Hobbs, NM will be installing a brand new nine-hole disc golf course into Harry McAdams Park. The course will play around the park that includes a lake, a large playgournd area, and many park benches/covers. Most holes will play on the flat very well maintained grassy areas. There are a few berms at the park that are next to the playground, lake, and a camp/RV area. Likely, a few holes will tee from or to a berm. Also, it is likely that a few holes will be in a 'terrain challenged' area. There is a camp/RV site at one end of the park (all discs must stay away from this area, as well as the playground, fishing, and picnic areas). There is a group shelter and a large fire pit area for possible tourney events. They have baskets on hand. Design and installation are soon to follow. More later.....

The Hobbs group are excited about the prospect of getting DG into the park. I'm to visit with them next week to work a few things out. More later....

I had the meeting. I was ready to mark holes. They're now dragging. A preliminary plan and misc materials never were delivered to the parks and rec director weeks ago. Now there's budget talk (lack of budget talk and so on). This one is all of a sudden not looking too good. There is talk of not marking, not doing this, or that. So, I'm now not sure if Hobbs will install properly (see Lovington tread). Sad.

I marked holes and communicated with city. The course will be a fun one to play if they install correctly.

Well. No baskets in. They put in sleeves, but they lost the markings for tee locations!!! So, I'll remark in a few weeks again (at least this is what was agreed). I'm hoping that they don't mark/install in incorrect locations. Again, more later.

I had the opportunity to again stop in Hobbs last week. The basket positions are in. They put the sleeves into sprinkler boxes. They all look good. They had help from the Boys Scouts for some of the installations. I went ahead and walked the course backward. While doing so, I went ahead and walked distances. I used to be pretty close....but not so sure anymore (leg, terrain, etc). These will be pretty close though.
Rec: These tee's will go in first.
1 - 400, 2 - 210, 3 - 500, 4 - 250, 5 - 300, 6 - 550, 7 - 250, 8 - 320, 9 - 400.
Total Distance - 3,180', Average 353',
Pro: These tee's will be marked but likely will not be installed immediately.
1 - 450, 2 - 270, 3 - 700, 4 - 370, 5 - 380, 6 - 650, 7 - 350, 8 - 430, 9 - 550.
Total Distance - 4,150', Average 461'
Together, total distance - 7,330', Average 407'.
I walked and marked and etc., then decided to play the course. I got to the pro 3, from a slight mound area. I still do not know exactly what happened, but while throwing a hard forehand roller, I slipped, fell, groaned, hit the ground, breath gone, and found myself laying on the ground. I think I either broke ribs or pulled muscles in my left rib cage area. I could not throw anymore, or for the next days to date. I plan to see how things are going tomorrow if a doc visit is needed. My injury timing may be good as a new leg is coming...and it will take a while to get used to also. I'll likely be headed to Hobbs soon and will have an update soon.

I passed through...no baskets in as of Aug 15. I went ahead and played to imaginary baskets. They were to mark and keep the holes marked....NOT...again! I remarked the holes again. I had a couple of twos, too many fours (ribs still not working well), and the courses first 5 via a water OB! The water OB will just not happen often...I tipped a branch on a tree, disc hit land and actually rolled backwards into the water. I'll update when baskets and tee marks are truly in place.

As of Aug 26th baskets not in. The city emps are busy with end of season weed control and mowing. Boy Scouts are to help out (I think) on install of pads, etc. They did some basket sleeve installation and put the baskets together. I talked to scout leader (ex fireman, now safety comp owner..:)). They're just waiting for the word to get started on pads, sign, tee signs, possible hole 4 & 5 enhancements.

Still no basket, sign, tee sign work done. I have trimmed the mesquite around the two safari holes a few weeks ago (it was killer). Today, I made 10 meter circles out of rocks around the two hole's baskets. I think that concrete and baskets should be installed in about a month....yes, hopefully by Thanksgiving! :))

I've not been able to get tho Hobbs since last post. I believe that they will be winding down with other projects and will begin to focus on DG soon.

I called the Hobbs' park rep today (11-6). He said that the mow season is done, concrete guys will be open for work, but they have Christmas in the Desert to do.......
He said they hopefully will be working on pads and signs by December.

I went by Harry McAdams Park in Hobbs a few days ago. There were Cristmas decorations where holes 7 and 8 are to be installed. I really think that the decorations could be place in a way that the course would not interfere with the decorations (or vice versa). Anyway, the pads (or baskets) are still not in. Maybe in December.

Just spoke with the Hobbs rep. He spoke with his boss about starting to get pads installed. I'm to visit and do some final measurements next week. Then, the crew should be ready to begin installations!

Good progress. Tees measured and marked well...and with a parks rep person. Hope to have things moving soon after Christmas decorations come down.

Hobbs will have DG soon, finally. Today (1-19) they did prep, pad locations are preped, so probably by end of week will have pads. Probably, soon after there will be baskets. They will only be pouring the rec tees. Pro tees are marked with paint on the grass for now (sad). Maybe in a monthish or so, I'll try to organize a play day to kick-off the course....like always, more later.

Okay, now sad again. At the very last minute, Hobbs decidend to scrap the concrete plans and put in caliche rec tees. Pro tees are not going in...look for the marks. They have a course sign that will be installed soon. Tee markers for the rec tees to be installed sometime tbd. At least there will be baskets and some designated tee pads in play very soon....yeah!

Yeehaw. On Feb 2, 2010 the baskets were put in!!! The rec tee pads are near completion. I'm not quite sure how they'll turn out...they are wood lined with caliche (not yet packed). These will be very slick when wet or when the 'pebbles' start to form. Be safe, play from behind the pads if needed. Tom (El Paso) and I were the first to play the course. I had the honors of the very first throw. I hit a tree and landed 5' away. Then, proceded to take the first four, and later the first five. I took a birdie on hole 2 (the first). Between he and I playing from the rec there were, six of nine scores that were not the same on the hole. The same was on the pro nine. With completion of the tees, some tee marking, a course sign, and maybe some enhancement on the two safari holes, this will be a fun course to play. It felt GREAT to actually throw to a basket and then to actually complete a hole! Thanks Hobbs!

It seems that I travel through Hobbs every other day for months, then I can't seem to get back there at all. I've not heard how disc golf things are going in Hobbs. I hope that the college, Scouts, church groups, and so on area even aware that it is there.

But, I did actually get to go and play a round and then meet with the parks director. Play was fun. The parks director was very cool and is going to support the course well!!! They put in the pro tees also! They are in process of finishing up the pro and rec (caliche) tee pads. Tee signs will be coming sometime relatively soon. Same for a course sign...relatively soon. They plan to open up a parking area for the hole 1 start area and course sign. Yeehaw. They also did some preliminary mowing on the two safari holes....encourages throws to be in a preferred landing area. AND, he agreed to look into putting in some mounds and mowing 12 meter circles (10 meter plus a little anyway). I also brought up getting a practice basket and planning for alternate basket positions in a year or so. I've been getting occasional emails about the course. Sooo, yes, it is now really time to go play. Thank the city for the course!

The word is out. Hobbs has DG. I've got calls/emails from a few locals and from a few out of towners who plan to visit or travel through Hobbs. So far, I've heard good things about the course (except for the tee pads). I really, really tried to get concrete. I'll be through Hobbs in a few weeks to see how things are going.
