soft drink. thats what we called them in PA. coke was sometimes used generically as well.

btw... lived in Colorado and moved to upstate NY when I was 5... called it Pop before every kid corrected me in the kindergarten and quickly learned to call it 'soda'... now anything different sounds silly to me (even though by the map I live in a mixed up state... NC)

This is a pretty cool map. Finally, something useful from academia.

You can see all the yankees who moved to south florida to sip on sadas on the beach. Also, what is up with that yankee circle in eastern missou and southern illinois?

When I used to visit this area of E Tennessee as a kid the term was 'a dope' or 'bottle of dope'. And they were not talking about 'shine', which was also available.

Waiter approaches a table ,
" could I interest you in something to drink ? "

Patron

" I would like a coke ! "

Waiter replies

" what kind ? "

Patron

" Dr. Pepper would do just fine ! "
