Dave Feldberg eagled the par 6 opening hole, and birdied the next 3 to sit at 5 down after 4, en route to a 10 under 56 and a 6 throw victory today at this year’s PDGA Tour EuroMajor event, the Scandinavian Open in Skellefteå Sweden.

Also shooting 56 and finishing second, Nikko Locastro got himself into contention when he aced the 102m/337’ #9 with a Valkyrie.

However it was his solo birdie 3s on 16 and 17 that broke what was a 3 way tie with Cale Leiviska, and hometown favorite Jesper Lundmark. Cale completed a USA sweep of the top 3 when Jesper’s tee-shot into the wind on 17 turned over into the OB.

Representing Innova Champion, Gateway, Discraft, and Latitude 64 respectively, the leaders put on quite a show for the estimated 350 spectators who applauded their efforts from start to finish. Between them they birdied or eagled every hole except for 18, including a star frame on #2s Island green and 3 birdies on the narrow 123m/403’ #10.

However none of them could claim an Albatross, which local player Daniel Strandberg achieved when his 3rd shot from about 90m/300’ on the 350m/1155’ opening hole nestled in the basket. (Has anyone else ever had an Albatross in disc golf?)

SO USDGC qualifiers

In the ladies division Birgitta Lagerholm won by 7 over fellow Swede Karin Magnholt, with Melody King and Angelica Frantz tieing for 3rd. Robert Buzasy led a Swedish sweep of the Masters to secure his 1st Major event title.

SO press coverage

Scandinavian Open Press Coverage

All in all, it’s been a wonderful week in northern Sweden – the forecasted rain even stayed away today, reflecting the efforts of the co-TDs Torbjorn Degerström and Vivi-Anne Åstrom and the rest of a terrific host team. Our congratulations go out to them and to the many other volunteers who collectively delivered an event and a competition of the highest standards. For those of us lucky enough, it will be an honor and a privilege to return to faraway Skellefteå in 2012. Tak!
