From what I've seen, Gateway bags are only slightly less durable than Revolution...and most of that is due to Revolution's truck vinyl bottoms and more durable frames.

This is anecdotal evidence based on observation of (mostly) other people's bags though.

The Lightning large bag may well have the worst durability I've encountered, mostly because the seams that hold the end pockets to the bag will eventually tear under the abuse of carrying a 1 liter drink bottle in the drink pockets that are designed to hold such.

I can attest to the Lightning large bags being horrible for durability. The first round I took it out the bottle holder started ripping from holding a 1 liter bottle of water.

Fortunately, discsunlimited, who I purchased it from allowed me to choose a different bag to replace and just told me to keep the thing.

That's because Dennis and Annetta are the nicest folk on the planet!

The Wall City cubes were indestructable. Too bad they aren't made any more. I still have two of them and they are great small bags. Plus they came in purple.

From what Ive seen, Revoloution is comparable to Gateway, but isnt any better.

Dont believe the hype. The dividers are garbage, even the new injected molded ones. I have a friend who has went through 3 already. The dividers on the Gateway bags are no prize, but are consistenly outlasting the Revo dividers around here.

Truck vinyl on the bottom? Well, maybe, but the bottom of my backpack STILL looks brand new and is on its 4th year. I dont know if its "truck vinyl" or not, but the only issue Ive ever had with Gateway is the zipper on one pocket....and that was last season, after 3 solid years of solid beatings.

Revo bags may be great, but Id never put one above a Gateway bag, and I dont care what sponsored Pro is using them.

IMO, thier backpack bag sucks and is stupid in design. I also think the horseshoe opening is a waste.

While I don't totally agree with you, I have found the horseshoe opening a bit troublesome to get used to on the Team bags.
I have not used either of the backpack bags, but am interested in getting one. The plus side to the Revo in my opinion, is that there "seems" to be more storage space on the whole for non-disc items, or more discs.
The Gateway bag is all one compartment, right? So, Chase, or any other Gateway bag users, how many discs can you fit in there, and what about extra gear, etc.?
And anyone that uses the Revo. How many discs? Extra gear, etc.?
Both bags cost about the same, and quality is said to be comparable, so for me the deciding factor is space and storage.

The Tour bag holds like 20 discs and has two big pockets for storage. I know for a fact that this bag has more storage but a backpack bag like mine doesn't.

So how many discs and how much stuff can you comfortably carry in your backpack bag? And which bag do you have?

I think I have 16 on my backpack bag and I can hold towels and stuff when i need them but I usually only carry a sharpie, a few minis, and a birdie bag.

Bradley,

I've had the Revolution Backpack bag for about 5 months now, when I decided to upgrade from my Texas Team bag. At the moment, I'm only carrying 11 discs, but it can hold 16-18 or so comfortably in the main compartment. Sometimes the discs on the edges are a pain to get out, because of the horseshoe design, but at most I carry 14 in the main compartment so it's no big deal. I keep my putter(s) in one of the side pockets, and in the other side pocket, I keep bug spray, Sharpies, minis, tags, all that good stuff.

The top compartment is huge -- I keep several gallon ziploc bags filled with 1) 4-6 microfiber towels, 2) a butane lighter fluid and an extra lighter, 3) granola bars and trail mix, 4) a birdie bag, and 5) a cardkeeper scorecard wallet holder thingy and pencils. This takes up maybe only a third of the room in that compartment, and I have plenty of room to stuff a vest, shirt, or fleece in when I get too warm halfway through the round.

I've also noticed that it's balanced better for me, higher up on my back, compared to a bag with quadshocks. It's only been a few months, but the bag isn't showing any wear and tear at all. My frame has a small crack in one of the sidewalls, but thats because I pulled it out and cleaned it after a particulary rainy weekend up at Marshall street. The crack doesn't affect the functionality of it, as it's still super sturdy and gives the bag shape. I've also never had a problem with my discs falling out, because of the rounded bottom edge of the frame.

If you're out at Tyler again anytime soon, I'll let you check it out in person.

Take it easy.

Well, first off, I was a little rough on the Revo bags. They are a good quality bag, and what I said was only my opinion.

That being said....

I carry between 12-14 discs, and have room for more, if I wanted. I also use a Blind Crow bag divider, made of all aluminum, ( these are protos, not yet available. when they are, we will be selling them. ) which adds the weight of another disc, maybe 2. These dividers shrink the space, but wont break. For me, its irrelevant, as I dont carry a ton of discs. ( This frame, however, does work to keep the bag in longer lasting condition, as the dividers made by both Gateway and Revo actually undermind the structure of the bag. Truck Vinyl or not. )

As far as extra space, the Backpack bag holds everything I need, and still has left-over space. This includes winter type gear, and all misc. crap Im hauling around. If I ever buy a different bag, its not because of space issues.

If not for the divider, I could probably carry between 16-20 discs, maybe more. It depends also on what your using. If you like to carry 4 putters, like I usaully do, then theres less space for drivers.

Chase/Bigs-
Thanks for your replies. That is the type of info I was looking for. I have a TX bag right now, so I know about how much I carry,. I am interested in getting a backpack style bag and wanted to see if the Revo/Gateway would translate into more or less space.

Chase- I do carry 4 putters, so thanks for mentioning that. I've read your praise of the Blind Crow frame in the past. Any pics? Or any idea when it will be available to the public. Will it only fit the Gateway backpack?

Bigs- So you can carry the kitchen sink with you? That sounds about like my bag.
I'm not sure when I'll get to Tyler again, but I will for sure. That was definitely the most fun I've had at an Ice Bowl. And if we ever get our course put in the ground and have our own Ice Bowl, we are, without a doubt stealing the hot dog split sundaes. We will of course give you guys all the credit and appropriate royalties.

Just my .02, but the gateway backpack was very uncomfortable when I was caddying for Guy last weekend , that thing just plain hurt. 2nd round, I was caddying for Chris, and his revo backpack was perfect. You could put twice the load in the revo backpack and it still feels less that half the weight in the Gateway backpack. Ergonomics is a major factor in a purchase for me !

PK ( Blind Crows owner/ designer ) has been constantly changing his design, trying to find the most durable yet lightweight material to use. The Quad Cities have been lucky as we area players get to be his testers. Ive had 4 differnt designs, the latest being pure aluminum. These seem to be the bset version, but are also the most expensive, so the production to the public has been slow. We had the third version in stock, but he has asked me to pull it, because of possible durability issues. Dont read anything into that, he expects these things to outlast the life of bag, and also encourages people to use them as chairs, and to hammer throw thier bags, if needed. ( both of which I do, constantly. )

They should be ready before the season starts up here ( March ) and are universal, for the most part. The Gateway Backpack divider design is actually a little taller than the regular bag models, as the divider is designed to extend the life of the bag.

Ill send out PMs when we have them in stock. They usaully range in price from 25-35$. Possibly a little more for the full aluminum divider. And, again, they will work for any bag, just slightly different designs for some.

Default What bag should I get?

I'm about to get a new bag. Right now I have the Innova Deluxe bag. I only want to hold another couple discs, but the big thing is I need more storage space. Out here Texas, I have to carry at least a couple 32oz gatorades and usually some snacks just to survive the summer rounds.

I'm looking at upgrading to the Innova Tour bag or the new revolution bag. What is everybody using and what do you like/dislike about it?

I've had just about every kind of bag except the new innova champion bags. I love the revolution carolina bags. 2 32oz drink holders. big side pockets, lots of color choices and the only one that hasn't shown any wear after the first 6 monthes of use. they feel a lot more well made. the new roll cage frames are awesome. my buddy has had a revo for 6 years and is still in great condition. I a now a revo lifer.

I bought a new carolina tour revo about 6 months ago also, with the injection molded frame. I was almost 100% satisfied until I just felt like the frame could use improvement - mostly unhappy with the divider. When contacting BlndCrw@aol.com to make an aluminum frame for me (which I have now and is a huge improvement) it was mentioned that the truck vinyl on the bottom of the bag wears easily. I immediately checked my bag and he was right, the four corners of the new frame had worn the black surface off of the vinyl and were showing some threads.

The cordura is brilliant and the bag still looks brand new (if you don't take a peek at the underside), I just wanted to bring this up as not many people have mentioned it before. I am considering attaching some small feet or leather pads that would absorb the wear on the bottom of the bag.

I love the liter+ sized cup holders as they are easy to access while walking to your lie and there is plenty space. I got the Revo straps - 10 bucks cheaper, you get what you pay for but they have a strap in the front that helps focus weight on the chest - and the bag squeeks like a mofo still after 6 months so there's that too, lol
Never seen a bag I would rather have yet though..

I got the New Innova Tour bag and I love it. I can carry about 24-26 disc just in the main compartment and putter pocket combined. This leaves plenty of space in the two side storage sections for snacks and personal items. The two bottle holders are nice as well. One on each end for good balance. There is a long zippered compartment for minis, rule book, scorecard, ect on the back of the bag. There are three pencil/pen holders on the outside. It is built nicely with good stitching and has two rubber feet that keep the bag from resting on the ground directly which I really like. As far as price, I got mine off Ebay for $55.00 including shipping. IMO, This is a great bag and will definitely do the job without having to spend a lot of money!
