There is NOTHING cool about this.
Not cool but in the lead sentence "police started getting tips from neighbors and flying disc players" certainly says that players were part of the solution, or at least reported the situation.

Brian Lamoreaux sent me this Cedar Hill's paper news article:

Disc golf course putt above the rest

By STEVE SNYDER

News Editor

Unknown to most residents, Cedar Hill has one, or even two, of the area's top golf courses tucked away in the southwest corner of town.

No, the city fathers didn't steal Tangle Ridge from Grand Prairie by moving the city limits a mile west.

Instead, the courses are at Lorch Park, and the choice of attack is not a Titleist 2 but a throwing disc (please, not a “Frisbee.”)

Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department Director Steve Meadors explained how the course idea took off and reached fruiting, in conjunction with Cedar Hill Disc Golf Association President Brian Lamoreaux.

Meadors said Lamoreaux approached him about a space for disc golf. Meadors' staff found a location at the park, the Lester Lorch Nature Preserve to be precise, and went from there.

“We received permission from the Dallas County Open Space Program, who we have a 99-year use agreement with, to build the courses,” he said. “Lamoreaux recruited some well-qualified disc golf players from out of state to help with the lay of the courses.”

During the same time frame, Lamoreaux began to plan, organize and coordinate the Cedar Hill Disc Golf Association (CHDGA).

“The CHDGA and the Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department made a request to the Cedar Hill Community Development Corporation for funding, and the project was approved in the amount of $25,000. After funding was approved, there was a joint effort between the Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department and the CHDGA to construct the courses,” Meadors said.

After the courses were completed, Meadors said the city has had a number of local players, players from around the DFW area, and players from out of state play the courses during the week and on weekends. In addition, the CHDGA has hosted a number of tournaments that brought players from the DFW area, the state, and out of state into the community. Lamoreaux said some of these tournaments have drawn 120-150 people, attesting to the popularity of the site.

“The association is only a small portion of the park users that frequent the facility. Every time I go to the park I'm amazed at the number of cars in the parking lot,” he said. “ And, due to the size of the park, you could play two full rounds and rarely run into another person.”

Why the popularity? Because, according to both Meadows and Lamoreaux, the two courses are top-notch.

“I have heard several players say that we have the best disc golf course in the DFW area, maybe in the state of Texas,” Meadors said.

“I have a biased opinion of the courses, but several local and national players have rated it very high in comparison to other courses in the area,” Lamoreaux added.

He said it would probably rank as one of the top three disc golf sites in the Metroplex.

“The most famous courses in DFW would be Veterans Park in Arlington, ZBoaz in Fort Worth and then the courses at Cedar Hill. The courses in Cedar Hill are shorter than Veterans and ZBoaz but the dense vegetation and challenging terrain factor into the enjoyment,” Lamoreaux said.

Beyond that, the natural beauty at Lorch makes it a great place to play, he said.

“There's nothing like playing a round of disc golf in a nature preserve. Get there early in the morning and you may see some interesting wildlife. Coyotes, bobcats, foxes, beavers and rattlesnakes, along with a whole host of other animals, inhabit this park,” Lamoreaux said.

And, Lamoreaux's testimony is reinforced by out-of-town golfers.

“One of the reasons we're here is because nobody else is here. It's got great terrain; a lot of courses are pretty flat,” said Jace Ousley of Celina. “All the holes are a challenge; it's laid out well.”

“There's plenty of hills; it's a nice course,” Jeb Wortham of Fort Worth said.

Meadors hopes and believes the disc golf courses are worthy of state recognition.

“We plan to submit the disc golf course facility to the DFW Parks and Recreation Area Directors Association and the Texas Parks and Recreation Society (TRAPS) for the Facility Design and Construction category,” he said. “If the facility places high enough with TRAPS, it will automatically be forwarded to the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) for consideration.”

So, if you're worried about crowded tee times at Tangle Ridge, you can grab a Frisbee, even if you don't have a professional-model throwing disc, and tee it up at Lorch Park.

Disabled players' spirits soar on adapted Frisbee course

By Daveen Rae Kurutz
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, June 26, 2008

Sarah Kleifgen feels pretty comfortable on a golf course.

But there are no irons or woods in sight when Kleifgen, 16, of Mt. Lebanon takes to the course. She plays disc golf, which uses flying discs instead of golf clubs.

"I really like it, and I think I'm doing pretty decent for it being my second time," Kleifgen said. "It's something I'm better at than golf, and I can turn my attention toward throwing the Frisbee rather than everything else. It makes me feel like a pretty good golfer."

Kleifgen was one of about 50 campers to take to adapted greens Monday for a new program at the Woodlands, a Bradford Woods nonprofit that offers enrichment activities for children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Dedicated to former camper Elora Geier, the program will be a weekly addition to the nonprofit's teen camp.

The Woodlands has had an adapted golf course for several years, said Patrick Monaghan, director of operations, making the addition of disc golf an easy choice. The course features three ramped holes and specialized equipment to allow people with disabilities to play.

The additional equipment was paid for with a grant secured by the Woodlands and Elora's Hope, a nonprofit founded by Dan and Leslie Geier in honor of their daughter, who died from leukemia two years ago at 14.

"It brings tears to my eyes," said Leslie Geier, 49, of McCandless, who was on hand for this week's kickoff. "(Elora) always looked at the golf course and said she never could have played golf, but she could have played this."

That's the beauty of disc golf, said Gary Dropcho, treasurer of the Disc Golf Association and former ranking national player. Dropcho was on hand to teach the teens, several of whom use wheelchairs, how to play the game. Dropcho said the Woodlands' course, which features heavy-duty equipment that can be stored away from the elements, is the only completely accessible course the association knows of.

"It's a great game for all ages and abilities of people," said "You don't have to be a superstar athlete to do it. They're taking right to it, throwing (the discs) right down the middle."

That's what Tony Mazzarini was trying to do throughout his three holes on the par three course. Mazzarini, who like Kleifgen has spina bifida, but does not use a wheelchair, was starting to get the hang of it by the end.

He never really knew Elora Geier but was in awe of the strength her parents showed in organizing and dedicating the program to their daughter.

"It's a pretty amazing thing to do," said Mazzarini, 17, of Bethel Park. "I'm sure she's loving that. And so are we."

That may be a course that should go pay-for-play. Grand Haven is a summer tourist location and I suspect that people causing problems may be those traveling thru or just there for the summer and not locals. Charging like they do for miniature golf and all the dutch tourist traps around there might just work to reduce those problems.

More like disc sports in media, but for what it's worth:

June 14th issue of Sports Illustrated, page 89 has an article on Joel Silver, who is credited as being a part of the origination of Ultimate Frisbee. The article also features the Dan 'Stork' Roddick Ultimate picture that was also on page 8 of the last issue of DGW.

Another SI article on Joel Silver can be seen online at:

Default Disc Golf on CNN!

a camera crew from CNN will be at TNT (thursday night triples) at druid hill park in baltimore tomorrow.

they're doing a segment on less traditional, non-olympic sports that will air during the olympics.

unfortunately i don't get to be there (still in the outter banks on vacation).

Heres an article about disc golf in the Raleigh area, playing the game professionally and other things. One of the better articles I've read in a long time and on the front page of the sports section in a major newspaper.
