PDGA Develops New Mission Statement

PDGA Develops New Mission Statement

Thursday, May 7, 2009 - 12:32

The PDGA spring summit was held on April 30 and May 1, 2009 at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, GA where a very cohesive group of dedicated board members, staff, and consultants engaged in some of the more productive meetings in recent years.

Two full days of agenda items were discussed, debated, reviewed and hammered out by your elected representatives, with valuable input provided from several groups of interested members who made the trek to Georgia for the meetings.

One of the biggest accomplishments of the summit was the drafting and approval of a new vision, mission and values statement, which had been an ongoing goal of the association for several years now. Using input from the member survey that was conducted in 2008, the board and staff conducted a white board meeting to define and discuss the goals and mission of the PDGA. Additional ideas and alternative ways of looking at things were also put forth by the consultants and the visiting members in attendance. The goal of the board is to review the mission statement on an annual basis to ensure that they are kept up to date and that they accurately reflect the current mission of the association. The resulting document was approved by the board of directors:

Vision Statement:
The PDGA is a membership organization dedicated to the promotion and sustainable growth of disc golf.

• Player participation
• Tournament development
• Spectator participation
• Course development

• Media and sponsor relations
• Public education and outreach

To sustain the growth of the organization, membership, and disc golf by means of:
• Financial stewardship
• Asset and resource management
• Membership support

Value Statement:
The PDGA is driven by the principles of:
• Integrity
• Accountability
• Lifetime fitness
• Transparency
• Professionalism
• Sportsmanship
• Diversity
• Personal Growth
• Inclusion
• Fun
• Volunteerism
• Environmental responsibility

The purpose of a mission statement is to sum up an organization's reason for being. It explains intentions, priorities, and values to people both inside and outside of the group. It is meant to guide and to help a group stay focused on the things that are most important to it. If an organization ever questions whether to take on a project or choose a particular course of action, they can look back on their mission statement to see if the proposal is consistent with it.
