Thumbs up PDGA Major Event: 2012 Pro/Am Disc Golf World Championships, Charlotte, NC

http://www.pdga.com/files/documents/...Criteria_0.pdf

Question:
For points qualification- Does one need to have their 500 points in MA1 to qualify? or is it just AM points in general?

Points are either AM or PRO - doesn't matter where they came from - you would need to play ADV or age protected (if eligible) anyways as there is no INT or REC or Novice divisions at Worlds.

E-mail sent to Andrew about hopeful typo on the junior age issue.

Alot of multiple Junior World Champs (as well as Future World Champions ) and their parents will not be happy if it is not a typo.

Can we still earn points in 2012 leading up to the 2012 worlds?

No. Invites will be posted in early Feb based on points earned in 2011. All members will be able to enter around mid-May after those who have invites have the chance to register for 60 days. Any points you earn in 2012 go toward a potential invite in 2013.

I think there will be 4 or 5 courses used in 2012 so it shouldn't be that tough.

Not sure what you are referring to the Criteria has not changed from my sons first worlds 2006

Criteria #2

Younger Divisions - all male and female Amateur members born 1998 or later whoplayed in a Tour event in 2011.

(No matter what there Points Standing is. This has always been a way to encourage and promote junior players to compete at world championships. Rules for the age protected divisions superceedes all other requirements)

Wyatt -you are missing the important change I was talking about it now has a YEAR listed instead of ALL juniors as it used to be - keeping JUNIORS born BEFORE 1998 from entering if they just played a PDGA Event in the previous year as it had always been and CHANGING it for those born BEFORE 1998 to having to not only have played a PDGA Event in the previous year, but having to have a minimum amount of points - meaning playing 3-4-5-6 (Depending on how bad a player you were) PDGA Events to get the same invitation you used to get by just being a JUNIOR OF ANY AGE member and playing 1 PDGA Event.

By the time this info came out - there is no time for JUNIORS born BEFORE 1998 to earn points in most areas of the country as this time of year PDGA sanctioned Events are winding down or do not have divisions suitable to be able to make any points (such as playing ADV women or Pro Women where you would only earn 1 point for playing.

So long story short - the criteria HAS changed and with no advance notice it possibly WOULD BE changing until it was practically too late for people to try to qualify for the NEWLY CHANGED criteria.

Keith- Thank you. I do see now. The date didn't not look wrong .I know Andrew will get an Invite. It is hard to believe he is no longer playing 10 and under. " that was a few Titles ago.(this year is his last in 16 and under). ." I do see the problem and as you know, you and I have spoken out for the young disc golfers of the World many times. I hope the PDGA can make the Proper allowances for this. or at least change it back. 2012 will be the 7th worlds Andrew has competed in and the 7th that I have enjoyed as a caddie/father/Disc Golfer. in all these years I have never seen a Jr. Disc Golfer that did not deserve to be there and to complete. I have always felt enough has never been done for them. We must encourage them to want to return. they should be the spot light of week. our Future is in their hands.

So to leave out or make it harder for them to get in is the wrong direction for the PDGA. Thank you again for pointing out what I missed. hope to see you in 2012.

Andrew still remembers signing your world champion t-Shirt. one of his favorite memories.

You need to remember that those are the qualifications for an invitation, not the qualifications to compete. Older juniors who did not earn their points will still be able to sign up when registration is opened to all PDGA members.

Very true. but take it from a Disc Golfer that is not a World Class player. Who can not compete at the level that a World Championship Requires. when I get my invitation letter every year I feel a little extra pride in myself.

True Bruce, but keep in mind with it being a combined Worlds with a limited number of players - Juniors may be on the BOTTOM of people or last to be invited if spots remain (which I believe is the reason for the change to begin with as the PROS would whine like crazy if they had to be waitlisted while a junior got in) - it will go PROS first, them AMS - so we'll see if any can get to sign up or get in that aren't invited - but if Santa Cruz in 2011 is any indication - NO ONE who wasn't invited and wanted to play who wasn't REGISTERED as a PRO got in and it sold out 2 months in advance.
Unless you were the sportman of the year and then you could just show up to play.

Bruce, You are usually pretty imformative and very knowledgeable about the sport, but on this point - you are way off - and it would be sad to see my daughter (a member since the year she was born 14 years ago and the youngest person to play in a PRO worlds) along with scores of other juniors who might not be able to play because the PDGA CHANGED the criteria for invites at the end of the year with NO warnings or hints that the criteria was under consideration to be changed before this late date, so that they could plan their schedules accordingly to have a chance to be invited - when in the past, they only had to be a member AND participate in a PDGA sanctioned Event during the previous year NO MATTER thier age (as long as they were 19 and under).

This change (ESPECIALLY during a combined Worlds which ALWAYS has more family and Juniors that travel together) sucks and I'm going to continue to ask the powers to be to put in the change in for 2013 instead which would give everyone 13 months to plan as well as the ability to send it out in E-Mails, and newsletters to make sure that ALL paying PDGA Members have that knowledge, instead of just saying it at the end of the year when no one can do anything about it as it was done this year.

I still have that shirt and will have it agin this year for Andrew to sign again!

I'll be there regardless, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Lorelei - who only gets to play in combined Worlds at this point in her life.

Keith, Juniors are playing different courses than the pros. The FJ1 & FJ2 field size caps are based primarily on junior entries and am women with additional flexibility if needed since 14 courses are being used.

Keith, what Chuck might be saying is that Juniors will have one or more pools of their own. A junior playing on junior courses will not be taking a spot away from a pro on the pro courses, and vice versa. Besides, given the obvious reason for running the pros at the same event as the ams, the organizers will not be shorting themselves on Ams so they can wedge in more pros. That would be like expanding the size of the NBA team to 100 and then getting rid of the courtside seating!

That's how KC did it in 09, and the Juniors seemed to enjoy it, plus it allowed them to schedule outside things to as a group if they opted to do so. Hopefully that would happen or at least be a consideration in Charlotte.

Hopefully this all works out - everyone who wants to play gets in, and there are no issues -and lastly I would also hope that the GM's get to play tougher courses than the juniors do unlike the way it was in 2009.

Even if everything does work out lovingly - It still doesn't overide the way it was BADLY handled and presented with no chance to discuss, and NO explanation of why it was done - If any Junior can get in anyways in 2012, why is there an age limit or that you have to have X number of points or you don't get an invite? - instead of the way it had been where EVERY Junior gets invited and EVERY Legend gets invited as it had been in the past - and THEN you institute the plan with points going forward in 2013 and the future where you won't have 14 courses - and you WILL have to cap the entry number of players making the points mean something.

Any idea what courses Masters and Grandmasters will be playing? I would like to spend a couple of weekends playing them if possible. I realize the possibility that some of the courses are not completed yet. Any updates would be greatly appreciated. IMO this worlds could easily fill. Don't fool around, enter asap.

Stratus- I was told Masters are going to be playing Hornets Nest, Renaissance, and Eastway? Not sure of the name of that last one.

I am curious if we are going to be playing The Web, and Renny Gold layouts?

BUT i have talked with serveral queen city natives that are involved in the planning and they seem to think that nothing is set in stone yet.
MrJB i am with you as well in that i would like to know if we will play the web and renny gold. both would make for the perfect one day tee time rounds that worlds has. More info. hopefully coming soon.

Anybody have any information on what courses are likely to be played by MA1 Advanced Men or Advanced Women? Of those courses, do you know which are likely to be open on Christmas Day?

Most likely planning on coming in July for my 1st Worlds. I'm pretty excited. Can someone tell me what average entry fee is for MA1 and what a players pack might consist of? Also maybe a rough timeline of events from Saturday to Saturday. Thanks.

The tournament itself is usually around $100, but there are optional games for mixed doubles, distance, mini golf, putting and skills.

Which reminds me, if a top amateur man wants to play the mixed doubles with a top amateur woman, my daughter Kiralyn will be looking for a partner. My wife will be looking for a partner too.
