Here is a good interview that was aired this morning at 6am. It was a remote interview between Wayne Forest and a local media personality. I thought it was pretty cool.

Check it out: Link to ice bowl interview

They've got lots of extra copies of this first FDM issue so collectors might want to snag some from Breiner even if they opted out.

And that first issue is imminent. We are currently working on the website and switching hosts, so the FDM site is down at the moment. Perfect timing, eh? Ah well, it'll be pretty cool once it's going.

And while we did print a good number of copies, most are earmarked for specific deliveries. If you want em' as collectibles I suggest getting them earlier than later.

Default Disc Golf in the News

The following article, which includes some very positive coverage of disc golf, appeared in the February 2008 issue of Sports Events Magazine:

"Sports to Watch - Alternative Sports Go Mainstream"

The print article also featured a nice photo of Matt Peckham throwing a shot at the USDGC and a very nice half page ad, with photos, for the International Disc Golf Center which was paid for by the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Enjoy!

Nicely written and quite informative. I've read so many "gee whiz what's frisbee golf?" articles by Interns its nice to read a thoughtful piece with an interesting perspective. I only poked around a bit on the site, but this looks to be a nice resource worth looking into in more detail.

Partnership boosts sport's growth

By Betsy Gilliland| Staff Writer
Monday, April 07, 2008

Not everyone in town this week has a clubhouse badge for the Augusta National Golf Club.

No worries, though.

Brian Graham, the executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, is extending an open invitation to one and all to visit the PDGA-managed International Disc Golf Center in Columbia County's Wildwood Park.

The facility includes a clubhouse, pro shop, Headrick Memorial Museum, Disc Golf Hall of Fame, several practice holes and two disc golf courses. A third course is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

"This is an international destination for people in our sport. We're one of the fastest growing sports in the world right now," Mr. Graham said.

The facility is the product of a public-private partnership between Columbia County and the PDGA.

The PDGA was looking for a competition complex and a means to consolidate resources to promote growth, Mr. Graham said. The county wanted to increase traffic in Wildwood Park and to boost the local economy, he said.

Mr. Graham said the PDGA will hold 15 events at the facility this year. The center also has a tournament, which is open to amateurs and professionals, on the first Saturday of every month.

The executive director said "loaner" discs are available for people who want to try the sport.

"We have a lot of traditional golfers who take up disc golf, and they're amazed at the similarity," Mr. Graham said.

The rules, terminology, etiquette and strategy in disc and "ball" golf are the same.

However, Mr. Graham said, disc golf is less expensive, less time consuming and "has a smaller learning curve" than the conventional variety.

"For the most part, it is just a fun game. It is just a great walk in the park," he said.

For more information about the facility, call (706) 261-6342.

Reach Betsy Gilliland at (706) 868-1222, ext. 113, or betsy.gilliland@augu

DID YOU KNOW?

- Wildwood Park's International Disc Golf Center, which is managed by the Professional Disc Golf Association, was christened with a Frisbee that contained the ashes of Ed Headrick, the PDGA founder and inventor of the modern Frisbee and disc golf's Pole Hole.

- Frisbees were invented by Yale University students in 1920. The students tossed tin pie plates from Frisbie Pie Company, calling out "Frisbie" to warn passersby. The spelling was changed when Wham-O Inc. began mass producing the saucers in 1957.

- There are seven disc golf courses at six locations in the Augusta area -- Pendleton King and Lake Olmstead parks in Augusta, Riverview Park and the Hippodrome in North Augusta, and Patriots and Wildwood parks in Columbia County. There is a charge of $3 for county residents or $5 for nonresidents for unlimited play at the two Wildwood Park courses.

Dont know if someone already posted it but disc golf made it in the April Cosmopolitan mag. Page 256 under "Your Hottest Love Matches"

" The Lion (Leo) is outdoorsy, so challenge him to a disc golf game, and show off your gams in a pair of cute shorts. He will be hooked by your take charge attitude."

They must have met some real disc golf chicks. hahahaha take charge attitude.

ya'll knew what i meant... nothing is cool about it... just interesting and kinda good to see that none of them were PDGA members. Does it matter?... not really since they still carry the name 'disc golfer' in the press in a very bad way.

Even if they were PDGA members, externally it doesn't matter unless the people are named as PDGA members.

And people wonder why I ask people to empty beer out at parks and leave parks when they are doing things like this.......

Drinking is not illegal in all parks.
If this incident involved just drinking, it would be a double standard. Most golf courses allow drinking and cute chicks will even bring alcohol to you on the course. Drugs are another issue.
Typically, the substance being consumed is not the issue, its the people using them. If you are smoking pot in the parking lot or selling cocaine, you deserve to be arrested, disc golfer or not.
