2014 USWDGC Preview

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - 18:57

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the latter half of September. The National Tour is done for the year, both the Amateur and Professional World Championships have come and gone, and with each passing day there is less and less sunlight available for us all to be outside throwing discs. But don’t let that get you down. There’s still plenty of exciting disc golf coming up this year, with one of the most anticipated events starting in less than 48 hours!

The 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship (USWDGC) has arrived and this year it hits close to home, literally. For the first time in its 15 year history the USWDGC will be held right here in Appling, GA at the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC). For the disc golf obsessed, the IDGC should certainly be an item on the bucket list. It’s home to the “Steady” Ed Headrick Memorial Museum, three world-class championship courses, the IDGC Pro Shop, and as you probably already know, it’s also the headquarters for a majority of the PDGA’s staff.

The competition this year is as tough as it’s ever been. Now with 99 total women registered, it’s already the second largest field in USWDGC history, with last year’s event in Portland still holding the record at 105. The Open Women’s division makes up a plurality of the registered competitors, setting a new record this year of 29. To put that into perspective, the inaugural USWDGC in 1999 had 21, as in 21 TOTAL competitors across all the divisions. It’s amazing to see the growth that women’s disc golf is experiencing and we’re ecstatic to have the best of the best duking it out right in our back yard.

Last year’s USWDGC champion Sarah Hokom #34563 will be defending her title against some of the most talented women the sport has ever seen. In the Open Women’s division alone, there are five different PDGA World Champions, Hokom included. Incredibly talented golfers the likes of Catrina Allen #44184, Paige Pierce #29190, Val Jenkins #17495, Ohn Scoggins #48976, Elaine King #3090, and Liz Dorries #31162, just to name a few, will all be pushing themselves to their limits in the hopes of taking home the title.

The courses at the IDGC are not to be underestimated. Despite their beauty and brilliant designs, all three of the courses on the property have the capability of breaking a player mentally. With some of the best minds in disc golf course design behind their layouts, this isn’t exactly unexpected. They are built for world-class competition, and that’s what they deliver, every time. More information about each of them can be found on the IDGC Courses section of PDGA.com.

The action starts on Thursday evening at 5:00pm EDT with Mixed Doubles on the “Steady” Ed Memorial course with Round 1 of the actual tournament taking place the following afternoon at 1:00pm via a shotgun start. The course schedules and assignments, as well as a downloadable version of the caddy book, and much more can all be found on the 2014 United States Women's Disc Golf Championship page.

We’ll be providing coverage of the event with live scores every day on PDGALive.com coupled with commentary, pictures, and videos via @PDGALive and @PDGAWomen on Twitter. We are happy to announce that we also have the one and only Marty McGee of McFlySoHigh Video here to help with coverage as well, and we’ll be sharing his videos each morning to the masses. If live scores, tweets, and videos aren’t your thing, you can always stop by PDGA.com for daily articles as well, starting tomorrow evening with a summary of the Mixed Doubles competition.

We’ll see you in Georgia!
