One Round To Rule Them All

One Round To Rule Them All

The Memorial Championship title is up for grabs.

Saturday, March 1, 2014 - 02:00

Round 3 of The Memorial Championship presented by Discraft is complete and with that brings an end to the tournament for a majority of the competitors involved. The amateur divisions played their final round today at Fountain Hills Park and many of the professional division competitors would hole out for the last time as well. To continue on to the final round in a professional division, you must have an overall score for the tournament that puts you in the top 50 percent of your division.

The Memorial Championship, the first event of the National Tour Elite Series, always has a huge turnout in the amateur divisions, specifically in advanced, which is almost always sold out with a slew of players on the waitlist. This year in the advanced division, history was made. Anthony Barela (#44382), fresh off his win at the A-tier in Las Vegas, the Gentlemen’s Club Challenge, took the gold at The Memorial Championship as well. He was tied for the lead after round 1, in the lead by a few after round 2, and would hold on to the lead to finish the event ahead of second place finisher James Beckner (#49519) by three.

What’s historical has nothing to do with his score, it’s his age. He just turned 14 years old last week. The average unofficial rating for his combined rounds was 988, which includes his 1018 rated first round at Fountain Hills Park. Congratulations to Anthony, or “AB” as he is often referred, and all of the other winners in the amateur divisions.

The story on the women’s open division didn’t change much from yesterday. Paige Pierce (#29190) started the day with an 8 throw lead over second place Catrina Allen (#44184) and she would only grow that lead today on the Vista del Camino on the XL layout. She’ll start the final round tomorrow at Fountain Hills Park with a 14 throw lead over Catrina. Val Jenkins (#17495) sits just two throws behind Catrina and it’s likely that the real battle on the lead card will be for 2nd place.

The men’s pro division couldn’t be any closer. Paul Mcbeth (#27523) and John McCray (#9852) moved from the chase card to the lead card both of which are now tied with 17 year old Drew Gibson (#48346) for the lead at 21 under par. Jared Roan (#49210) started the day on the lead car and will remain on the lead card for the final round just a single throw behind the other 3 players.

The second, third, and fouth cards are all stacked as well with everyone involved being single digits away from the lead. Nikko Locastro (#11534) shot the hot round for the day with an unofficially rated 1082 round finishing with a 47 throws, 13 under par. He leads the chase card and will be joined by Will Schusterick (#29064), Nate Doss (#11794), and Steve Rico (#4666).

Phoenix is forecasted to have rain for the first time in almost 11 weeks tonight. If that does in fact happen it could mean a wet and sloppy Fountain Hills Park for the final round. Tune in to PDGAlive.com for live scoring and throw-by-throw commentary for what will once again be a spectacular fight for the championship tomorrow.
