Default WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP TO TRY TO START A NCAA DISC GOLF TEAM?

I was just wondering what would best way to present this to a school. If there were any official paperwork from the pdga. I graduated from the Univesity of Arkansas, and some of the guys want to try to promote the sport that way, disc golfers that is. Any advice would be helpful.

Dan Stork Roddick, PDGA Director of Special Projects, has been working on this. His e-mail is cyberstork@earthling.net

I think it was last year 2003, there (ok 2 yrs) was an article about NCAA championships in NC, it was in DGWN. Check with that for starters and see what other schools do this.

NCAA doesn't sponsor disc golf. Stork (Dan Roddick) is working on getting collegiate disc golf going on a national basis. You can contact him at cyberstork@earthlink.net I think probably this will be done not as a varsity sport through NCAA, but more likely as a club sport at first, and possibly through ACUI (Association of College Unions International). Email Stork, he may have some more insight.

Hopefully he can get it nationally in the next 2.5 years before I graduate.

Thanks a lot for all the information, and keep it coming guys. If a few disc golfers try to do this around their local College things might go a lot faster.

I think this idea is gaining steam. I am a staff member at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Students started a DG club last year and I am serving as their staff advisor. Laura Clark at WKU (Western Kentucky University) has been instrumental in getting collegiate competitions initiated. A message that I received from her a while back was sent to individuals at Vanderbilt, Univ. of Iowa, Univ. of Illinois, as well as several schools in Ohio, and Kentucky. I know that the collegiate disc golf championships (as seen in the DGWN) is scheduled again for this spring.

I would agree that the first step is at the club sport level. Ultimate has been established at many universities that compete at National-level events, yet I don't think it is actually a NCAA sport yet.

mtl has done a great job with the dg club at East Carolina University...there are several local colleges with some sort of dg club in north carolina.....the interest is there now its just getting massive interest in the sport....get innova to talk with schools about promotions to start clubs....anyway possible to help....but the best way is for any student at a university to speak with the head of intermurral sports and start there...thats how we did it here in greenville....and it just keeps on going...good luck to all....when i go back to school you can bet ill be in or running the disc golf club at my school

NC State has a club, but most of the better (advanced-level) DGers don't participate. It's mostly rec level players, partly because they meet at the pitch-and-putt course near campus.

At the expensive of showing my ignorance, what would be the format for a competition between two universities? Do you play head to head and the team with the most winners takes the prize or do you count total strokes? How many players make a team etc.? Just curious.

The way the do Golf in the NCAA the count the total stroke scores for all competitors of a team and the team will lowest stroke score wins as well the see who individually would have won the tournament and that goes towads individual rankings.

What benefit is there in having DG on the collegiate level?
It won't add exposure, it won't be approved until it's more popular, catch 22.
Athletic Directirs will be uninterested because its another non-revenue generaing sport, they have enough of these.
Are they really gonna give kids money to come to school to play disc golf, i.e. scholarships.
I think the sport would do well by distancing itself from the college image.

Hello? The benefit is that students would be able to play disc golf on a team, how cool would that be?

No, I have nothing to do with it.

I think you are grossly oversimplifying things. And besides the last time I checked, and I just finished playing a round, DG is an individual sport.

What I'm saying is that DG is best left to intramural/club status. Look at the success of this format, like MTL @ECU.
If you have a team you need a coach, a budget, a compliance director, and alot else.
I love DG, I want to see it grow, but as a former collegiate athelete, I just don't see this as the way to proceed. But thats just my opinion.

Don't people play ball golf individually?
I don't think that has stopped almost every high school and community college and university from having a golf team, and wouldn't you play for total strokes like in high school and college golf. They seem to have fun...

It might be best to use the same approach as Ultimate. Form a college association outside of the NCAA, and use it to strengthen the sport at that level. Ultimate teams are usually considered club sports and not subject to NCAA regs. Uni-Presidents and ADs are NOT going to accept Disc Golf or Ultimate until they either get a larger base or become revenue generators.

I never said this was about fun, Its about what will realistically work and benefit the sport.
