Getting closer! I've got a lot of fun and good times lined up for this year! $15.00 to play the main round (extra charges to play the other fun games all during the day) and everyone gets a free ICE BOWL mini marker disc, a free raffle ticket, and free dinner of burgers and hot dogs. Last year our food provider surprised us by bring FAJITAS!!! You just never know what kind of fun will happen here. The main 18 hole round will start at 2:30, but there will be games to play all day starting with the ICE BOWL SHORT GAME at 10:00. We'll have a raffle after the food is served, so plan on buying lots of tickets, you might just win a free basket or a Champion Destroyer. Thanks to Disc Golf U and PIZZA HUT for thier donations!
Come join us a day early and play the course we are going to use for this year's DisCrazy Shootout. Help us help the HIGH PLAINS FOOD BANK! |

Yes! All we need now is to continue our "NICE BOWL" weather streak. We've had several in a row with beautiful weather, I hope it is again this year.
Who's getting that BASKET? |

Putting the tape measure to the course today shows some pretty big numbers for length. *Approximately 10,401 for total length. (* = we haven't measured #13 & #14 yet but I'm guessing 600+/-, and 900+/, respectively)
"The Horseshoe" is going to be very tough. A 3 hole stretch (#12, #13, and #14) going around the North Lake that's gonna measure somewhere around 2,500 feet. 2 par 5's and a par 4, with lots of water lurking close by. Front Nine = 4,869 feet (average of 541 feet per hole) Back Nine = 5,532 feet (average of 614 per hole) Shortest holes: Front - #8...225 feet (first 150 feet over water) Back - #17...240 feet (Sloping down to the water behind the basket) Longest holes: Front - #4...966 feet (uphill most of the way) Back - #12...1,030 feet (water all along the left) |

Nasty weather so far this morning, I may not be able to do any more measuring if the snow piles up. Only 2 holes left to measure, it's looking like there will be some long rounds
Not too much water in play on the front 9, but the back 9 will make up for it. |

New lengths & averages: Front 9 - 4,869 feet (541 ft. avg.) Back 9 - 5,421 feet (602 ft. avg.) Total 18 - 10,290 feet (572 ft. avg.) |

The Short Game course is ready! 9 holes of Short Game fun! 2 times around ought to give us a clear CHAMPION!
What is "The Short Game"? It's a game I/we invented to work on the putting and approach aspects of the game of Disc Golf. The course is set up with short holes (anywhere between 100 and 175 feet long), and each player uses only 2 discs. Most players choose putters, but you can use any 2 discs. Players must use only thier 2 discs, and may not switch out other discs during the round, so choose wisely. Each player must also carry a mini marker disc. Players throw from the marked tee areas, throwing both of thier discs. After all players in the group throw thier discs, each player then marks the WORST shot of thier 2 throws (the rest of the group may be called to determine which of the 2 is worst, but it's usually pretty obvious). Then each player throws both of thier discs again from that lie, marking the worst of the 2 again, until they get both discs in the basket. There is a 4 throw limit on each hole (to speed up play, since this is a SHORT game). Each time a player throws 2 discs from a tee area or lie, that counts as ONE throw, and you add all your "throws" at the end to determine the winner. The ideal round would be all 2's (since an ACE with both discs is rare), but a 36 will be a difficult score to attain. There are several opportunities to place side bets, with CTP's, bonus CTP's, and the regular 51/50 for the tee shots. Any questions? If I remember correctly, the last SHORT GAME tournament we did at an ICE BOWL was won by Cruz Rangel from Lubbock, but that was 5 or 6 years ago. |

Well, guess who's got the 2008 ICE BOWL SHORT GAME trophy?
Matt Smart! Shooting a 40 was 7 throws better than anyone else, so now he has 2 Short Game trophies on his wall! The wind was blowing around medium speed, and the chill never quite wore off, but we had 25 players show up for the SHORT GAME. Big fun! Cool short course, and pizza for lunch (they even brought it out to the course for us!! Thanks PIZZA HUT!!) |

Another "NICE BOWL"!!! Very good weather, a little windy, but not too bad. 64 players signed up to play, many others hanging around watching and partaking in good food, beer, and sodas. I believe we hit our cash goal of $2,000.00, but we may be a little short on the pounds of food (I'm guessing somewhere around 600 or 700 pounds). I'll get it weighed at the HIGH PLAINS FOOD BANK later today.
Another good ICE BOWL year for the TEXAS PANHANDLE FLYING DISC ASSOCIATION!! Thanks everyone! |

Very nice! Impresive $'s and #'s. I again had plans to make it as I had some work up that way and I could have tied things in very nicely. But a hot prospect in Farmington became the critical issue...so my girlfriend and I did a three day ski weekend instead (Durango, Wolf). I'm so busy now that I don't know if I'll remember how to throw a Frisbee (I mean disc).
Send a flyer for the next event and I'll get it in our course signs.

Very good feedback coming in about the SHORT GAME! Seems like it was a bigger hit than I imagined. Maybe next year we can set up 18 baskets and do 2 rounds for a 36 hole championship.
It's a very fun game (even with the chilly wind ), and it doesn't take a lot of equipment. I've got to find a way to get all the work done earlier so I can play in next year's SHORT GAME CHAMPIONSHIP!! I'm gunning for your trophy next year, Matt!

On the theme of area Ice Bowls, Abilene raised $1,400 and 126 lbs. of food. This area of the state stepped it up again!

Good work! How many showed up and what was the weather like?
With the lay-out at Cal Young Park, you could probably set up a pretty cool SHORT GAME and get a little extra cash out of everyone to add to the donation. We were able to add $100.00 just from the SHORT GAME in the morning (actually it was $130.00 because Pat A. donated all of his prize money that he won). Also (I forgot to add this part), we raised $250.00 from the day before when we played the big course on the other side of the park. Thanks Matt and everyone who helped with that project! |

Thanks Rock. Overall the ice Bowl was a huge success! You put alot of work into it every year and it really pays off. Thanks!
What are the chances of becoming a 3 time Short Game Champion! Looking forward to next year! Maybe we can get together and set up a Short Game Fundraiser for the Shootout.

![]() Maybe Palo Duro Canyon? I don't remember ever tossing a disc into the Red River! I was out there about 2 weeks ago, and I talked to one of the Rangers about group rates. She seemed like it would OK, but we would need to get the OK from the head Ranger (who wasn't there that day). The Mesquite Campground (the farthest from the entrance) would be a pretty good location, especially if anyone wanted to camp overnight. Also, if we can get enough interest, the Cow Camp Cabins would be a really cool site, but it would be best if we got enough players to rent all 4 of the cabins (since golfers tend to get a little rowdy and loud ). The main drawback about PDC is the no beer thing.Quote:

Our mild winter weather has gotten a lot less mild! Ice and possibly snow for today's round. Don't let that stop you, though. Ace Pot starts somewhere around $40.00 if I remember correctly.

We had 46 people show. Weather was fantastic. 70, sunny and just a little breezy. We did unlimited mulligans for both rounds and raised $640 on mulligans alone.
SHORT GAME action would be cool. I was thinking we might do something different for next year. We will see. Thats the last thing on my mind right now...getting our Park Expansion Series off the ground is #1!! (Can you say...2 courses at Cal Young?!)

There is a new website up for Abilene Disc Golf. Click on the link in my signature to get the scoop on the disc golf scene in Abilene. (hey, that rhymes :-)
The regional course info page is the same one that goes out with Chains of the Plains. I know there are several updates that need to be made, if you see one let me know. Also, there are sponsorship opportunities for the new Park expansion project. NO obligations, just an FYI if anyone is interested. |

The Woodman Spring Fling is just around the corner. April 12 - 2 rounds - NO OB - lunch provided - low entry fee.
I think Jess is capping the event at 60 and probably already has half the spots filled with Woodman members...so talk to Jess soon to make sure you dont get left out. Hes going to have the same great items to raffle off and big players packs. Look for the Woodman thread on the PDGA tournament section for details. |

I want challenge the clubs of Texas. Texas Women’s Championships is April 26 & 27 and we want to present the opportunity to highlight your club during the TWC. We started the girly station experience and we want the clubs of Texas to improve on that idea.
Last year was a very successful experience for the ladies and the girly station was a big part of that. Consider representing your club by having the best girly station. We have designated areas to best serve the ladies. Contact Ed Coffey or me and we will ensure a place in the action. And of course we will accept any form of sponsorship. So if you cannot be involved in a girly station, then make sure to support the event with sponsorship, escorts or my favorite CASH. Behind every man is a lady, so don’t miss the opportunity to back a lady. I will be the first to recognize support and the first to point out lack of involvement. SEND ME YOUR LADIES!

Allright! I'm back on! It was a tough choice but I decided to provide food and clothes for the family until I could scrape up enough to renew my PRO ($75.00!!! ) membership without sending us to the poor house. It was a very difficult fall and winter for my business so I had to forgo the ACE club membership this time. I'm sure the PDGA will survive without my little extra donation. Maybe some other time.
****, 20 years as a paying member. Hard to believe. What is there to show for all that time, effort, and money? I don't know, but I forgot what I was going to post here so I'll try later.

Anyone coming in town today for the Shootout, we'll be doing our regular Thursday Handicap round from the BLUE TEES this afternoon at 6:00. Anyone can play regardless if you don't have an established handicap. $2.00 entry / $1.00 ACE POT (it starts somewhere around $140.00). It'll be a good chance to check out the BLUE TEES on the Disc Creek course.
