The Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society invites club members to compete in this year’s Invitational at Moraine State Park! Handicaps have been created for players who have participated in the Moraine Monthly tournaments as well as sanctioned PDGA tournaments at contested Moraine (blue tees only).

The Invitational is open only to PFDS members. Competitors must be a current PFDS member for calendar year 2009. Not a member? It only costs $10 to join the PFDS and we will have registration forms available during the event. Membership has it's privileges!

** In addition to the handicap division, this year we will be offering a "Raw Score" contest for all divisions. Similar to the Moraine Monthly league, players register in their respective divisions (open, advanced, intermediate, recreational, novice, etc) and the top third raw scores in each division will win cash prizes. Players have the option to enter both the handicap and raw score divisions or they may choose to play in only one format. Players who choose to enter both formats will play only one round and his/her score will count toward the raw score division and the handicap division (adjusted score).

All competitors will play one round of 18 holes from the blue tees and scores will be adjusted according to each player’s handicap. Player handicaps are posted below and this information will also be posted on www.pfds.org.

This tournament will have a “flex-start” meaning players can post their round at any time Saturday or Sunday (3:00 pm cut-off for last round on Sunday). A leaderboard will be on display near hole 1 and standings will be updated after each player/group turns in their scorecard. Players must play with at least two other competitors so rounds can be witnessed, so bring a friend or two! Winners will be announced online after the tournament concludes on Sunday and arrangements will be made to distribute trophies and prizes at a later date (winners need not be present).

This tournament will occur during the Regatta at Lake Arthur. Admission is free to the festival...contests, boat races, car shows, helicopter rides, hot-air balloons, music and fireworks are just part of weekend-long festivities. The PFDS will have a tent near hole 1 and we will be promoting disc golf to park visitors. Innova, Discraft, DGA and the PDGA have provided us with various merchandise brochures which we will be distributing to park patrons. Innova & Discraft sent us several new golf discs for players to "test drive" so we will have some some skill competitions to try out new drivers, mid-range and putters!

We will have a large selection of PFDO golf discs for sale and we will also have used, loaner discs for people who want to play a round of disc golf! Over 60,000 people visited the Regatta at Lake Arthur last year and this is an excellent opportunity to inform people about our local courses and the sport in general. Come out for some fun in the sun and help us spread the word about the sport we know and love! Pack a picnic, plan to barbecue....plan to spend the day! Bring the family as there is tons of stuff to do at this free event. We can use your help promoting disc golf at Moraine State Park!


Player Handicaps for 2009 Invitational

Scores are adjusted to a "no handicap" score of 66 (par) and the last three rounds were used to determine the round averages. Players who have a round average under 66 must ADD handicap throws to their scores. The handicaps are based on a sliding percentage that starts at 80.4% and rises to 90% of the difference between the raw score and 66. If in case two or more players end up with the same adjusted score, the player with the lowest raw score wins the tie. If there's still a tie, lowest back nine score will be the tie breaker. The last tie break option is a coin flip.

I cannot believe what just happened. I was curious if I could post the spreadsheet containing all the recorded blue tee rounds at MSP. I had every blue tee round for everyone recorded since we started running monthlies and tournaments. I just now opened the spreadsheet to find out it has become "unstable". A computer wizard walked me through steps to try and recover the data, but it was unsuccessful! ARGHHHHH! Every flippin' blue tee round. That stupid spreadsheet had a lot of work in it!

Anyway, I wanted to point out that Deitzel's handicap was modified. While I did use players' last three rounds, I threw out Deitzel's 56 he scored during the May monthly. If included, the average of the past three rounds came out to 58.33% and his handicap would have calculated close to 6.4 strokes. While Deitz has been hot at Moraine this year, but his tru average is closer to 60-61.

I modified a few other players' handicaps as well. Sorry Kurt, yours is close to accurate. I'm afraid I have to admit I believe you just might be getting better.
