Default Lamesa Disc Golf

Lamesa has a beautiful park on the south side of town that would a great disc golf fit. The park is mostly flat with one area that has some elevation. The park however, does have really nice mature trees and a small creek that runs through the park. There has been some disc golf talk for a while (thanks Greg). We'll see what happens for Lamesa and disc golf. Continued hope.

There are a few locals that are playing DG. Let's hope that there will be a course for them (and us) to play in Lamesa. Chicken Fry Festival in Lamesa on April 30-May 1....hmmm and mmmmm.

Been lookin', been talkin', been askin' around. I've walked and looked and looked and walked...and thought and thought. Then to maps x10. There are local players. There are local beginner players. There is a local goto person to help out. Then there are the area players to help. I've got a REALLY exciting layout. I mapped and walked it a few days ago. It will be an excellent course....IF we get the go. Maybe we'll do a portable basket event soon....more later.

Well, I played one format with Rob, Toby, and Colby. Decided to do a full redesign....dang. Well, now at about version 15 and have a solid layout....and safe. I had the pleasure to play with three local Lamesa players. For the most part the layout worked well. A few adjustments will be made. Now the city just needs to pull the chocks. I'm hoping to run a portable event like we did in Brownfield about this time last year to test the course (I'll run a scoring program and make a few 10' adjustments here and there). Likely, a portable event might be in late Oct or even into November or December.

There is some movement, but don't get hopes up too high just yet. More later.

Okay, maybe hopes up high. Met with city manager and assistant. Rightfully so, there were 'why disc golf?' and many other questions. We had a great meeting. There is now support to put in a disc gold course in Lamesa. This park is one of the best parks for disc gold in the area. There are large trees and much green grass (even this year). Local players will be the key to finalize the funding and final installation of this course. Oh, more later.

Hardcopy proposals with much information contained made. Some friends with Lamesa connections are really helping out in getting proposals to some key local individuals. Proposals were delivered. Now wait and pray.

So, now I've got a bunch of more things ahead. It is lots and lots of work and time, but all worth it! Next step will be many behind the scenes things, but I'll try to again run a portable event of my most recent design. With touchy weather this time of year, I'm going to try to give a six day or so notice (when the forcast is pretty accurate). December 3rd is out for Drive 385 (Brownfield, Levelland, and Littlefield)....got to the Facebook page), December 10 is out for Mike's event, but maybe December 17th....I'll check more and have more later. DISC GOLF IN LAMESA!!!!

Thanks. None of the courses in the Lubbock area were 'easy' to get 'in'. Usually, they were a loooong time coming, as in a couple of years, with some around six years from my first approach to actual installation. Lamesa will be different from most "West Texas" courses....Forrest Park in SW Lamesa (see Google Maps or other) has many large trees and much very lush grass. They water all of the time...which actually will be a problem with play during the day during the weekdays. Down the road, I want to figure out the watering cycle and try to get it posted on a course sign. Wow, destination Lubbock and area for disc golf, what a nice surprise!

Just thinking ahead a little for the Lubbock and area disc golf tour: Day 1 drive south in the am to play Lamesa and in the pm play Brownfield. Day 2 go west young man and play Levelland in the am and then a short drive north to play Littlefield and then Muleshoe. Day 3 play Mackenzie in Lubbock and then north for pm in Plainview and maybe Olton and Abernathy. Fit in McAlister if the arm is still hangin' on. Day 4 option would be a trip to Amarillo/Borger/Pampa or Big Spring/Colorado City/Sweetwater. Nice.

The course is being installed! Dirtwork started, forms were set, pads have been poured. It is likely that around 20 pads will be in by the end of the week (by 12-17-2011). The remaining pads should be in BEFORE Christmas!!! I'm really, really trying to get some parrallel work moving on tee signs, a course sign with map, and basket number markers BEFORE the baskets go in (remember xxxview and yyyfield and zzzlister). Join the Lamesa Disc Golf Facebook site.....

All 36 (red and white tees for 18 holes) tee pads are in the ground! Now to get the 36 (double basket anchors for 18 holes) in the ground. We are over half way with that portion of installation. 54 number signs (36 tee markers and 18 basket markers) are being made. We'll paint the basket markers Golden Tornado. There will also be a Golden Tornado with the red or white tee numbers on all 36 tee pads. A course sign will be ordered soon. Things are moving along on an actual map. Likely, baskets will actually go into the course late next week (as in after Christmas). Weather permitting, we may have a little kickoff event on the 31st. Monitor here and Facebook....the more the merrier for players that weekend!!!

It's on. Lamesa will be hosting a DISC GOLF TOURNEY! The event will take place at the newly installed course (this week) at Forrest Park in Lamesa. This is a one day event on Saturday December 31st - registration is from 8:30 - 9:30, then players meeting, then Round 1 (all from the red tees), then a lunch break, then Round 2. There will NOT be a final nine (or three). Entry is $10 for all players with $1 going to the ace pot (will throw off after Round 2 if not hit). We will have a CTB's (Hole 18 on Round 1 and Hole 17 on Round 2). We should be done early enough to make the New Year's celebration parties.

Jose' and Robert and others have really been working hard in getting the course ready for tourney Saturday. I hope everyone is pleased with the course. I installed the course descriptions/directions/etc. and info into both the PDGA and DGCourseReview. C'mon, play Lamesa!

Work at the course continues! Tourney tomorrow - one round red, second round white, $10 (includes ace pot +). The last day of the year weather in Lamesa is to be great with near 50 degrees at start time and over 70 degrees during round 2. Wind is to be the typical 10-15 mph. It's warm-up time for 'no wimps, no whiners'. C'mon, play Lamesa!

Okay, here are some results. We had 67 players for THE first ever DG Tourney in Lamesa! Wow! Yes, we do have some plans/talks to already look into having some overflow holes for future events. Players traveled from Clovis, Amarillo, Plainview (via Omaha), Abilene, Big Spring, Midland, Littlefield, Levelland, Brownfield, and Lubbock. THANKS for supporting guys! I had five divisions for this event. Rec and women threw red’s both rounds while all others threw red then white. Rec was the biggest division with 24 players. Cody (Brownfield birthday boy) took the win with a 113 (after some minor confusion). Lisa traveled from Clovis to take the win with a 125 in the four person women’s division. Trey (Lubbock) won with a 110 in advanced in a field of 18. In the old guy division we had 10 players where Greg (Big Spring) and Eric (Lubbock) tied for first with a 111. Marcace (Lubbock) won open with a smokin’ 98. We can’t really declare course records just yet as there were three portable baskets used (14, 16, & 17) and we’re not quite yet in a defined format yet. BUT, Bo threw a very hot 44 from the red tees. Marcace threw a 50 from the white tees. The red tee round front and back played fairly similarly with generally a stroke more on the back. The white tee round front was usually around two strokes or so lower than the back. Hole 11 misc. – highest score from red was 7, lowest were several 3’s, highest score from white was 8, lowest was a 3 (Bryan Davis). CTB’s for Round 1 were questionable as 23.3” does not equal 23.3’ (and decimals are not used in English system….so I lost out on the CTB that really was mine). CTB in second round went to Dwayne Collins. No aces hit, so throw off, and I think Isaac, Oliver, and Jordan win some cash. The course is still being installed with OB lines, better mando markers, OB lines (cables, fence, paint, etc), a course sign, tee marker signs, among other things. If OB was circled as requested on the cards, there were only 58 total OB’s out of 2,412 holes played (or apx 8440 throws). So, there is only a 2.4% chance of OB per hole and only 0.7% chance per throw. The very high majority of OB was on holes 11 and 15 as expected. There were a few OB’s on 1,2,3, and a very odd OB on 18. Robert Seal and Jose’ Barron (and Kristie and family) really, really made this event happen in a very short crunch time week of prep. Come back to Lamesa again…the course will be even better in the next few weeks. Go rate the area courses at PDGA.com and DGCourseReview.com (I think it will be good for us regionally). Also, in late April each year, Lamesa holds a 'chicken fry festival'.....hmmm, might be a good time to hold another tourney......)

Lamesa DG is fully installed with 18 baskets with red and white tees. Red and white marks on the baskets mark the direction to the next tees. There are two basket locations for most every hole (will be completed soon). A course sign with map, local rules, contact info, and club info will be installed soon (early Feb 2012). A club is being formed and weekly events are coming soon. A tournament likely in late April will be the big course kickoff event. Next.

The course sign is in (early April 2012). All baskets (dual locations) and all tee pads (red and white) are in. The locals are now organizing and have had a few meetings. Plans are for a weekday doubles (likely from the red tees) and a weekend singles by division. Also, the club will be hosting a disc golf demo/promotion at an upcoming local festival, a charity tourney, a competitive tourney (likely early fall 2012), and other club activities. The best place for updates would be on the Lamesa Disc Golf Facebook site. Disc golf days are good in Lamesa!
