This is terrible news. Took me a few days to process this. Cruz seemed invincible. Big ol guy. He was my mixed doubles partner for worlds in kansas city 2003. He made us t-shirts. Mine said "I hate Cruz" his said " My partner throws like a girl" we were the Texas Two Step. I told my Dad the news and he said "Oh thats so sad. Isnt he the guy who couldnt drive over bridges?" I laughed because in KC he stopped and made Vicente get out and drive over the big bridge. Very great guy. Talked s*%t like me, not to be mean, but to be funny. You will truly be missed Cruzita. My prayers go out to his wife and kids.

Third Coast retired a couple of numbers.

We lost a great dude, two years ago, Stan Perkins, and he had tag #37.
Cruz Rangel was given #13 in the last event he played with us at Ingleside.

I c an think of several Cruzita stories, but the one I like to remember is from Worlds in KC in 03. Cruz had lost a family member, he went to be with family and came back and finished the tournament.
The first time I met him was at San Saba, wearing a "Amateur for Life" shirt...

We have retired both numbers, 13 and 37. They will both never be reassigned and in honor of both guys we will have a paid entry into our Bud Select CC open each year, whether it is given during a raffle or to a member in need...

Just an idea,I think it would be a great idea to name one of the 3C events the Cruz Rangel Memorial and do some kind of donation to his family, something for his kids.Cruz had alot of friends all over Texas and I think this would help the numbers of the event as well as do something very nice for his family who I am sure are struggling.Beeville Might be the place to do this as he worked there and it is a little closer to SA where he had a lot of friends.Maybe contact the unit at the prison he worked at and get some donations from his co workers.Just a thought.
