Well, we made the front page of the Wall Street Journal today (pp. A1, A6). Not certain that it's a particularly affirmative piece. Good luck Austin...

The mention in the Wall Street Journal was not positive at all; it noted that Austin TX was requesting $886,000 for a "frisbee golf course" and included a picture of what I think was an old Wham-o Masters frisbee (about 35 years old). The implication was of course that frisbee sports are kind of silly. I'd love to hear the story behind the $886,000 though - that's got to be the most expensive disc golf course ever!

The course was supposed to have a big proshop which probably took up a lot of the costs. At least building that would help the contractors, architects, plumbers, electricians, lumber companies, painters, etc.

Default Kamloops

Kamloops Daily News had a nice article on this past weekends ultraglide PDGA event.
congrats to Oregonians Feldberg, King & Sexton !! $$$$$$$$$$$$$

~~Dave holds course records on ALL Houck designed courses? WOW

June 15, 2009

Kamloops – Dave Feldberg was the big winner at the Ultra Glide disc golf championship Sunday, but James MacInnes was the guy wearing the biggest smile.

Feldberg, the defending world champion and the top-ranked player in the world, shot 153 over three rounds to win the men’s open division of the championship, which was held at the two Rose Hill courses on Saturday and Sunday. Feldberg, whose rating is 1,036, the highest in the world, earned $1,200 for his work.

But Feldberg, a native of Delton, Mich., was expecting to do well. MacInnes, a 31-year-old Vancouver native, had only one thing in mind — earning a spot at the U.S. Disc Golf Championship, which is scheduled for October in Rock Hill, S.C.

“That was my only goal,” said MacInnes, who has been a professional since 1995. “I’m not here for cash or to beat (Feldberg). . . . I’m proud of myself that I persevered and got in.”

The spot at the U.S. championship went to the top Canadian, a title MacInnes sealed by a single stroke after shooting 169 over three days. He finished up with a 58 in Sunday’s final round.

“I wasn’t looking for that — the jitters got me a little,” he said. “It was rough, but I stayed composed. I really stuck it out.”

Feldberg was the main draw for the weekend event, which was played on the Rose Hill and Black Rose courses. He held a clinic for amateur players on Friday, and set about dominating the field on Saturday and Sunday.

He liked his chances coming into the tournament, and liked them even more once he saw the length of the two courses. Add in the fact that John Houck designed the Black Rose course, and Feldberg was a lock.

According to Feldberg, he holds the course record on every Houck-designed course.

“The courses really suited me,” said Feldberg, 32. “There were a lot of big power shots . . . the strongest point of my game besides putting is the power side.”

Feldberg, who said his caddy, Robert Mensing, was invaluable, shot 51 in each of the three rounds, two of which were played on the par-59 Black Rose course.

The second round, on the older par-55 Rose Hill course, was played in 70-km/h winds.

“I have some experience in that — I’ve played a lot of tournaments in wind,” Feldberg said. “This year there was a national tournament in Oklahoma, which is about the windiest place in the States. Putting from (five feet), they wouldn’t stay in the bucket.

“To me, it was kind of windy (Saturday), but I felt I was still in control.”

Feldberg had nothing but good things to say about the new Black Rose course and the people who helped build it. He also said that if he were invited back and it fit into his schedule, he would jump at the chance.

“I can’t imagine the work they put in out there — laying those tee pads in the sun,” he said. “It’s a really nice course — they’ve done a good job.”

Nate Sexton of Oregon, who shot 163, was second in the pro division and took $800 back to his home in Oregon. MacInnes earned $500 for third.

Melody King of Oregon won the women’s pro division and earned $730. Hank Stropky of Vancouver won the 40-plus division and $625, and 78-year-old Victory Fedyna of Edmonton won the legends division.

Mark Coupe of Kamloops won the amateur division.

I seriously doubt that is what Dave F. said. He may have said something to the effect that every course where he has set/tied the course record was designed by John Houck, or given the history of journalists' inaccuracies with DG, may have said something completely different.

The reason people play disc golf is not because of the td doing a good job, it's because of the recession.

Default Cal State Univ. San Marcos Disc Golf Course in the news

Great story about the CSUSM Disc Golf Course on the front page of today's North County Times (North San Diego County):

http://nctimes.com/news/local/san-ma...0c4644b57.html

It's at the top of the front page, two pictures, big headline and it is the feature story on their web page. Good quotes from the university's Director of Campus Recreation, the City's Community Services Director and a student.

As a follow-up to the previous post, there is a story in today's North County Times (San Diego County) covering the grand opening ceremony that was held yesterday for the Cal State University San Marcos Disc Golf Course.

http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/sa...tml?mode=story

Great event, attended by about 200 people, right in the middle of campus. How often do you get a university president to throw out the first disc?

From Dan Doyle:

"Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) was leaving a press conference at Brakewell Steel Fabricators in Chester, NY and stopped to talk with a few veterans about installing Disc Golf courses at VA hospitals in the Hudson Valley. Although a novice, Senator Schumer obviously displayed excellent putting form."

Default Celebrity Disc Golfer in the news

Wildcat Weekly on the Web, January 7, 2011

DISC GOLF NOW AT NMS
Northwestern is very excited to unveil our new 6 hole disc golf course for our students. We once again have to thank a family in the community for working with us to design and install a disc golf course that can be utilized in PE with the students and by the community after school, on weekends or during the summer. Disc golf is a great game that requires no previous playing experience and can be enjoyed immediately. We are very excited to offer another unique middle school experience for the kids and hope to see the course frequently used by the community. Thanks for continuing to support us as we strive to improve our programs and facilities. Pictured above is Coach Holzapfel and 8th grader Lorelei Johnson.

PARENT RECOGNITION
Mr. Johnson (parent of an 8th grader - see picture in article above) donated his time and expertise to design and install a 6 hole disc golf course at NMS over the holiday break. This course will be utilized by the physical education department, but will also be open to the community on weekends and after school. This course provides a very unique and enjoyable experience for the students and would not have been possible without his assistance.

Disc golf
Don’t laugh. The invention of the flying disc, which was trademarked as a Frisbee in the late 1950s by Wham-O, has spawned all kinds of activities, including football and “ultimate” competitions worldwide. Today there are more than 2,600 courses nationwide, with 11 to 14 percent annual growth. The Professional Disc Golf Association had more than 14,000 active members in 2009, as well as men and women pro players, who are sponsored by equipment companies. In 2010, worldwide tournaments offered nearly $2 million in prize money.

Why is this article so slanted towards a single aspect of the suspected criminal's interests and backgrounds? Why is it not incriminating against computer shop owners, IT people, t-shirt makers, techies or so on? Maybe better, why didn't it focus on people who let a 14 year old do activities without supervision and associate with strangers, let alone inappropriately associate in their presence?

"Leatherbury told the court Irwin invited the boy to his Onancock computer store, made T-shirts for the boy and gave him gifts, including disc golf equipment and a laptop computer with a webcam"

IMO, a hack job article that places an improper focus on a single aspect of the incident and shows the writer of having an internal bias of some sort. Why wasn't it a slam on back yard tenters? I hope local disc golf people are writing letters to the editor or paper itself complaining about the article and the way unfairly puts the sport in a bad light.

To be clear, no qualms with you or your post, cwphish. But I think we sometimes need to quit apologizing and stand up against the crap comments based on stereotypes and misperceptions.

As a therapist that specializes in working with children whom have been sexually abused and dually diagnosed, after doing some additional inquiries, it is clear that this ******* was using disc golf as a tool to engage and break down his victims. I'm pretty sure by the time he goes to sentencing, more victims will be identified. Unfortunately, ******* identified this to law enforcement who then identified it to the media. Add the drugs and this one is right up there with any negative publicity to date that I can recall. As far as misperceptions, I don't see one. This is a sexual offender that uses drugs, disc golf, t-shirts, laptops, etc. as a tool to commit his crimes. The recidivism rate for sex offenders with these documented behaviors is 88%, no matter the treatment, including castration.

One of the many tools, which included the computer store, computer gear, communications over social media outlets, gifts, drugs, in person meetings without supervision including at the victim's home, t-shirts and so on and was fueled by a real lack of parenting. I would think it would raise some sort of concern when a 44 year old is hanging out alone with your 14 year old son, provides him with a computer and web cam and calls him his bestest buddy.

I agree with the characterization of the low life, but I don't agree with the way disc golf seemed to be focused on, nor would I if the focus was a skateboard park or hot fishing spot. These creeps walk all areas of life. In education, youth volunteeer groups, amongst religious leaders, in youth sports and so on. About anywhere youth are present and accessible. When one of the cases hits the news, I don't broadbrush an activity, profession or vocation because of it. IMO the news article did and should be responded to.

Here's our area's latest: http://www.fdlreporter.com/article/2...5-years-prison. I don't see the story being delivered up as a reflection on the nature of school district administration.
