Accumulating enough points will get you invited to Worlds.

There are also yearend tour awards for top point earners and many use their final point totals as bragging rights within their state in a division.
Points are also the only thing some people "win" at an event. I'm surprised I haven't seen a T-Shirt yet that said something like, "Went to Worlds and all I got was a stupid point!"

I think the top point earner in each state (AM or Pro) should be rewarded by the PDGA with some kind of gift certificate to the PDGA Pro Shop.

A gift certificate equal to the amount they spent in $2, $3 and $5 player fees?

Something like maybe $10-$20. They'd only be giving out 50 of these.

I think they got some kind of Pin. Atleast they did in the past. But to me points are about as useless as ratings

PDGA should definentlly recognize at least the the Indiana AM player with the most points & pony up a 09 membership.
Seriously though there should be some type of award/ aknowledgement for most points, most improved AM, etc. |

One slight flaw I see:
This proposal benefits those who play big A-Tiers. I will play 6 or 7 tournaments this year and might break 350 points. The winner from Bowling Green Ams always walks away with +2000. How would you address this discrepancy?

I posted this before; the competition committee should consider the following as a change for the points system:
To minimize the effect of huge anomalies like BG, it might be better to do something like: Points Earned = Percentile points * sqrt(field size) * Tier factor. Thus one win in a 512 person division is worth about the same as two wins in a 128 person division or 3 wins in a 64 person division.

Now that Majors award points to players, this somewhat offsets the power of Bowling Green. But not playing Bowling Green makes it extremely difficult to compete for overall points.
There are other events that one day may get close to the size of Bowling Green. The First Class Challenge in Des Moines is one example. That is a great event that is run by outstanding individuals on some of the finest courses in the country. |

Chuck, I thought that this year we were supposed to get points at Majors. If that is so why none for worlds?

Now that I look at the stats it looks like the Pts were awarded on your points total but doesn't shot how much next to the event.

Probably since that part of the display hasn't been updated pending the new website they are working hard to bring online soon.

Other than Worlds, what are PDGA points for? Are top points earners awarded in either of the Pro/Am fields? The 2012 Worlds reduced the minimum standards and eliminated the criteria of top 25% per state. Will the 2013 Worlds criteria be increased or remain the same as 2012? Are there any other events that have a criteria for PDGA points?

I'm sure there are also some local series that use PDGA points as their means of qualifying for awards and series finale tournaments. |

Used to be the top point earner in the world in each advanced and pro division received a nice trophy. I have a couple of them for Am Master. Kelsey has a couple for Advanced Women. I think they still award those trophies.
Going further back in time, used to be the top point earner in each advanced and pro division in each state got a nice PDGA lapel pin. Kelsey and I have a couple of those too. They quit doing that. When they were doing those trophies and pins, it was not every theoretical PDGA division. They started with a few divisions and were adding a division every year. I don't know what they did for 2011 or might be doing for 2012.
