Players Cup Friday
The Friday morning sun broke through the trees onto a beautiful and chilly morning. The temperature would heat up, and the play would keep pace. On this first day, our field of 64 players would be reduced to 16. The Sweet 16, to steal a phrase.
Steady Ed Region: Matt Dollar makes some noise and is one of the surprises of the tournament, he survives through to the Sweet 16 and will play Bradley Williams, who has looked dominating. Bradley won the Moccasin Lake Open last weekend, besting a star studded field beat five strokes. Justin McLuen knocked off Phil Arthur in the first round but could not repeat the feat against Paul McBeth. Paul’s opponent in the Sweet 16 is Dave Feldberg, who survived a good run from Robbie Bratten (2 & 1) in the 2nd round.
The player that emerges from the Steady Ed Region will play the top player from the Dan Roddick Region.
Dan Roddick Region: The bottom half of the region, Eric McCabe and Will Schusterick, went pretty much according to plan. Or at least expectations. They will face each other in the Sweet 16. They will also be driving home together after the tournament. This will be an interesting battle. Ken Climo, after a well fought battle with Jeff Fiedler, had to come from behind (winning the last two holes) to finish off Mitch Sonderfan. George Smith defeated Michael Johansen in a true battle of the titans and will face Ken in the Sweet 16.
Walter Morrison Region: Nikko Locastro has played conservatively so far and outlasted Rand Eberhard and Jordan Cowles. The pickem favorite was very humble in his wins, complimenting Rand on his several “putts” from outside 80 feet. Nikko will play JohnE McCray in the Sweet 16 as JohnE got by Jeremy Koling and looks to be playing very well. Paul Ulibarri advances and has not yet been seriously threatened. Beckett Carduff, a local who got into the tournament in the last week and is putting up a crew of players and staff at his (and Kris Ann’s) house. Beckett beat Kyle Maute convincingly in round 1, and then beat Devan Owens 4 & 3. Paul Ulibarri may have his hands full with this true Cinderella story.
Tim Selinske Region: Cale Leiviska survived a back and forth battle with Brad Hammock. Both players were up by multiple holes and the lead changed four times. Cale will face Avery Jenkins who moved into the Sweet 16 with his victory over Geoff Bennett. Steve Brinster won both his matches strongly and will play Garrett Gurthie who outlasted Cam Todd on the third sudden death playoff hole. On the second playoff hole, Garrett laid up a 60 foot putt forcing Cam to sink his 45 footer to push. Cam drained the putt only to lose the match one hole later.
The winner of the Tim Selinske Region will face the winner of the Walter Morrison Region in the Final Four.
Tomorrow, during the live coverage of the Player’s Cup, we will find out who is in the Final Four, and perhaps more importantly to their psyche, how they get there.
We will be covering two cards (four of the matches) on Saturday. Vote for who you want to see us cover at the web site (top left corner).
Coverage begins at 9 AM with a warm-up show and we go live around 10 AM.
