For those who haven't heard yet, Monroy Gowens died sat in a garage fire. I don't know exact details so I will just say that his smiling face will be greatly missed at the golf course. Rest in peace brother.

Monroy was a great person - plain and simple. You could never tell how well or poor he shot at a tournament just by looking at him because he was always smiling and laughing. While he was a very good player, he never took it too seriously. Disc golf was all about fun and friendship. The last time I saw him was at the 2009 Mad City Open. He greeted me with a big hug. There was a lot of joking around. His personality was infectious and for good reason. I will miss him a lot. I already do. Rest in peace Monroy.

I had the privilege of being Monroy's doubles partner this Saturday morning. The instant our discs both landed upside-down I knew I was in for a good time regardless of whether we played well. I was having a rough morning and Monroy as a teamate was a blessing. I had a smile on my face for two hours thanks to Monroy's good nature and his fun-loving personality.
I was heartbroken upon news of his passing. Less than 12 hours after I waved goodbye to him did I find out that I would never golf with him or hear his voice again. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who knew him best: his family and close friends. I can't even imagine how hard it is for you. My memories of Monroy include his constant smile, the occasional Negro Modelo, the mention of an impending throat punch (all in jest), and the way he was friendly and encouraging when I was new to the sport and to the community. My friend, you will be deeply missed. I am grateful for the rounds we have played together and for having known you. |

It is difficult to believe that Monroy is gone. He was a great guy, always positive, always had a good word to say. My favorite memory of Monroy is when he partnered up with Barry in a skins game at the 2005 Milwaukee Open and hit some giagantic shots to win some big money. He was a great guy.

RIP my brother. We will all miss your smiling face and your never ending good cheer.
I first met you at the first Fish Fly Open when we tied at 9 down to go into a play off. God Bless you and your family. I'm glad to have known you. To play golf, tip back a few beers and share in some laughs. |

I just read this and heard for the first time here and have to say I am shocked and saddened by this news. I just saw him that day too at Dretzka in the morning as I got out to play a few holes. He was in great spirits as always.
He will be missed, great guy on and off the course. May he rest in peace. |

My last memory of Monroy was one of my favorites. He and good buddy Dave O'Keefe were at the Howler on hole 17 but my partner and I were starting on 4. I couldn't help but run over and chat with them while warming up because they were heckling me as usual. Needless to say they were both hammered and practically rolling on the ground while we all talked a little trash and prepared for the upcoming round. I politely declined the PBR offer and I know they were happy because they really didn't want to give one up anyway. Fun loving, hearty laugh and smile, and always a pleasure to play with. As others have already stated - Monroy had a spirit that more disc golfers should emulate.
I received the phone call about the news from Sleepy on Sunday morning just 20-some minutes after a tragic call from my step-father. The inevitable time had come as my beloved mother had passed away just hours after Monroy. 3.5 years ago she had an inoperable brain tumor and she underwent extensive chemo and radiation. The cancer was in remission for over 3 years until they found a massive tumor just a few weeks ago. On December 10th I was with her until she went into surgery to have it removed. They removed most of it and hoped to get the rest with a cyber knife. Unfortunately her post operation recovery didn't go well enough for that to happen and about 10 days later she passed away. I like disc golf and lots of other things out there but I have no greater love than what I have for my wonderful mother. She is far too young at the age of 58 to have multiple bouts with brain tumors but as the saying goes, "Life just isn't fair sometimes". I love and miss you mom! Nothing prepares you for helping write your own mother's obituary: http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbc...=2009912270569 My mother's funeral will be the 4th one for me in about 5 weeks. As some others may have already known, we also lost local disc golfer back on December 1st and that was Mike Zippel (PDGA 30887). He died tragically as a result of his friend being under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Does anyone know of any services or arrangements for Monroy? I have been watching JSOnline since that day but haven't seen any news or updates regarding any services. I apologize that this post veered all over - I didn't really know what was about to come out when I decided to finally write. |
