2015 Memorial Championships

2015 Memorial Championships

The Memorial Championship presented by Discraft always seems to come down to some sort of nail-biting finish and this year was no exception. The course that hosted the finals was the infamous Fountain Hills and as difficult as that course is on its own, Mother Nature decided to throw in heavy wind gusts and occasional rain.

Does this sound familiar? Warm and sunny weather. Val Jenkins leading in the Open Women’s division. Paul McBeth leading in the Open division. If it seems like you’ve read this before, that’s because you have. The 2015 Memorial Championship is starting to sound like another event from earlier this year, the 2015 Aussie Open.

Open Women

The sun had barely broke the horizon when the first card took to the tee this morning at the 2015 Memorial Championships presented by Discraft. The Open Women’s division would kick off the event at Fountain Hills DGC, launching their drivers over the water on Hole 1. It was a brisk morning but as the story normally goes in the greater Phoenix area, it wouldn’t stay that way for long. In all honesty, by 10AM it would be misleading to describe the weather as anything less than perfect, especially for late February.

As the end of 2014 draws nearer and nearer, all we can do is reflect on what an incredible year it has been for the sport of disc golf. It seems that almost every aspect of the game we know and love is growing at an ever-increasing rate. There were more tournaments, more players, more added cash, more spectators, and more disc golf companies/manufacturers, just to name a few. With that kind of exponential growth, we can and should expect 2015 to be off the charts.
