The pledge of Allegiance from 1892
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
When reciting the pledge, you would stand with hands by your side. On a cue, you give a military salute to the flag. This first part was changed shortly afterwards to the following pic.

When you say ''My Flag'' your hand raises up to the Bellamy salute as if raising the flag.

This was changed in 1942 to just the hand over the heart for obvious reasons.
