Jenkins, Carr Top Fields at 2010 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships

(Jacksonville, North Carolina)--If there were any concerns about the status and skill levels of women in disc golf, then one need go no further than this year’s edition of the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships to put their mind at ease.

This late season PDGA Major has assembled seven of the top 10 female Pros in the world, along with bevy of our sports past World Champions, like Elaine King and Vanessa Chambers.  In addition, the 43 amateurs participating in this weekends event should give our fans great hope for the future, as well.

After the first day of action, the pro side is providing great drama at the historic Jacksonville complex, with Liz Carr and Valarie Jenkins clinging to a two throw advantage over reigning World Champion Sarah Stanhope.  Jenkins carded just one bogey during her second round, which helped her move to the top of the leader board with Carr, whose two late miscues on holes 17 and 18 moved her back into a tie for first place.  The side-arming Stanhope was enjoying a solid second round, until she carded a seven on hole 13, dropping her two throws off the lead and into third place.  A talented foursome of Carrie Berlogar, Paige Pierce, Pam Reineke, and Elaine King are lurking only four throws off the pace going into Saturday’s play.

Catrina Allen is the class of the Advanced Women’s field so far, as she has forged an eight-throw buffer over the rest of the field.  Dee Proffitt is holding off the two-time Women’s Advanced Masters World Champion Marie Fry by three throws.  Carol Silverthorn leads the Advanced Grandmasters, while Erin Swiger and Debbie Scott are separated by only one throw in the Intermediate division.  Our Recreational players have Jennifer DeVries holding tight to a two throw lead over Gilda Lane, Tammy Melton, and Christy Belanger.  Victoria Scott is enjoying the event in the Junior 10 years old and under division.

Play will continue on Saturday with conditions almost summer-like with 90 degree temperatures in store.
