I know what you mean, but technically, you can still start anywhere you want. If someone wants to walk down and start on hole#1 they are very much still free to do so. We have in the past.
From a matter of
convenience, since the gate is locked, it is preferable to begin play on either hole#5 or hole#6. We have done both in the past.
