Midweek Mayhem in Crown Point

Midweek Mayhem in Crown Point

Thursday, August 8, 2013 - 00:25

Another day of beautiful weather in Crown Point, Ind. left players hungry for their second day of individual Competition at the 2013 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships. Divisional leaders from the first day required perfect play to withstand the army of competitors nipping at their heels. Some withstood the pressure on their shoulders while others struggled to hold their place on top.

With three rounds in the books for all competitors by the end of Wednesday, August 7, participants have reached the half way mark in the competition. Players have seen almost every course they will play with the exception of a select few divisions.

The story for the day comes out of the Open Women division. On Tuesday Catrina Allen set herself on top of the field by a narrow lead. Wednesday she struggled to hold onto that lead. She carded a 66 on the Lemon Lake Gold Course while Paige Pierce managed a stellar 61 with a six on her final hole. This gave Pierce a two throw lead over her closest competitor.

The Gold course was a difficult playing field for these Open Women across the division yet Pierce managed to use the length of the course to her advantage. Ragna Bygde of Sweden stands in second and threatens Pierce with her solid play. Both of these women have the skill set to accomplish a World Champion title, but in three more rounds of championship disc golf anything can happen. There are still great players close behind and some are previous World Champions that can still push for the lead.

The Open Men tackled the Lemon Lake Blue and White Courses to round out their first three rounds. Paul McBeth took hold of a solo lead throughout the day’s action. He sits one throw above his closest competitors, Cale Leviska and Cameron Colglazier. Nathan Doss entered the day tied for first but struggled throughout the third round and dropped into a tie for fourth place and onto the second card.

In the Open Masters division Barry Schultz held onto his lead and still stands on top of his division. His consistent play is going to be hard to top if he keeps it up. He looked smooth and worry-free on the course while he steadily handled the Lemon Lake Gold course on Wednesday. Schultz currently finds himself on top of the Masters division by a slim two throw margin heading into day three.

Previous World Champion Barrett White entered day two with the lead in the Open Masters Women division but faltered as fellow competitor Anni Kreml lit the course on fire and dominated her division. At the end of the day she held onto a two throw lead. This small lead does not end White’s hopes though since the remaining days still provide an abundance of challenging disc golf. Anything can still happen.

In the remaining divisions, leaders have begun to catch stride and place distance between themselves and their divisional field of competitors. Be sure to see the full list of results.
