USADGC - Day 2

USADGC - Day 2

Saturday, June 12, 2010 - 18:59

Who's cookin' on Day 2 at the USADGC?

As the smoke clears after day 2, David Wiggins Jr has a 3-shot hold on first with a smokin' 54 rated unofficially at 1031. While David and Dad headed out to tour the Henry Ford museum, Richard Wysocki from Medina, OH matched David's 54.

Medina is also home base for the Jenkins disc golf powerhouse family. Of the nine players who shot under 60 yesterday, only three did it again today while 12 other players broke into the 50s today

Link to Scores

Tied for second best score of today with 57s were Thomas Mikowski and Grant Anderson from Michigan who moved into the top 20. The weather cooperated again with no scattered thunderstorms as predicted. But it was steamy humid out there making it uncomfortable for players not used to it. Temps got into the mid-80s before the day was over. It might have been the best conditions for scoring low on Toboggan.

Before getting into some pictures and highlights for today, recognize that Discraft feeds the players seven meals during the event with the Player Dinner plus breakfast and lunch each day. The smiling cook in the picture is "Just Jill" who has been happy to grill up some burgers and dogs for the players and staff each day.

Wiggins had some stellar holes but even he was human on a few shots. He started early with an eagle 3 on the uphill par 5, 726 ft hole 2 with a "routine" 30 ft putt. There must have been some magic in that longer flagpole TD Phil Shelton mounted on the basket today for better visibility because two more players also threw in eagles from way down the hill.

The "tree gods" helped David on hole 10 where he slipped an early forehand thru a nonexistent gap. However, the lie was not good enough to provide a decent putt for birdie as Dan Beto looks on.

On hole 13 at 516 ft, David drove up to the flat area about 65 feet away and brushed enough chains on his putt to almost secure the rare 2. Overall, he had three 4s (6, 7, 15) and three 2s (8, 14, 16) for that superb 54. And if he could redo that short armed upshot on 7 that almost nailed the spotter hiding in the bushes, it could have been 53.

First day leader, Drew Miller (KY) didn't have the magic from yesterday and shot 62. That still puts him in a tie for 6th with Eric Ford (IN) at 6 down. Here's a highlight for Drew where he nails the biride putt on the #11 uphill pump of 316 ft. He also had a great escape to save 4 on hole 7 where he squeezed a recovery roller thru the thick bushes guarding the lower left side of the green.

Jason Anderson (MN) and Robert Martinek (ON) were tied with Wiggins going into Day 2 and are still hanging in there with a pair of 60s good for a tie for 3rd, 6 back of Wiggins. In the photo below, Anderson is throwing a forehand as one way to thread the tight gap on hole 16 at 354 ft. You can see the spotter in the orange shirt to the right on the main route to the basket. Anderson's best hole was #10 with one of the few deuces yielded by that hole.

Martinek ground out a solid round with just one deuce on the big, blind, righty hyzer hole 8. Here he's driving hole 17 which is one of two holes where you can really open it up with not too much risk going left or right. You can see the pin 755 feet away on the plateau in the upper left corner where the group ahead is finishing out.

Michael Rabin (MI) slipped a little but remains in a tie for 8th at 5 down. He's converting a great birdie 3 on the tough dogleg hole 15 at 567.

Eric Ford (IN) matched his first round 59 with another on Day 2 to tie for 6th with Miller, 7 back of Wiggins. Here he's trying to convert a long putt for a birdie 3 on 15 but settles for a solid par 4.

Jonathon Kind had the toughest day of those shooting 59 the first day. He slipped to 65 falling to 32nd at even par for the event. He's driving the fun-for-righties hole 14 with a big downhill hyzer of 375. Which window is best? Probably the one farthest to the right where the cut grass heads into the woods. But players have found success knifing thru other "windows" whether intended or not.

Rounding out your top card for Sunday in addition to Wiggins and Martinek are Richard Wysocki (OH) in second and Leif Swenson (CA) in third. This photo shows Wysocki executing a powerful upshot on the 915 downhill hole 3 in the first round to reach the green.

Swenson has been the quiet, solid competitor with a strong arm posting two sub-60 rounds. He's dropping in this putt for a birdie 3 on the long 915 ft, hole 3.
