Is it hard for you guys to find heavy Challengers?

I made the switch from the Manget a couple of weeks ago and I have looked high and low down here trying to find some Challengers that are at least 174g. I got like 5 from Sunking, all marked 173-174. They all weigh 172 or 173. I went to the Clearwater disc golf store and thought I was set since I found like 15 marked 173-174. Out of the whole stack only 1 was 174 and all the rest were again 172-173. I weighed them on 2 different scales just to be sure. Is this a coincidence or are heavy Challengers really this hard to track down...

John or anyone else...do you have any heavy Challengers that are either stiff soft ones or pro Ds? Thanks as always.
You might want to keep in mind that the legal max weight for a Challenger is 174.3 grams. Maybe Discraft is trying to make sure they are PDGA-legal? If memory serves, wasn't there a brou-ha-ha just a short while ago on these forums about illegal overweight discs?!?

nanook
Where did you get that number? Not that I don't believe it, but that would mean that the Challenger is smaller in diameter than the Aviar and that would be both surprising and interesting. I was assuming the max weight would be 175g, but that Discraft doesn't mark them any higher than 174. Just like the Buzzz is legal to 180 like a Roc, but Discraft doesn't mark them over 178. BTW, I'm not looking for a heavy one to putt with so much, but to throw off the tee.

i heard that every company makes discs targeted at max weight and inevitably some are over the legal weight. in turn, discraft has mad a concerted effort to target just below the legal weight so that some of those do hit legal numbers but very few are over.

i am by no means a factory worker or involved in the process, just what i heard.
I don't know that this is true for sure, but my observations over the past few years certainly support that notion. I also have a theory that a lot of the best discs in heavy weights don't make it out of Michigan as they are scooped up by eager insiders...

I use to throw only Discraft. Still throw alot of it. The 1st run Force was a disappointment to me, so I am leary of the 2nd run. I lost a 1st run in a local pond and didn't even care. Are these 2nd runs worth a try or just stick with a Flash?
If you didn't like the first run the second run is not much different overall. You probably do just want to stick with the Flash. Many Flashes are the most overstable distance driver most throwers need. I think the Force is only a benefit to players who throw golf shots in the 450' range, throw strong forehands, or as a wind fighting disc.

The info is on the Approved discs spreadsheet (found on the Rules page). The Aviar is .2cm larger in diameter than the Challenger.

krupicka is correct; I got it off the "Approved Discs and Targets" pdf. I got to it from the "Rules" page.

http://www.pdga.com/documents/tech_s...nd_targets.pdf

Sorry I didn't link to it in the earlier post, but I was in a hurry. I have 5 or 6 cryztal challengers and only one of them is between 174.0 and 174.3 grams. All the rest are 172-174, just like the stamp on them claims.

Default APX vs Magnet/Challenger

So what's the difference between the APX and the Manget and challenger. I've used both challengers and magnets, and will probably never use the Banger GT because I don't like the Groove Top feel, but I've never thrown or known anyone who has thrown the APX. Any fans?

The man who owns this thread could be one of their biggest fans but they don't make the swirls anymore so you might as well stick with the Challengers/Mags.

I know a lot of big fans of the APX. It is probably the straightest flying putter out there. I never liked it because it has a high profile like a domey Aviar, but the way it flies through the air makes me wish it felt good in my hand. You have to beat the soul out of a Challenger to get it to hold lines like the APX.

The Magnet is like an overstable version of the APX. It has a high profile as well. It has really good carry and glide and it gets good lift for a putter. I putted with soft magnets with quite a bit of success, but I now putt with the Challenger because I did not like the high profile and I could not get a clean release when I had to throw it more than a putt.

The Challenger is flat, wind resistant, and too overstable to putt with outside of 30' when new. It drives like a dream--good speed, holds lines perfectly, and doesn't get too "floaty".

Aren't all Challengers beadless? That is why I moved to Magnets because I have been using Big beaded putters for years.

I have not bought a new Challenger in years but the stack of Cam Todd's I have and the UV 2003 Am World Soft Challengers I use all have beads like a BB Aviar.

Just went and looked and though I see what you are talking about I would call it a Small bead at best. It isn't nearly as big as a Wizard or Kc Aviar's bead/

Exactly, I can't stand putting with any type of bead on the bottom of my putters...which is why I am a huge advocate of the Magnet, chain seeking device beetches!!!

You misunderstood me Conners. I went to the Magnet because it feels more like a big beaded putter than the Challenger because of the wing design and the fact it has a BIG bead.

this is why I carry a Warlock AND a Wizard.
Chalky Black Warlcock - No bead flat flyer for everyday putting
Medium Wizard - stable beaded monster for those not so straight/windy putts and approaches.
PERFECT COMBO

I do know one thing though, those new soft challengers are some of the nicest feeling plastic I've ever seen in a putter. If I wasnt so hooked on the Gateway dynamic duo it would be the putter I throw.

10-4 big fella. I don't see how a magnet could feel like a big bead (?). But to each their own. I like how well the magnet floats in the air, it's also a great anhyzer putter.

I'll let you know in a day or two when I throw the ones I got. I have yellow, green, and blue. One thing I do know is that they are less stable than their Z counterparts.

Not the first/early run that I threw. It was much more stable, like a pred almost.

I love the Z but the one thing that bugged me about the ESP os that they turned a bit at high speed while the Z will just hold straight. Anyway I will see for sure tomorrow.

I never have had much luck with Avengers. Just like the Tracker, I have tried them again and again. I just find them to be slower and have less glide than the Predator. I'm still hooked on old Tsunamis, but they don't make that plastic anymore so I may have to learn the Avenger down the road.

Default Meteor Vs. Beat Buzzz

I've been throwing Buzzzes for years. While they do break in nicely, they don't break in much (at least not in the plastics I prefer). The last time I lost my flippy one I ended up taking a new ESP Buzzz and bending the bejeezus out of it trying to get it flippy. This worked for the round, but after 2-3 days the stability had come back.

Last night I took a Meteor out that I had lying around and it flew much like a beat up Buzzz. It may have even glided a little better. I was surprised to say the least and I'm considering giving it a spot in my bag at least until I get a Buzzz legitimately seasoned. Any opinions on the Meteor?
