to carry - it holds an array of discs:
leopard, shark, stingray, aviar, wizard, reaper, arch angel, and dragon are all in that bag, as they seem to be good for beginners.

So how are those JK Valks working for you Daniel?

Nov 04 2003, 01:03 PM
Love 'em.
It's real hard, at this point to decide which discs I love best, between the FX, and the two JK discs.
That rainbow stamp JK Valk's started playing hide-and seek with me - I go out jsut before dark to play, lose her in the dusk, end up giving up and playing out, and then find her on the way back to my car. Three games in a row now. She taunts me.

1 Viking
1 KC Banshee
1 Pro Gremlin
1 Polaris LS
1 ZXL
2 ZXS
1 10x Roc
2 JK Valks
1 Champ Aviar
1 Challenger
1 Champion Cobra
1 ZWasp

And I don't know how to reply without "replying to someone else's post"

I toss with my right and left hand.I'm orininally a righty and learning my left hand has allowed me to cut a good portion of my discs out of my bag. My hands/arms have different throwing styles and even different grips. I use a 4 finger "power" grip for my Left hand and a Birdie grip for my Right. I max out at about 400' righty and about 300' lefty with drivers, 325' right and ~270' lefty with mids.

-Drivers-
173 Glow Cyclone - These just work for me! left or right. Used for distance in any direction.

160 DX Raven - My roller as of now. I just found it and it makes a decent roller.

-Mid-ranges-
169 G5i Demon - Beat into a straight to left/hyser disc for either hand but usually just my right. Also used for pancakes, tommohawks, thumbers, skips. My favorite disc. 100% controllable for me! Ace producer!

175 G6i Demon - Beat to completely straight flights. Will also hyser or turnover but I use it for only straight shots. Also preforms well in a tailwind. Mostly for right.

179 DX Roc - Practically new. Just experimenting with it. I don't particularly like rocs. Ok for straight to right lefty shots.

175 Z MRV - This is my go to lefty disc. I can make it do anything I want but I use it mostly for lefty s-curves, straight to right, straight.

-P&A-
174 H Chief - Hard mold. used only for lay ups and lay ins from ~80. any direction.

172 G9i Wizard - Super hard. Used for all putting. Also used for drives around 200. any direction.
