Is it me or is this years USDGC rocs going to confuse everyone? I'm pretty sure that the general consensus was that the special blend is the STAR plastic. But this years USDGC rocs list special blend for some stamps and STAR for others. Add this from the zonedriven site:
Quote:
Special Blend Rocs should also prove popular as this is quite likely the final run of Special Blend discs. These, like the Star Rocs, are pretty straight flyers.
Last year for the special blend? That really makes it sound like special blend is different than STAR. Is this just a mix up on zonedrivens part or what?

Dave, was it always intentional that the San Marino, Ontario, and Rancho Roc molds were different or was this just an artifact of the mold-making process?

And also, was there ever an issue made about having separate PDGA approval for discs from each different mold?
The San Marino and Ontario molds were the same except for the engraving. There was a difference in appearance and flight due to the molding and materials. With the Ontario version, we went through a period of time where we couldn't get the original plastic we used as it had been discontinued, and we couldn't find a substitute for a couple of years. It was pretty frustrating dealing with plastics salesmen that couldn't answer a simple question. It was a woman, (the only woman plastics agent I can remember), who knew the answer. We found the plastic, and were able to rum good Rocs again. To ensure we would not be in that situation again, we created the Rancho, which can run on anything.
It was intentional to make the Rancho Roc more like the Original San Marino. Over the years the Ontario version/stage became less and less stable and more like a Shark. The Rancho was tooled to address this problem. If we renamed the Roc something like Cro, there would be an issue. Different is also relative. Roc fans can certainly tell the minute differences in tooling, but even with the tooling changes, it would be difficult to tell some of the original San Marinos from some of the Rocs we are making now.

Special Blend is Star, but Special Blend was done a year or more ago. As plastics change from batch to batch sometimes, it's sometimes helpful to denote the vintage, so to speak. The first run of Special Blend Rocs were
slightly different from the second. The Star Rocs are slightly different from the two SB Rocs. The first SB version was in a Ontario configuration. The second SB version, was semi Ontario. The Stars are in Rancho. What you can expect from the flight is another matter. This, you can get from the USDGC site, but generally all of the SB and Stars, are straighter flying than their Champion counterparts, I am told.

My posse was pretty upset when I read that other partners have been ordering rocs for 3 days before I "stumbled" across the info buried deep in the zonedriven site.
Weren't they supposed to contact the partner package people before the time they could start to order? That's what we were all told? I"m confused...

DX. But between Star and SB; no difference for me. I like both better than Champion.

It's too bad they chose to immortalize hole 7 at the Winthrop University course, with its heinous artificiality. I can think of many other holes at that course more worthy.

Hey Dave, are you planning on running big bead Star Aviars and if so how far out do you think they are? If they mold up without feeling too bulky/domey that could be one sweet approach disc or putter. thanks

did you send in an entry for the design contest? Which hole would you like to see on next year's Roc?
Maybe 18 years hence, we could have a Roc for every hole

Our original plans were to issue both the putter star and driver star aviars. After we made the putter star, it seemed superfluous as the putter star flies true at high and low speeds. We may make the driver version in the future, but it is on hold for now.

The DX version was the first to be produced. It was made with the putter mold. When the KC and JK came out, we made a driver mold to mate with the big bead. The big bead in DX became the Aviar Driver. This model was later replaced by the Classic Aviar with small bead. The Pro Aviar came next and is one of three existing inventory versions. The Pro version will be replaced at some point.

Hey Dave

I have a small request to ask you. I have been looking for overstable midrange disc for long time. Innova does not have one, and I ended up brought Drone and it helped with my certain situation shots. All in my bags are Innovas and I am feeling like a traitor. Please make overstable midrange disc for all Innova fans!

a small request

I had the same problem, so I switched to a ch. gator. This disc doesn't go quite as far as the drone, but it works perfect for me.

We have several discs that might fit the bill. Most of the discs named are not that overstable. The Whippet would be most overstable with good range, next the Viper, then the Banshee. These used to be drivers, but may suffice as mid to fairway now. And there is always the Ram. Of these, my guess is the Banshee is the closest to the characterist with a little more speed.
