Reigning World Champ Paul McBeth hit a 35 foot (10.5 meter) birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win the Latitude 64 Copenhagen Open - The Major this afternoon. And while McBeth’s 13 down 54 tied the Valbyparken course record, his victory was also in part due to misfortune suffered by Oklahoma leftie Devan Owens.

For the most of the final round all indications were that Devan would be crowned King of Denmark. After McBeth birdied holes 2 & 3 to reduce the lead to 1, Owens built his advantage quickly back to 3 where it remained all the way through hole 13 as he played quietly brilliant, in the zone golf, making one after another smooth drive and clutch putt. However all began to change on 14 when his 45 footer for birdie hit dead center and spat out. Devan then dropped another shot to McBeth with a bogey on #15, before the gods conspired to reject another dead center birdie putt of his, this one from 25’ on 16. Suddenly and stunningly the match was all square. After the 2 players carded birds on 17, Owens pured his drive on 18 only to leave his forehand approach short. His pressure putt from 37’ was low leaving McBeth to calmly step up, take careful aim, and slam home the winner.

Sitting 3rd Will Schusterick wowed the crowd with a drop in eagle on the 291 m (954’) 17, his 2nd eagle of the back 9, to close within one, but his par on 18 meant he would finish no closer. 

It was a truly dominant display by the Tour-ists as Americans swept the top 8 positions. With the top 7 finishers having already secured invites, AJ came in 8th to claim his coveted ticket to the USDGC along with the top 4 Euros, Germany’s Simon Lizotte in 9th, and a trio of Finns, Pasi Koivu, Lassi Hakulinen, and Mathias Söderström who “finn-ished” tied 10th.

In the other divisions Paige Pierce claimed her 3rd Major title over Val Jenkins by 6 and Sweden’s Ragna Bygde by 13. Germany’s Jan Bäss won the biggest event of his frisbee® career in Masters, besting Swedish veteran Christer Köhler by 2, while another Deutschlander, Marvin Tetzel, was the class of the Junior field, averaging 987 rated golf. 

All in all it’s been a fabulous few days and competition in Denmark. On behalf of all the players, the PDGA salutes our hosts, TD Sinus Frank and the deep team of volunteers from the København Frisbee Klub for a job well done and an experience not soon to be forgotten. Tack for alt!
