Default Muleshoe Disc Golf

There is talk of a disc golf course in Muleshoe. There is nothing set yet. Nevertheless, it sure is exciting to have Muleshoe on board for a quality disc golf course! The plan is to look at the park and disc golf in 2011 as the city has other very important projects to complete first. The likely park is big, very big, with a brand new pool in the NW corner, baseball fields on the eastern edge, a pond in the north central area, a walking track around the entire park, and many park benche and playground areas. Generally, the park is relatively open, but there would be some good trees to work with. We sure could get another 'quality disc golf course in the area'. More later.

There are new 'rumblings' about disc golf in Muleshoe. The park is huge, just not much elevation or trees to work with. We'll work something out though! Hope continues.

Meetings soon with Muleshoe. With a few projects done, a disc golf course is now being looked at with more possibility. Thoughts are to try and get more trees, more elevation into the wide open area. We'll see. Yep, hope.

It's coming. It is highly likely that a course will be installed. October is the key date for budgeting. Likely a course would then be installed over the fall/winter of 2011/2012. The plan is to put in a nine with enhancements and then see how things go. The city manager is if full agreement that disc gold is a great addition to the very large park. Yeehaw!

It is official. DG is a go for Muleshoe! The plan involves a nine hole course with dual tees and dual basket locations. The course is pretty flat so the plan is to enhance a few areas with some elevated baskets, elevated tees, berms and mounds of assorted shapes and sizes around baskets, and berms and mounds in key fairway locations. There are a few local players already that will be helping out. I'm sure Clovis and Portales, only around 30 miles away, will be very supportive! The course is pretty much laid out and will start just south of the tennis courts and flow generally counterclockwise. In addition to the above there will be a 1,000' hole and quite possibly one double mando hole (many of you know my thoughts on mando's). Running a portable event will hopefully help decide a few design issues. So, the plan is to look at a portable event in around late October or into November. More later. I'll ocasionally also post at the P-Villan (Portales DG) and the Laguna (Littlefield) facebook sites.

Oh just FYI - Muleshoe: to Lubbock - 69 miles, to Amarillo - 100 miles, to Brownfield - 85 miles, to Plainview - 60 miles, to Levelland - 56 miles, to Portales - 37, and to Clovis - 31 miles....according to Google Maps.

One step closer to yet another course in our area! Baskets have been ordered! I'm looking at having an event in early November. I'll try to let everyone know when and more details as we get closer, but probably like other kickoff events recently, we'd play red nine, then white nine in the am, take a lunch break, then do a red nine and a white nine in the afternoon. I have options for a few added holes if needed. More later.

Okay, the plan is to have a portable basket tourney on November 5th with registration from 8:30 - 9:30 (sharp). There will be a players meeting, then round 1 (red then white), lunch break, then round 2 (red then white) at apx 2:00. The plan also is for a final three holes for the top four scores. There will be a $10 entry with optional $5 ace pot (top three paid if no ace hit and with girl or child guarantee). We will meet at the pool building of the brand new pool at the NW corner of the park. Directions - from intersecton of 84 & 70 (main light), go 1.1 miles NW on 84, turn left (SW) on W 16th, go three blocks to park. You can see the pool building slightly to the right. I'd really like to have a good crowd to show Muleshoe what disc golf is about!

Course is pretty much laid out with help from Arlyn (local) and Eric. We'll play red then white for each of the rounds. If needed, I've got two extra temp holes ready to go also. I thought the TECH - ut game would be a night game, but dang it is a Sat am game. Ouch. Bring your headphones. I'll have a radio playing at DG central. Hope there is a good turnout to support Muleshoe DG.

It's to be nearly 70 degrees on Saturday, but windy. We should get a good test of the course. C'mon. Bring your baskets. Bring your donations for CTB (hint). And, bring your game. And, have fun along the way.

Well, we had the first ever Muleshoe discs flying at a tourney event. And, oh WERE THEY EVER flying in the wind! We started out with some wind – as in 20-30 mph and by the end of the first round, the wind was up around 40-50 mph. We broke for lunch and lost a few players. I decided to shorten the second round to only nine holes. When we started the second round, there were sustained winds around 50 mph and I think gusts up around 60 mph. Needless to say, it was a challenge…it was almost comical. Overall though, I thing (hope) everyone had a good time.
We had 34 players come test out the course. I’m not going to read too much into the scores (this was one of the reasons for running a portable event). PLEASE, if you have comments on the course contact me. Here are some happenings and stats from the tourney. Tom Tom took the CTB on hole 1 on round 1. Jordan took the CTB on hole 7 on round 2. They shared five discs and a strap (many of which Tom Tom donated anyway….thanks). Most players entered the ace pot ($5). No aces hit, so we had a throw off and paid top four. Steve M won $80, Oliver, Matt R, and Drew M got something as well.
For the tourney, we played red nine with added A & B holes and then white nine with added A & B holes for round 1. The wind came and for the second round, we played nine holes (women and rec from red, all others from white). Ryder R won (132) rec followed by Phil A, Rick B, and Drew M. Julie M won women’s (137), followed by Lisa G (donated to the CTB….thanks), and Wanda L. In advanced, Elias G from Plainview takes the win (123), then Beard, and a tie of Cody P, John S, and Jose B. In master’s Steve M wins (128). Rob, V, and Rick L follow. Steve R and William T play in the division…first tourney ever! In open, Darren takes advantage of an old cripple and wins by one (112), followed by me, Chris L and Rocky tie, and Matt R. Who was that at the bottom? Ha.
In the tough wind, there were still a few birdies (Ryder on possibly the longest putt of the day, Steve M, Darren, Chris L, Tom Tom, Jordan, Elias, Beard, and Jose). Ryder had the only back to back birdies also (red 5 and red 6 on the long putt). Understandably in the wind there were a couple of 10’s, several 9’s, and a few snowmen. Some puts would hit chain, fall, then roll 50’ away downwind. I saw Julie nearly park an upshot only to have it roll at least 150’ away! Right to left wind on hole A lead to the most street OB. Hole B has some OB shown. Very few others had OB shown on the cards. The nine double mando from the white threw pretty much with the wind. I heard that some players attempted to layup, others took the chance and ran at it. Toby M looks to have negotiated it best. From the white he threw a 3 and a 4 (no missed mando).

Muleshoe HS Football gave a great run at state, but just fell a game short of the finals. Now that things are settled down again, it's time for disc golf in Muleshoe. There will be dirtwork started very soon to enhance the course in many areas!

Muleshoe DG course installation has started. There are about six tee pads poured. I'm hoping for a March kickoff event....but we'll see. More later.

All tee boxes are in (red and white concrete tees for every hole). Hole 4 white is elevated and looks 1,000' into the distanance (mostly with the wind). There are a few other tees that were slightly elevated out of low areas. All baskets are in! Yes, as of about 3-22-2012, the baskets were installed. At least one position on every hole has been enhanced by elevated platforms, mounds, or some other structure. Other mounds and berms will come into play on many of the basket positions. The city did an EXCELLENT job in the course enhancements. A course sign is coming very soon. There will be a possible kick-off event in April. Go to Muleshoe Disc Golf at Facebook for more up to date information. Also, a map, scorecard, etc is posted at DGCoursereview.com.
