2nd round of singles Jack shot +2 on the backside and I shot +4..JJ and Bucky were +2 or 3 I think also. 10 players for singles that round.

FYI, if you guys aren't on DiscGolfersR.us (http://discgolfer.ning.com/profile/My_Hero) you need to get on there. It's all about DiscGolf with over 6000 members in a short amount of time. It BLOWS this site away. It has personal pages, email, message board, club pages, live chat, tournament reminders, etc. Just go through my page and click sign up!

Just haven't seen many of you OMBs or YGBs over there yet.

my_hero
Jan 20 2009, 12:20 AM
Nope, i already have the best sponsor for my needs, and a great one for our sport and equipment. You know that.

Though 6200 members in just a few months is impressive. I'm interested in seeing how quickly it outgrows...well, you know. It sure does help me keep up with people that are always on the move. Send me that request once ya find your info.

Don't worry though, we can't just drop this site. If we did then they would have won. :D

Giles
Jan 21 2009, 01:24 PM
Sunday @ 10. $7 with $2 of it going to an ace pot that is currently at 0 thanks to Trey hitting 2 long (I watched from the bridge).
I should know by noon tomorrow if the course will be in for this weekend. Also keep in mind that even thougth the baskets will be in, it isn't finished. For example, we need to put fill dirt around the sleves. A foot bridge will be built, on 16 I think. Some trimming will need to be done. In other words, If something doesn't look right, it hasn't been fixed yet.

Thor
Jan 21 2009, 04:44 PM
I was on Trey's card on that ACE... it was one of the coolest I have seen.

B-Day Mark - Enjoy it!!!

Josh - you going to make it out? Sounds like Nate, Rusty, Leonel and I will be out there also with Krell and Watts most likely. Maybe Duke

Sent JJ a msg but haven't heard back yet...what about you Bucky and Parker?

Course record after day one from short to short is 49 and I heard 53 from longs to short

okcacehole
Jan 24 2009, 03:16 PM
Another fun addition to DFW golf for sure..

8 of us played some singles and Bucky shot -3..Leonel and I were +3 and JJ +6..not sure on Rusty, Nate..Thomas was -2 I think and Watts ++ :)

Nice use of the land for sure...bring your straight and turn-over game

Can't wait to play the long pins in a few months

How did the longs shoot JJ, Bucky and Rusty???

Jan 25 2009, 12:46 AM
Definitely a fun course and a challenge when the leaves come out. I shot a 58, missed several of the shorter hole birdies and had a spit through on the only hyser out there. That sign on #13 faiway has got to go or it will be gone before too long as I saw it hit once and heard it hit a couple other times. :o

Hey N8, you leave a star wraith out there? I got one with just Bitner , left by the creek. Not even in the water ;)

okcacehole
Jan 25 2009, 08:05 PM
That metal gas sign? Reminds me of the Vet's sign on #2

Sounds like Leonel took them out today at the mini and afterwards for the $5 a head..the locals are practicing their new baby :)

I think it can go in the top 10 in DFW pretty quickly

Thor
Jan 26 2009, 01:36 PM
top3 imo

Big E
Jan 26 2009, 02:50 PM
What would your top three be? I would have to probably say: Rockwall, Veterans, Crowley without trying out the new course! :D

okcacehole
Jan 26 2009, 03:47 PM
Rockwall, Z and Cedar Hill in no particular order

oceanjones
Jan 26 2009, 03:48 PM
Vet beats out Cedar Hill?

I did a little better on Sunday from the shorts shooting 52 (Leonel got me by a stroke).

Longs I shot 56, Rusty 57 I think, Bucky 59 or 60.

Par from shorts = 58
Par from longs = 59

Based on both asthetics and course play here are my top 5... not in order , it just depends on what your in the mood for...
Cedar Hill
Rockwall
Towne Lakes
Crowley
Zboaz

oceanjones
Jan 26 2009, 04:02 PM
I'm gonna tell you top 3 and why.

Rockwall...Its Beautiful and you have to stay tough mentally, you have to have the whole bag of shots, some boom is rewarded (does not help me, but I think it should be part of the game), teeboxes.

Cedar Hill...Its beautiful, you have to have all your shots, got to stay loose on this super technical course, two great courses on one piece of property, teeboxes.

Towne Lakes...The main reason it catapults up there is risk vs reward...there are at least 6 holes where you can go birdie or bogey if you miss your line. Also, mature trees will make it a summer favorite, its beautiful, you got to have every shot in your bag, two holes for the big boomers. Tee boxes

There is only one reason I don't have Zboaz on this list...its too crowded. Not the courses fault...its a fantastic course...but it does weigh in to my golf playing plans.

Crowley is great, but does not have the risk vs reward of Towne Lakes, though it does have a lot of variety with multipe tee boxes.

Giles
Jan 26 2009, 04:23 PM
I hear "risk reward" thrown around a lot and Towne Lake is the first course I've played where you truly have to choose if you want the safe 3 or go for the tempting two and have the very real danger of ob strokes if you don't hit the line clean. I'd say about half the holes make me think of my options before I throw.

Next summer (once the course is dialed in) long tees to B pins this course will be nuts.

Big E
Jan 26 2009, 04:46 PM
What would your top three be? I would have to probably say: Rockwall, Veterans, Crowley without trying out the new course! :D

I am also a big fan of Gateway Park and it would probably replace Veterans once the fairways receive a little trimming on a couple of holes! Okay maybe hard to pick top 3 with so many great choices! Cedar Hills is a favorite of mine! Crowley has always been my #1! So maybe Crowley, Cedar hill and Rockwall! But that is actually 4 courses :D

RustyP
Jan 26 2009, 05:06 PM
Cedar Hill is my top DFW course/complex...for all the reasons JJ said, and the fact that it's secluded and pretty much 100% disc golf at the park.

Rockwall would be my #2

Crowley has been my #3 for a while, but I think Towne Lakes ganked that spot after Saturday :D. I still love Crowley, but I think Towne Lakes plays a bit more fair...there really isn't much of a reward for having a cannon arm. I like the Vet, but not the entire course...I think some of the back 9 is pretty weak. The Z is great, but I haven't played it enough to make a fair judgment on that one.

My real top 3 (including all that I've played) would be Cedar Hill, Cedar Glades (Hot Springs, AR), then Lake Bistineau State Park (in Shreveport, LA). I know you guys would love Cedar Glades if you ever get a chance to make the trip! Super technical and trecherously hilly from start to finish...but still fair.

By the way, it was good seeing you guys on Saturday, although it was kinda brief ;)

Thor
Jan 26 2009, 06:11 PM
Vets has too many "lucky blind shots" to make my top list. I'm not a fan of Vets. I'd rather go to BC. Vets to me is another great piece of land that has bad holes on it. With that property there could be a much better course, if not two courses.

MY Top 3

1)Cedar Hill wins because it has 2 solid courses on one property.

2) Towne Lakes. Some well thought out holes and great use of land. Usually I can see clearly where a designer went wrong (imo) or misused a great section of the course on a few holes. Not so much out there.

...3:) Green belt, great course with tight holes and tons of trees and unbelievable use of baskets near the trecherous creekline... Oops J/K!!

3) Rockwall. Its a tough course. I like the long holes that aren't wide open. As vuh-JJ said basically you can get frustrated and have a bag flinger out there, it's hard to keep a level head. That said, it has a couple of flaws imo. Hole 17 and the mysterious OB line is near ridiculous, good example of bad teepad placement. A few more holes out there need to be trimmed out some. I like it tight but some holes there just no real line. Very similar to Gateway.

Crowley and Gateway close out my top 5. Gateway will take over Rockwall for me once it is cleared out and trimmed up a lil more. A few too many holes need have trees taken out to make my top 3...that and the baskets aren't in yet.. are they?

Big E
Jan 26 2009, 06:36 PM
I have to agree with you about the vet! It becomes more and more relevent compared to the new courses going in the ground! I also feel that cedar hill could use a little tree selection on a couple of tree lotto holes but over all these courses (CedarHill, Crowley, Rockwall, Gateway and town lakes (from what I have heard)) are going to set the bar for future courses in the metro! The rest need to design for the times we are playing in not the glory days of past!

okcacehole
Jan 27 2009, 07:28 PM
Definately some land restrictions on doing that as Fritz is one of our best courses still to date. Porter should be ready to reconfigure soon, if not already and we MAY get a little more land to work with.

GB could definately be reversed ( we have proven that ) on the same piece of land and make it a much tougher course with better shots IMO

The Bon just needs new baskets and I hope to see Fritz return the 18 someday

Looks like we are going to give Town Lake another run on Saturday for those not playing the lake event. 10am

baldguy
Jan 28 2009, 01:55 AM
I'm on the fence about playing the lake event... I probably won't though. I think the concept of a 1-day b-tier is kinda ridiculous for ams. it's great for pros because it guarantees them good added cash and usually a bigger field... but I'd rather have 4 rounds for anything above a c-tier. that's just me.

My top 3... wow, I think we have about 45 in DFW now, so I'm not sure I can pick just three :). I'll go with 5, in no particular order. also, this is before playing the new course in mckinney, so the list might change soon.

Rockwall. best 18 holes of disc golf on the east side of DFW. stunning landscape, awesome mix of shots, and one of the only true par 5 holes within driving distance. great baskets, signs, and teepads. and a City that loves our sport. It just can't get much better than this.

Cedar Hill. what everyone else said. having someone like HammyLamster dedicated to spending his free time maintaining and improving the course... that is the icing on the cake.

Gateway. This is a hard-earned, well-designed course. It's brand new, so it needs some trimming here and there and it needs to wear in. Once it does, prepare for greatness. I have issues with the layout on two holes, but I think with time they will either wear in properly or they will get changed. In spite of those two holes, the design is spectacular.

Z-Boaz. it's crowded, true... but it's still worth the drive to me. I don't think I'd want to contend with the crowd very often but it sure is a great course. I also think that the crowd will spread out a bit with gateway and a couple other new courses cropping up in the area.

Alex Clark Memorial. This might be a surprise to some, because it's not the same type of course as the others on my list... but the mix of tee positions, the beauty of the park, and the City who loves DG... it has to be on my list. it's also a park where I can shoot double-digits under par (on rare occasion), and those aren't many :)

baldguy
Jan 28 2009, 02:02 AM
I had another idea for a list. the driving factor. pick a favorite course in each of the following categories:

under 30 minutes from home:
Lake Park. I'm far from lots of stuff, but the lake is 7 minutes from my front door, and it's a lot of fun

30-60 minutes from home:
So many courses fall in this category... but my favorite right now has to be Gateway. If only because it's so new and fresh :)

60-120 minutes from home:
Tyler, hands down. I have before and will again drive to Tyler for the day to play casual golf. two (soon to be three!) courses in one park. tons of fun with a mix of shots and long teepads on many holes to up the challenge factor.

120-240 minutes from home:
Lake Bistineau. if you haven't been, you must. scenery like you won't find anywhere around DFW. totally worth the trip, plus you can do some other cool stuff on the way. like maybe play tyler ;)

anyone else?

RustyP

I only have 1 within 30min, so that's an easy one (Springlake Park)

There are 0 courses within the 30-60min mark :(

60-120min - Cedar Glades in Hot Springs...takes right at 2hrs from my parking lot

120-240min - Lake Bistineau...takes a little over 2hrs

I would hope we are off to a good start on that, but I also think the official thing is a joke..have you seen the current list? I haven't tested myself in years and probably am not fully up to date on the "newest" rule changes

I do know only a few in our group took advantage of the free testing..

Yeah, I'll be at the mini 10am Sunday @ Towne Lake. I'll actually be out around 8. Some of us get together before the mini and do course work. This week we are installing two picnic benches. One paid for by the course fund, the other Steve Harris & family. Depending how long that takes we may go clear sticks off 4's fairway.
The course is coming along very nicely. All the traffic is noticeably beating down the fairways. The city installed the number plates on the baskets and dumped dirt to backfill the concrete on the bridge. I went to war with 15's fairway after work one day during the week. I trimmed up a bunch of trees and drug a bunch of sticks off the fairway, you can see my piles of debris off too the right of the fairway. 4,13,16 and 17 are all in the B pin location. The sign on 13's fairway is out of the way. I think it was Justin Britten who started to clear the edge of the fairway on 3. The boards on the tree on 6 were replaced by a rope, soon to be replaced by a wire. Ben has plans to sink bricks at the 10 meter mark for all pin locations. I think 5 per hole, I have heard he already has the bricks.
Oh, and Haleigh birdied 18 at Towne Lake last night, sick!

You can add Deidre to the list of those who took advantage of the free official's test!

Towne Lake mini tomorrow morning is the plan for us. Will probably bring some plastic, too. If anyone wants to sign up for the WF tournament, I should also have fliers and reg forms with me.

Oh,man, is the new McKinney course open now? Last Saturday I was looking for somewhere to play, and ended up at GB, where I was happy to only have to take my shoes off and go into the creek twice, but I did skip 18, though.

If it is open, is there a map or is it signed yet?

Oh yeah, and thanks for letting me join your club. It saved me $5 off my renewal.

For those of you that had the great time to Enjoy the TX10 events...this came in from Chris today:

How about a even better update from the MAN himself - Miss you Chris:

He knew he could also count on me to update the masses

He sent this today:

G’day all my American Friends,

Just thought it was about time I chipped in and gave a quick update on what’s been going on. A few people have sent me emails over the last few months asking various things about me. I am not a current member so can’t post on the PDGA message board.

It’s now been about 2 years and 4 months since I left the US. Amazing how time flies and how things can change in such a short time. I haven’t picked up a disc in over a year but still have a wall in my apartment with all my favourite discs displayed along with plenty of Texas 10 and Lance Armstrong memorabilia. Friends that come over always are amazed at all the cool Frisbees I have.

I basically retired from playing and running disc golf events about a year ago. I did however a month ago trade several emails with one of the guys from the new Perth Disc Golf Club and supplied him with lots of info, business models, ideas, templates and some do’s and don’ts on setting up a disc golf event or club. I hope they take the advice to heart and all goes well. I have seen some news lately that they did the opposite to what I recommended on membership fees etc so I hope they can learn from things if they don’t go well first time around. Perth is such a great place for the sport it has always been a shame it has never really taken off as it should have. Hopefully these guys can get things rocking.

I now play “ball golf” as much as I can. I spent about 6 months last year with a full time PGA coach and learnt so much. My coach “a former LPGA pro” also allows me some input into her coaching and event management business. I also consult a little with my golf club on ideas for upcoming events and tournament procedures. It’s fun to keep a finger in the event management side of things. I had planned in about 3 years to be good enough to hit the Asian Tour circuit but over the last six months work has been going really well and I can’t see myself earning more than I do now playing golf. So for now I keep busy selling and designing houses for a building company and playing golf about twice a week. It’s good to know even in a low market I can still do well. Can’t wait for the next boom!

I am looking at making a trip to Shenzen China in December to play an amateur event at Mission Hills. It’s a complex of 10, yes 10 world class golf courses all grouped together. Each one has been designed by people like Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Annika. It is the Asian mecca of golf right now.

I recently bought a new apartment downtown right on the water with cafes, restaurants and bars all around. 20 yards to the bay with boating, water skiing and yachting and only 300 yards the other way to surf beaches. I love the location and atmosphere. As I said most of my walls are filled with travel photos, Texas 10 and Lance stuff. I may not play disc golf anymore but I haven’t forgotten all the fun had in the past.

My apologies to those people that thought we would stay in touch with each other. It’s a hard thing to do knowing you may never see that person or people again. It makes it hard to keep in touch however those people and friends that made my time in the US a great time will always be remembered, admired and appreciated. I do keep in touch with my brother from another mother Twisted Joe Rotan and love to hear and share all our ideas and thoughts on disc golf and life. Who knows one day this Aussie may surprise everyone and appear for the Twisted Flyer $1,000,000 Hole-in-One! Oops Joe did I let one out of the bag? Always expect the unexpected and always keep something up your sleeve.

I do keep an eye on the PDGA Message Board from time to time so know a little of what goes on. Funny to see names and events I know changing, not changing, been successful or not from the other side of the world.

Thanks again everyone and have a fun year.

Yours in Flight,
Chris Himing

great to hear from Chris again. I aspire to be half the TD he is :)

On another note - I talked to JJ a bit about this, but I'm going to let you guys know now: TitleDISC is getting to the point where we can afford to sponsor a few more players, but I want to take a different approach.

I know many of our club members are testing the Pro waters, and I know that with the jump to a cash division comes a drop in easily-gotten merchandise. I've decided that for any of our club members who fall in this category, TitleDISC will sell its *custom* merchandise at cost. This means shirts, hats, discs, and possibly even bags at some point in the future. Right now this is open to club members only, and only those who are regularly competing in the Pro divisions. I'm trying this out to see how it goes, and eventually I want to form a "Team TitleDISC" that will be featured on the website and will hopefully get other benefits as well.

The custom discs that these players will be eligible for include the following, for now:

Ch. Monarch
DX San Marino Roc
DX Aviar Driver
CH Boss
CH Sidewinder
CH Starfire
CH Wraith
Star Eagle
Star Destroyer
DX Glo Ontario Roc
X Soft Challenger
Z Flick
ESP Buzzz
ESP Force
... and a few gateway molds as yet to be determined (mostly putters)

So, if you're an OMB/YGB club member playing Pro, and would like to take advantage of this sponsorship, please send me an email - josh@titledisc.com - and let's talk :)

baldguy
Mar 02 2009, 10:34 AM
yeah way to represent JJ :)

got back from austin late last night. Got to play Wilco and Rivery which were two new courses for me. Wilco is one of the nicest courses I've played and has a great mix of shots with some really challenging holes. the course seemed to step all over itself several times with baskets near teepads and fairways really close to each other. That plus the lack of distances or hole map signage are my only complaints. In spite of all that the course was still a lot of fun. I hope there's a tournament at Wilco this year so I can go play :). Rivery was a bit of a diamond in the rough. The course was obviously redesigned when the City put in some playground equipment and landscaping. Signage is non-existent in places and plain wrong in other places. In spite of the signage issues, the course is actually pretty cool. If you go, go with someone who knows the way around and you'll enjoy it. The newer holes are really well through-out IMO. It looks like the local group put a lot of time and effort into keeping the course alive. I hope they're still working on it because this course will be good when it's really finished. hole 11 is one of the most picturesque holes in TX, even if it is an acerun. Giant boulders with trees threaded between them frame a nice yellow-top basket. I did not have my camera but I will next time :).

Now, Wichita Falls! c'mon group get signed up :). It's not that far and the tournament is going to be a blast. If we only get 50 people, they're going to be splitting a LOT of added cash and merch :)

oceanjones

Yes, KC. I know I can get in for Am Worlds. There are only 144 Open spots...I don't know if I can get one or not. I'm not going to Am Worlds to win Am Worlds, I just want to play. I don't want to risk not getting to play by taking cash then getting squeezed out of Open. It really was not a tough decision. I made up my mind a long time ago to wait till after Worlds.

Mar 05 2009, 12:42 PM
That brings the offer of bags to 5. Thanks. I just got a call from Steve Harris and my McKinney locals asking what discs we need. I guess they are taking a collection for us to look through. With all our plastic and bags and my stereo they got away with about 3K worth of our stuff.

I've often wondered how I would do if I had to throw all foreign discs. I'll find out this weekend in Wichita Falls. Aside from the two Buzzzes that I've had in my bag for two years, I will not have a problem replacing my discs. Part of my disc selection philosophy is only throwing discs that can be easily and cheaply replaced. I had a complete set of backups, they were in the truck though...

baldguy

Mar 19 2009, 12:52 PM
True, DeLa, from what I have heard, is a great course to see, but I was amused when you said, if you get the chance to head north to Santa Cruz. That's kinda like saying, after someone has said, we are going from the DFW airport to Arlington to play Veterans, "if you get the chance to head south to Houston..."

There's a little bit of real estate between LA and SCruz.

Was 9am Saturday Mesquite the consensus?

baldguy
Mar 20 2009, 03:39 PM
It sounded like round 1 at 8am, round 2 at 10am. That works well for us, since we have stuff to do tomorrow afternoon

oceanjones
Mar 21 2009, 12:47 AM
I thought it was only one stroke if you went in and got it out...

okcacehole
Mar 21 2009, 01:09 AM
Watts and I told everyone 9am today at TL since nobody ever set on something for sure on Thursday...

Guess we will just see people out there since there are now 8, 9 and 10 am tee times :)

We made it out to the Bon today Giles - #1 is back and to the left..old spot was much better IMO

few other new placements and new baskets on the course..unfortunately the course looked terrible overall..

we need Shari calling the city and telling them to MOW..

Frank Phillips got one of his first rounds in today with us..

too great to see 3 newbies in the same week

okcacehole
Apr 15 2009, 07:54 PM
Thursday GB - 5:30 start time - we are playing forwards but will get some of the "extra" holes in for sure...backwards last week was too much with so many others on the course

Would like to see what everyone thinks about heading to the Lake on Thursdays also or other courses close enough for all of our jobs and houses

See you all tomorrow - keep that rain away until we drop that last putt

baldguy
Apr 16 2009, 02:23 AM
I vote yes for playin the lake sometimes... maybe a rotation like we used to have?

BTW - If anyone wants to pick up a CFR Destroyer or TeeRex-X for the 2nd TitleDISC Open, please let me know and I'll set it aside. I won't be able to play tomorrow, but I'll see most of you this weekend :)

I would not have missed it...it was an honor and a privilege. And it was a great party, a great time. Every wedding should have a disc golf basket present.

A few highlights for me...

Shawn "Shabookie" Hunter took $5 off of me by snaging the garter belt. Best money I ever spent.

Deidre cutting the cake...wow...the look in her eye when she got ahold of those two knives.

Nana...'nuff said.

Can someone drop me an e-mail to my yahoo account (ejubin) when you decide where you're playing this week (4/23); I'm gonna try to make it out. Please send start time and official course name so I can look it up on DGCR. I don't want to end up at Towne Lake if everyone else is at Lake Lewisville.

Thanks,
ERic

I'm pretty sure the plan is Lake Park in Lewisville for this week. That's where I'll be, anyway :)

okcacehole
Apr 21 2009, 03:50 PM
Lake Lewisville on Thursday - starting at 5:30pm

What time would I need to leave 75 & 635 intersection to get there for 5:30 (rush hour)? GoogleMaps says take 635 to 35 and it's 25mi/30minutes, but that's gotta be no traffic.

okcacehole
Apr 22 2009, 02:42 AM
4:30 would be safe..5pm if traffic is moving, but that would be a push

exczar
Apr 22 2009, 03:07 PM
You should check the traffic before you leave. You also have the options of going up Central and taking the GB Tollway across to Stemmons, or going across LBJ to the Dallas North Tollway up to GB and across to Stemmons.

ERicJ
Apr 22 2009, 03:16 PM
What's the Dallas traffic website?

gnduke
Apr 23 2009, 01:30 AM
not sure, I use this

google maps - traffic (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=32.85248,-96.900787&spn=0.40032,0.86792&z=11&layer=t)

Nice ace Adam!

That was a fun round. Haleigh and Adam with the 4 stroke swing in 3 holes. 4th Thursday of the month at Lake Park?

baldguy
Apr 24 2009, 06:06 PM
Every thursday? :D Once it gets hotter out, the shade at lake park is going to be so much nicer than GB. I'd vote for 2 thursdays a month @ the lake...

baldguy
Apr 29 2009, 05:57 PM
so, where we playin this week? The lake again (because of the wet)? That would be awesome :)

okcacehole
Apr 29 2009, 07:33 PM
actually GB it is...it will be fine out there..it hasn't rained since Monday and GB always dries fast..just depends on the water color for losing discs :)

I should be there at 4:30 with Gary - bring me a Pro valk if you have one - white

baldguy
Apr 29 2009, 08:43 PM
I only have yellow left, if at all. Next stock order is happening in a couple weeks.

BTW - it's raining balls right now... GB is gonna be sloppy

So they cut my hours at work so I have fridays off...... Anyone else off? What will the course conditions be like at town lakes if we dont get any more rain? I plan on playing both Mckinney courses this Friday.

Giles
May 14 2009, 02:31 PM
I haven't played it in a few weeks but from what I heard at the AC mini last night was the grass was crazy tall and Ron talked to the city about it. They are going to try and get out and cut some but it isn't going to be perfect. I'd think that will be done today but I can't be sure. They also gave Ron some mosquito tables so hopefully that will help with the blood suckers. It was only muddy in the spots that are always muddy at AC so I assume TL is very playable, problem areas might be around hole 2's basket and 12's fairway.

Big E
May 14 2009, 04:43 PM
Maybe I should wait to play it until it get mowed then! Hope town lakes is not to muddy!
