PDGA Members Mike Holloway and Dan Foley Still Alive and Kicking on CBS's Survivor: Worlds Apart

Mike Holloway, Survivor: Worlds Apart

Whether you know it or not, if you have been watching Survivor: Worlds Apart on CBS this year, you’ve been watching two different disc golf loving PDGA members battle their way towards the coveted prize of Sole Survivor. After nine episodes, both Mike Holloway #40121 of Texas and Dan Foley #71149 of Maine have yet to be voted off the show, with another exciting episode airing tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

This week we’re featuring an interview with Mike Holloway of the “Blue Collar (Escameca)“ tribe. Mike mentions disc golf several times on his Survivor profile page, so we thought we’d ask him a few more questions about the sport he loves so much.

When and where did you first start playing disc golf?

I actually started before I even knew it was a real thing. A couple of friends of mine and I had regular old Frisbees. We would go to different parks here in Texas and also the mall parking lot at night. Then we would make up holes and play and we kind of started taking it a little more serious. One day, a guy in a park told us about an actual disc golf course and it blew our minds. Veterans Park in Arlington, TX. There was a little convenient store that sold discs and that's how this love affair began over eight years ago!

Did you love it right off the bat, or was it something that slowly grew on you and got you hooked?

From playing in a parking lot to now competing in tournaments and minis, I was taken with the game at first . It then became an obsession! Many of you can relate I am sure. There are so many things that keep me coming back: community, competition, and growth! I love to play rounds with new golfers. Seeing the moment it all clicks and it changes from “Oh I am just out here” to “Hey this sport is fun! why have I never played before?” is what makes it so addicting.

What are your favorite courses? Are there any you haven't played that are on your bucket list?

My favorite and home course is North Park in Haltom City, TX. If you have never had the pleasure, this course is designed by a guy named Brandon Melton #31898 and he did a wonderful job putting it all together. We have various work days to improve the course which is always met with a smile and a round after. This course has produced many Texas Teams Champions. Outside of state, my favorite would be in Edora Park in Fort Collins, CO. Such a beautiful course.

How did you end up on the cast of Survivor? Was getting on the show something you've tried to do before or was this the first time?

My Survivor story is kind of a fairy tale in the fact that I have been a fan from the very beginning. I had made video's for 10 years,  but never filled out the application and sent it all in. About two years ago, I was finally in a place where I thought I could pursue this dream. I sent in the video that now is a compilation of 10 years of silliness. Roughly a month went by with no word then out of the blue my phone rang. I cannot even explain the...OK, wait maybe I can. It's the last hole of the tournament and you're tied with the competition. You have a 28 foot putt to win the whole thing; the excitement and the nerves put it all in check and perform.

The tribe watches Mike Holloway during the tenth episode of SURVIVOR on the 30th Season, Wednesday, April 22 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Sometimes when a round of disc golf is going really bad, you feel like you just want to get through it...”survive it”, if you will. Are there any lessons you've learned on the disc golf course that you brought with you to Survivor: Worlds Apart?

Disc Golf has taught me so much in life and it really did help me in the game, e.g. being in pressure putt situations. One thing I love about our sport is ultimately it’s you against yourself. Having all the tools is great but if you cannot calm yourself or let a mistake go you will trash your whole round. It’s the same in Survivor. You can choose to focus on one little detail that takes you off your intended path. The variety of people I have had the pleasure meeting over the years, playing rounds with, and being able to relate with everyone on some level, was such a help.

Is there anything you can tell us about the upcoming episode on Wednesday night at 8/7c?

Wednesday night is quite possibly the most drama filled episode of the season. If you have never watched or you’re a longtime fan, this is a don't miss episode. The whole game changes. With only five episodes left, we are on a crash course for an explosive finish. I am not just saying that because I am on the show. The people left in the season are all hungry for a win. Tune in, and if after this episode you are not hooked then come to Texas and we will settle it over a round of disc golf!

We want to thank Mike Holloway for his time and we wish the best of luck to both Dan Foley and Mike on the episodes that remain. Tune in to the new episode of Survivor: Worlds Apart on CBS tonight and every Wednesday night at 8/7c. Good luck guys!

That was great to hear that Mike and Dan are PDGA members. I have a request, or suggestion and that is to use your platform to promote our sport!
