Stork passed on this list of SI articles on disc over the years:
The SI Vault is an amazing resource. Over the years, I've collected all the SI mentions of disc sports. Have to check the vault to see what I'm missing. Lemme know if anyone finds something I've missed. Sports Illustrated Discography 1957-present (rev. 7/28/08) Faces in the Crowd 12/4/72- Dan Roddick- MVP First college ultimate game (Rutgers over Princeton) 9/27/76- Monika Lou and Peter Bloeme- 1976 Overall Champions in Rose Bowl 6/5/78- Tita Ugalde- Winner of Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Frisbee Championship 6/29/81- Van Miller- World distance record 12/28/81-1/4/82- Belmond (Labrador) - Catch and Fetch Champion 9/5/88- Wende Coates and Jim Herrick- Overall champions at US Open 10/24/88- Sam Ferrans- World distance record at US Open (623 feet, 7 inches) ?/?/91- Ron Ellis and Maggie (Border Collie) - Come 'N get It World Canine Champions 10/21/91 - Amy Bekken and Snapper Pierson - WFDF Overall Champions 1/18/93- Ken Dobyns- MVP National Ultimate Championship (NY over Boston) ?/?/93- Aimee Reiner- Girl's winner at World Jr. Frisbee Championship 8/18/97- Tiina Booth- (Coach of Amherst Regional HS)- Pelham High School Ultimate wins state championship over Newton North High 6/29/98- Brian Harriford- Callahan winner (LSU Ultimate) 10/7/02- Scott Burnett- US Amateur Disc Golf Champion in Milford, MI 9/27/04- Will Neff- MVP of US Juniors team at World Ultimate Championship in Finland. 7/4/05- Josh Ziperstein- Callahan winner (Brown Ultimate) 7/11&18/05- Cyndi Birch (her “faces” part of 25 year retrospective) There have also been a number of articles on disc sports: -"Flying Frisbees" Events & Discoveries, Page 22.(5/13/57) - "Frisbee: Ohio Version." 19th Hole, Readers Take Over (Letters), Pages 78-79. (5/27/57) - Flint, Frank P. "Frisbee: Manners And Morals, Letters, Page 79. (6/3/57) - IT'S BEER, BRATWURST AND A GUTS GAME - Joe Jares, pages 48 & 49 (8/3/70). - What appears to be an ad from Wham-O offers an opportunity to “Be a Frisbee Immortal” by sending a Frisbee claim to fame to the IFA. (5/8/72) - THEY ARE MY LIFE AND MY WIFE - J. D. Reed, pages 62-72A major feature on John Kirkland and Victor Malafronte when they toured with the Globetrotters (2/24/75) - There were several letters to the editor published following the John and Victor story. An outraged letter to the editor protested the entire idea of disc sports. It seems that the writer had been spending a lot of time practicing “real sports” and was appalled to see the space wasted on Frisbee. Also in that section was a from Irv Kalb, noting the rapid growth of collegiate ultimate and a letter from David J. Cowen, recounting his Wham-O Frisbee demonstrations in 1964 and 1965. (3/7/75?) - FOOTLOOSE - Stephanie Salter, page 10 & 12 (6/14/76) - A US Open at La Mirada, “No Romp in the Park” by Ann Killion (9/21/87) - On the Scene- The World Disc Championship in Santa Cruz by Austin Murphy (10/21/85) - The demise of Ashley Whippet by N. Morrison) by Mark Danna (5/11/87) - National Ultimate Championships by John Bowerman (5/8/89) - An article on disc golf (6/14/93). - A "To Our Readers" editor's note featuring Andy Borinstein (12/4/95) - A comedy piece on "trash sports" in the Olympics that mentions Frisbee (and Hacky Sack) by Jeff MacGregor. There's a show currently in rotation on PBS stations called: Adventure Lodges of North America. The 2-minute DG segment starts about 24 minutes into the show at the Camelot Lodge in Utah. The Course was designed by Jon Lyksett. There was an article on this place in DGWN a while back that showed Juliana and Shawn visiting it. Check your local PBS listings.

Alright, personally I think this is one of the very best articles about disc golf that I have seen written by a reporter for a newspaper, ever.
The reporter joins four guys on a round of disc golf and starts the article by talking about her quirky college friend who played Ultimate. The closing line of the article is: "With all due respect to my roommate, this is the ultimate." |

I enjoy this precursor to the closing line:
"After three-plus hours spent traversing slopes in the shadow of Sam’s Knob, I catch the bug — and what appears to be poison oak." |

wow... did anyone read the comments on the boTTom of that article?
2. Last summer I won approximately $2000-2250 playing "frisbee" during competitive sanctioned events all across New England. This was my "second" "job" besides my career doing environmental planning... 3. The leading money winner last year, playing just "frisbee", was "Schweby" Or Brian Schweberger, you MIGHT have seen him on Conan O'Brien, but maybe you didn't, that's neither here nor there, he's on track to make around 50-60K this year, just playing "frisbee". apparently TThe Pro did beTTer than i thought last year, and he didnt he let us know he was going on conan... |

This is a great thread, and we thought the sport needed an updated page with all of this information in one place. Combining these links with links from other sites, we've developed a page on our site called "National News," where you can view all of these links from 2008 in one easy list, rather than searching through threads all over the place.
View the page at: http://www.1000rated.com/?page_id=100 Enjoy! Brian www.1000rated.com |

great article about a course in North Hampton, CT
http://www.valleyadvocate.com/article.cfm?aid=8254 authors description of a basket... Dotted throughout woods and fields on the north side of Burt's Pit Road are 18 curious-looking baskets. Each basket is elevated around a metal pole that stands about five feet tall. Chains extend from the center of the basket to a wide ring at the top of the pole to form a triangular shape, resembling a torso. When one writer for the Advocate first saw the baskets years ago, he thought they might be feeders, maybe for deer or the many other critters who call the land home. And like most of the parcel's wildlife, the baskets are almost invisible unless you look closely, because many are set strategically behind hummocks, near streams and on the edges of gullies off the beaten running and walking paths. They can barely be seen from a short distance and are not obtrusive to their surroundings; coming across one is like seeing a tiny sentry in repose at his post. |

Midwest flodding, what a problem! I was just watching CNN and saw a house in Indiana which was flooded out. The thing that caught my eye was the disc golf basket sitting in the yard surrounded by water. I wish the best to any and all disc golfers both in the midwest and texas.
