Well, we had the first ever Muleshoe discs flying at a tourney event. And, oh WERE THEY EVER flying in the wind! We started out with some wind – as in 20-30 mph and by the end of the first round, the wind was up around 40-50 mph. We broke for lunch and lost a few players. I decided to shorten the second round to only nine holes. When we started the second round, there were sustained winds around 50 mph and I think gusts up around 60 mph. Needless to say, it was a challenge…it was almost comical. Overall though, I thing (hope) everyone had a good time.
We had 34 players come test out the course. I’m not going to read too much into the scores (this was one of the reasons for running a portable event). PLEASE, if you have comments on the course contact me. Here are some happenings and stats from the tourney. Tom Tom took the CTB on hole 1 on round 1. Jordan took the CTB on hole 7 on round 2. They shared five discs and a strap (many of which Tom Tom donated anyway….thanks). Most players entered the ace pot ($5). No aces hit, so we had a throw off and paid top four. Steve M won $80, Oliver, Matt R, and Drew M got something as well.
For the tourney, we played red nine with added A & B holes and then white nine with added A & B holes for round 1. The wind came and for the second round, we played nine holes (women and rec from red, all others from white). Ryder R won (132) rec followed by Phil A, Rick B, and Drew M. Julie M won women’s (137), followed by Lisa G (donated to the CTB….thanks), and Wanda L. In advanced, Elias G from Plainview takes the win (123), then Beard, and a tie of Cody P, John S, and Jose B. In master’s Steve M wins (128). Rob, V, and Rick L follow. Steve R and William T play in the division…first tourney ever! In open, Darren takes advantage of an old cripple and wins by one (112), followed by me, Chris L and Rocky tie, and Matt R. Who was that at the bottom? Ha.
In the tough wind, there were still a few birdies (Ryder on possibly the longest putt of the day, Steve M, Darren, Chris L, Tom Tom, Jordan, Elias, Beard, and Jose). Ryder had the only back to back birdies also (red 5 and red 6 on the long putt). Understandably in the wind there were a couple of 10’s, several 9’s, and a few snowmen. Some puts would hit chain, fall, then roll 50’ away downwind. I saw Julie nearly park an upshot only to have it roll at least 150’ away! Right to left wind on hole A lead to the most street OB. Hole B has some OB shown. Very few others had OB shown on the cards. The nine double mando from the white threw pretty much with the wind. I heard that some players attempted to layup, others took the chance and ran at it. Toby M looks to have negotiated it best. From the white he threw a 3 and a 4 (no missed mando).
