2009 U.S. Masters Disc Golf Championship

Monday, September 14, 2009 - 09:13

The 2009 US Masters Disc Golf Championship was held Friday through Sunday, September 11-13, at La Mirada Regional Park in Los Angeles County, California. With the two daily-play 18's converted in to the Golden State layout, a par-69, 10,000 foot plus monster course, players were tested over three rounds. While stellar play was evident throughout the weekend, the most significant event was the revelation that the tournament will, from this year forward, be called the Tim Selinske US Masters Championship, in honor and memory of the recently passed Hall of Fame member who was the guiding force and director of the event since its inception. The Championship will also move to Augusta, Georgia in 2010 and possibly begin a rotation around the country, to honor Tim and give more players a chance to play in this significant event.

The Pro Masters division came down to a final round battle, with only 3 throws separating the four men on the lead card. Jim Oates, Mike Raley, Jim Hagen, and Steve Wisecup were each in a position to take home the winner's check and trophy and each had a share of the lead at one time or another as the final round progressed. In the end, it was Oates that survived at the top with a two throw lead over runner up Steve Wisecup, with Jim Hagen and Mike Raley close behind.

Carrie "Burl" Berlogar led wire to wire to take her second consecutive Masters Championship on the women's side over fellow northern Californian Anni Kreml. Cheiko Kakimoto of Japan and Emina Weaver of southern California filled out the women's field.

The days were mostly mild with slight winds, giving perfect weather for these rounds of disc golf. The La Mirada Disc Golf Club provided volunteers that served as spotters, course maintenance helpers, scorers, and in other capacities. The inimitable Jerry Ross manned the starter's role as is customary at La Mirada tourneys and kept things rolling along on time. Suzette Simons of SoCal Disc Golf took on the important duties of Tournament Director and did an admirable job of managing the several divisions and the organizational needs of this national Championship.

Other Champions crowned at the 2009 US Masters were: Gregg Hosfeld, Pro Grandmaster; Laurie Cloyes,Pro Grandmaster Women; Dave Dunipace, Pro Senior Grandmaster; Bert Cotten, Advanced Master; Paul Wright, Advanced Grandmaster; and Indigo Brude, Advanced Womens Master.
