Default The Mars Volta won a Grammy

I never watch the Grammys because I never agree with their choices. I am a major music lover but the Grammys just don't do it for me.

So my girlfriend was reading about who won each Grammy last night, and my jaw dropped when I saw:

"Best Hard Rock Performance: The Mars Volta (Wax Simulacra)"

They're not exactly a band that everybody "appreciates" but they're all EXTREMELY talented. I'm just glad their talent was recognized.

In my opinion, Wax Simulacra was the weakest song from The Bedlam in Goliath, but it's also the only one that's less than 10ish minutes long, so it was the only single they could put out from the album. If I had to pick the best song on the album it would be Goliath.

Their guitar player (Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez) composes all of the music for every instrument in the band. When they play live they do about 50% improv in each song and Omar conducts the whole band.

The Mars Volta are my second favorite band and I'm slightly obsessed with them (when Bedlam in Goliath came out, I didn't take it out of my CD player for six months and listened to it about three times a day every day) so I might have to change my opinion of the Grammys. Especially since Radiohead and Robert Plant won awards too

They remind me a little of Coheed and Cambria. I'm on the "not my style, but I can appreciate their talent" boat.

Metallica and Tool are similar for me in that regard. Not my cup of tea, but I recognize them for absolutely *brilliant* musicianship.

So you think C&C are derivative of the Mars Volta? FYI, a little research shows that both bands came into existence at about the same time. (2001)
