I always thought the Predator was lock for D plastic. It could be the competitor to the much beloved DX Teebird.

First of all, what exactly do you mean by a bead? Rocs have beads, Aviars have beads, but a Predator? I take it you are referring to the increasingly sharper concavity towards the bottom of the wing. Anyway, this is not the only difference b/w the Pred and Avenger. Look at the wing and notice that before the bottom of the Pred wing gets concave, the outside part of the wing is almost convex. This somehow gives the Pred stability and speed because the first runs (original Pred mold) were different (straight rather than convex front wing). I think that the Predator is faster and has more carry than the Avenger because of the convex front part of the wing. The Predator also gets what I would refer to as lift or an air-bounce right out of the hand, that an Avenger does not. Switching a year or so ago from the Firebird to the Pred I really had to adjust to that lift. On a sad note, I lost my 1.4 years seasoned Pred last night...

About the Flash and Surge: The Flash is a truer flyer, but the Surge is more HSS. They are both versatile depending on your armspeed.
Great post! I found the same lift on the Pred, especially if thrown hyser into the wind. The point is if I can use one mold in place of two I will. I actually have plenty of Avengers, I just noticed that the Avengers I like have flights nearly identical to some of the Preds I have, and Pred will never let you down, where the Avenger will sometimes catch a gust of wind and lose the line. I do have some pig Avengers that are basically indistinguishable from my Preds for the most part.

As far as the Flash. I have a max weight yellow Z that is very overstable and can be flattened from a hyser into a headwind and not flip and will fade skip like mad. It is kind of like like a Crush. I use the ESP Flash for most of my "normal" straight work that used to be the flippier Avengers, but the Flash is so much longer you can throw it so smooth and it just goes. Mine are domey and are all tuned to the same stability, they do not flip unless I want them to flip. Many of the ESP are flip out of the box, but a little tuning solves that. If I had to live with the stabilities of the fast drivers as delivered, I would go crazy. Luckily, ESP tunes so well, and tunes permanently.

I think the Flash is faster and more predictable than the Surge when tuned to the proper stability. I have definitely thrown the Flash further than the Surge.

The Breeze debuted around 2003 I believe...as a result of the demand for a premium plastic mid that was flippy out of the box (Breeze was first). Now with new plastics that break in slow, but still break in you can have an understable version of your stable mid in good plastic. Also, the meteor is a more versatile mold that is somewhat understable out of the box.

The Buzz GT came out in '05 I believe (at least mass production).

I think the only reason the Surge had so much fanfair at its release as being so predictable as well as long, was that it was released in ESP plastic and not Z plastic like the Flash. The Z plastic has tendency to make very flat distance discs that are fast and long but have lots of fade and HS turn when hit with the wind and do not earn the reputation of being "predictable"(like the first run flat Star Wraiths compared to the new 12x Wraiths that are real domey).

The Z Flash is flat as a pancake compared to the ESP. The ESP molds more like X and makes a nice domy distance disc that has lots of speed predictability and a much straighter flight and glides for days at the end of the flight.

D pred . .. .I love anything in a predator and doubt that I would even try it. Never met a driver in the D plastic that made any sense.

Light Z pred would be nice for me but the vast majority of predator throwers only want them heavy. When I have new predators to re-sell all the 175's sell easily and the lighter ones just sit around.

Merge with Gateway?

Wasn't that Quest?

I think all you are seeing is that Discraft is eliminating the midgrade plastics because they realize that people will pay more for the premium.

If ANY disc were to be made in D it would be the Predator. It is so stable that it could afford to be beat in...

It's all about logistics and warehouse space. I've been to the factory. One wall of Ultrastars does more business than the rest of the warehouse filled with golf discs. And there are full stacks of shelves filled with discs that have probably been there for years, Rattler anyone? It seems like they're just clearing, and not making any more of the stuff that just sits. I'd personally like to see every disc in every plastic, but it just ain't gonna happen.

However...
Bring back the Photon Wasp!!!! Some of the other Photon discs may not have sold well, but it seems that all these are long gone. Best grip on a D Wasp since the first runs. Those X's are sweet too. Luckily they are so beefy I should have enough for a few more years. (Ever notice that the early white ones glow a little bit?)

Actually, I still never understood why the D Predator isn't a mainstay for the D line. It would be perfect. A typically overstable disc in Premo plastic would beat to straight in D and have a lot of longevity.

Not to mention it would be perfect for flexing Big D in the desert.

My guess is that D will be relagated to "beginner" discs.

The last ace race dice - IMPACT - was much better, much easier to control and i loved that it held the high speed turn and faded ZERO.

Have no factory productions been made of the Impact? I haven't seen a factory logo. All I have is my Ace Race disc, marked up in sharpie with 4 aces on the back.

Can you hit up Discraft for some insider info about a new high speed stable driver? I heard rumbling back last fall. I'm thinking Surge in a 1.9 or 2.0 with a wider, fast, and heavy rim.

Let's get back on subject of that FLX Drone too.
