From 10-6-05:

There are things-a-brewing "again" in Plainview. I'm hoping that they organize and someone steps up and makes things happen. More later....

11-13-08 - This time it is highly likely that a course will be installed. The Rotary Club is giving support...and they make things happen. More later...again.

Maybe the plains area will sprout DG courses like it has playa lakes

We would have a course about every square mile....one would be named McAlister Park. The Plainview area has some potential. There is a draw that runs through them park, there are two large berms, and then two seperate areas with high tree (differnt types) density. I'm not sure what the constrictions will be. I plan to be up there in the next week or so to get more detail.

Update. I had a meeting with two of the key local Plainview DG supporters. They are VERY excited about getting DG into Plainview. We discussed many things related to the DG layout, etc. The berms in the park will make the course very unique to the area. Likely the berms will be used for about 4-5 shots (tee pads or baskets on top). The berms are slightly smaller than a highway overpass. We walked the area to be used. Playgrounds, parking lots, memorials, baseball fields, a soccer field, etc. take out much of the park for DG play. There is still a large area with ample trees of different sizes, ages, and types that will provide good obstacles. We somewhat figured out some general location and flow issues. I'll likely have another meeting in a week or two to get a little more detail and begin to get a layout set. Winter is upon us, but it is realistic that baskets could be in installed in the next few months.

Well, like all courses that go in....hurry up and wait, then critical and not, etc. Baskets and hardware are to be ordered soon. I'll update as things progress a little further. After baskets are planted I'll let everone know and we'll have a kickoff tourney!

Mar 09 2009, 03:06 PM
The course (highly likely) will be a double loop nine and nine. The first nine will be to east portion of the park in rows of trees and around baseball fields and a soccer field. This nine will have some tunnel shots and some elevated shots. The second nine will be mostly in the west and north side of the park (likely). This nine has quite a few tables, playground areas, memorials, buildings, parking areas, baseball field, fountain, tree nursery, and so on that make it a difficult (no challenging) area. Shawn, a local player, will be tweaking things. We'll probably have a portable basket event in a few weeks...stay tuned. Contact me for thoughts.

The City of Plainview, the Rotary Club of Plainview, Wayland Baptist University, and a few volunteers will host a portable basket tourney on March 28th.

Running Water Draw Park
(Yes, it’s that big park just south of Plainview off of I-27)

The course offers shots to/from the large berms, and a great assortment of trees!

This will be a portable basket event - so bring ‘em if you gottem. (Permanent baskets are ordered and will be installed soon)

Entry - $TBD (but probably only $2/round) We're just trying to ease the locals into organized play.

Format – TBD (but likely will play random doubles) Again, we just want to get the locals to see and experience disc golf from good players.

Ace and CTB – likely, and we will take a donation for them (hint)...we could use a few discs, towels, etc.

Basket setup and register at 9:00 – 10:00
First round – 10:00, from rec tees then pro tees on ‘front nine’
Lunch break & Move baskets to the ‘back nine’
Second round – apx 2:00, from rec tees, then pro tees on ‘back nine’

Everyone is welcome!

Dang weather! :( The Panhandle weather is frightfull! Both I-27 and I-40 have been closed. The forcast shows more to come tonight. The morning hours in Plainview are going to be very cold, very wet. But the afternoon weather sure looks to be a littl better...mid 50's, windy...good enough for disc golf weather. So, for safety reasons, we're going to just offset the portable event by a few hours. Everyone should try to get in an early lunch, as setup AND registration will be from 12-1. At 1 we'll have a short players meeting, etc. and then get started follwing the regular schdule:

Basket setup and register - NOW at 12:00 – 1:00

First round – NOW player meeting at 1:00, round 1 immediately after, from rec tees then pro tees on ‘front nine’

Short break & Move baskets to the ‘back nine’

Second round – NOW at apx 4:00, from rec tees, then pro tees on ‘back nine’

Tally cards, etc. with light left in the day!

Done deal. After a postponement and a little of a rough start...it is hard to coordinate setting up portables in areas where no one is familiar with layout/etc, we had two full rounds of play. The weather was not all that cold, but was windy from the NW, especially in the first and most of the way through the second rounds. We had 26 players for the first round and for the second round gained a few and lost a few. There were about ten-ish players from Plainview. Most of them had never played in any type of organized DG event. Levelland supported and brought and moved baskets (thanks!). Most of the remaining players were from Lubbock. Several Lubbock players brought baskets. Chris Lee especially helped out a bunch by moving many baskets (hazard of having a pickup). Many players donated discs (and I forgot to thank them all, sorry) including: James, Eric, Larry, Windriders, Patrick, and likely others.

First nine - played rec tees, then pro tees, to same basket location, best shot: Brad/Dillon 53, Patrick/Larry 55, Matt/Eric 55, Chris/Eric 58, Rocky/Lance 59, Rob/Shawn 59. CTB Brad. Ace CTB ? First and only circle 3 - Patrick/Larry on hole 4. High hole score in high wind - 6 by Shoot/Dang.

Second nine - played rec tees, then pro tees, to same basket location, best shot: Chris/Shawn 50, Brad/Isaac 51, Patrick/Josh 54, Matt/Larry 55, Scott/James 55, Rocky/Dillon 55, Darin/Justin 55. CTB Chris. Ace CTB ? Only one OB for all cards in the round - hole 15 Rocky/Dillon (ouch)...and it turns out was the only 5 as well.

I think the scores were spread as well as expected in high wind and for best shot semi-random doubles...but can't read too much into it. Score variation will be vastly different for singles...and some course adjustment.

Overall, I was please with flow, difficlty of the course and individual holes, shot usage (with a few exceptions that I'll try to adjust), distance (with a few adjustments), elevation use, tree use, wind direction use, and so on. I really did not hear of any big issues. Please let me know your thoughts.

Baskets are in Plainview (in boxes, not in ground yet). I'm to meet in Plainview again this week sometime. We still need to figure out a few items (OB situations, etc.). The Rotary Club is to meet with the city and city parks/rec and discuss final layout, installation, etc. So, baskets likely will be in ground within a reasonable two months....and hopefully sooner. Concrete tee pads will likely soon follow.

Upcoming tournies in Ft. Stockton, Big Spring, and Amarillo. Likely will fit in a Levelland/Portales/Clovis event in a few months...then by that time, back to Plainview to try out those new baskets!!!!! :D

I had a meeting with Plainview's P&R Director on Thurs. The course is on track to be put in. The P&R will help along with many of the local Rotary and Wayland volunteers.

I asked many of the players for any input (thanks). And, I observed many of the teams play and really looked at the card scores...those OB's concerned me. We'll adjust hole 4 tee pads to the west a little. We'll then move hole 3 basket considerably longer....and make it a much, much more challenging hole. I plan to tweak a few other things also, but generally the course will hopefully be installed as we played it.

I'll let everyone know when installation happens. Maybe soon after, we could again trek to Plainview for a couple of rounds.

Rotary presents plans for disc golf course

Plans for a proposed disc golf course in Running Water Draw Regional Park were presented to the Plainview City Council at a work session Thursday.

Dr. Charles Starnes, president of Plainview's Rotary Club, spoke on behalf of his club.

The project would use club funds, but parks and recreation labor to install the 18-hole course.

Thirty experienced disc golfers participated in a trial tournament March 28 and gave positive feedback on the course layout. Council member Wendell Dunlap asked Starnes what kind of maintenance the course would require.

"All the maintenance is already being done by the parks department because they mow. That's all we need after the course is installed," said Starnes. The new Rotaract Club will serve as the liaison between the club, the city and Wayland Baptist University and will handle organizing future tournaments.

The city's Park Advisory Board suggested the course be built in Regional Park rather than along the new Hike and Bike Trail.

"We don't do all the maintenance along the trail so we couldn't guarantee the shape of the area, but we can in Regional Park," said City Manager Greg Ingham.

The council should take action on the agenda item at Tuesday's regular meeting, set to start at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

City Council Meeting 04-15-09

The Plainview City Council approved the plan for a new disc golf course to be constructed in Runningwater Draw Regional Park at Tuesday's regular scheduled meeting.

The proposed course, to be located near the softball and soccer fields by the YMCA, will be paid for by the Plainview Rotary Club with installation being directed by the city's parks department.

Dr. Charles Starnes, president of the Rotary Club, told the council the only maintenance required for the course is already being done when city employees mow the grass.

Starnes said once concrete is poured and the poles to support the baskets, which are the golfers' targets, are in place, maintenance for the course is minimal.

He assured council members the baskets are virtually tamper proof.

"Someone would need tools to tear them down," he said.

Starnes touted the new course as meeting specifications of the Professional Disc Golf Association and received an "elegant" rating from the association. In Starnes words, "That means it would warrant a trip to Plainview to play this course for dedicated disc golfers."

According to Starnes, the course is designed so golfers will not interfere with picnickers or children at the park as it utilizes space that is not currently used by the public on a regular basis.

The course is expected to cost the Rotary Club about $7,000 and, Starnes estimated, should take 2-3 weeks to complete construction.

Next up will be the basket installations. There are to be triple positions in the future, but will only put in one position at this time. Similarly, concrete tee pads will go in later. A course sign will be (re)built in the future as well. Scorecards and maps will soon be available. I'll let everyone know when the baskets are in the ground. Then, we should plan a day in Plainview!

Apr 21 2009, 11:15 AM
On Monday April 20, 2009, 18 basket positions and a practice basket position were installed. They are going to assemble, etc. the baskets and install them (likely) next week (Monday April 27). Yeah! They're going to mark the rec pads temporarily with wood fronts. Concrete pads will be coming later. I'll check into a kickoff event in early June (need to check dates, etc.).

Baskets are in the ground!!! Tees are yet to be completely marked...likely will be done next week (May 6th week). Course sign, true distances, scorecard, etc. will soon be addressed. Soon as a few things get taken care of, I'll post the course at the PDGA course site and at dgcoursereview.com.

5-5-09 most rec tees have been marked (wood buried in soil). Don't have course info just yet to populate course information sites. Tentative kick-off event for June 13...more later though.

May 16 2009, 11:01 AM
I still don't have full course information (distances, exact lat/long, etc), but will soon. The course is open for play. Baskets are in and at least rec tees are marked (not sure about pro tee markings). A kick-ff event is planned for June 13th. I'll make and send out some flyers soon. Likely, we'll play rec tees first round and then pro tees the second round. We'll do singles (get some records set).

New baskets must attract the worst in people. Someone completely bent over two brand new baskets at the park. Also, tee markers are being damaged and so on. Hopefully, the 'new' will wear off and things will be left alone. I still don't have the course info to load (hopefull will so before June 13 mini tourney).

STOLEN BASKET. Hole 11 was stolen over the weekend. The basket was a Mach IV with a circle '11' plate. Everyone, please monitor...

The 13th at Plainview is still a go. C'mon.

Jun 02 2009, 07:07 PM
Everyone is welcome to play in the event on the 13th (probably should have played a few times before though). The whole purpose is the mostly to introduce the locals to a new course/rules/tourney play, to introduce locals to some of the area players, and for that matter allow the locals to begin to meet eachother and begin to organize (my time is very limited).

p-katt
Jun 07 2009, 12:06 PM
A couple of things. Registration for the June 13 event is from 8:00 - 9:00. No entries will be taken after 9:00.

The stolen 11 basket, was found stuffed under some evergreen trees in the park. It's back in place and ready to go. Hopefully once the course becomes more played, the recent vandalism will cease.

Plainview June 13 (on flyer sent out to misc players, given to many, and posted at Mackenzie):

Entry - $5 for am $10 for pro ($1 will automatically go to the ace pot)
TBD (based on signups), but likely will have two am divisions (adv and novice/jr's)
and two pro divisions (open and masters).

Format – Singles for two rounds: first round rec tees, lunch break, second round pro tees

Ace pot (automatic $1 taken from entry) and CTB (probably a disc, etc payout) Donations accepted (hint)

Register Sat am – 8:00 to 9:00. NO ENTRIES WILL BE TAKEN AFTER 9:00 AM.
First round – Apx 9:30, rec tees
Suggested lunch at sponsors
Second round – Apx 2:00, pro tees

I would like all of the local players to assist with pre tourney misc (I cannot arrive until Sat am), general setup (closest-to-basket markers), registration, scoring, awards, etc. PLEASE contact me.

Oh, did I indicated clearly that no entries will be taken after 9:00?

Jun 11 2009, 05:27 PM
I've had quite a few people contact me from Lubbock and elsewhere that are planning on playing the one day Plainview event. I'll gladly accept some help and some donations.

Weather (as of 6-10 Wed):

Jun 13 Saturday
Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 90s and lows in the low 60s. 10% chance of precip. 11 mph winds.

I want to see some good course records for rec morning round and pro afternoon round.

Oh, register from 8-9......not 9:01.

Jun 14 2009, 06:10 PM
(I spent two hours reviewing and posting today, but when I clicked send, I had ‘timed out’ and lost all that I had written. So, this is a much shortened version).

Thanks for those who helped and gave misc. Tom Tom gave a bunch of discs. He and the Amarillo crew then gave more money for the ace pot. John Stockmyer gave a bunch of discs. The Windriders donated discs. Shawn (a local) helped with some of the initial setup. Hayley Cox, a local writer, helped greatly with registration. Rob helped with registration, scoring, payouts, etc. Larry helped as little as possible. Thanks to all (and those I may have missed).

The weather for the event was windy in the am and light wind and very muggy in the afternoon. I really heard not complaints about the course or tourney. Some said it was ‘very tough’, ‘I’ll have to have more shots in my bag to play well here’, ‘some of the lines were tough to find’ (I’ve been really reading much of Houck, these are pretty good comments).

Winners, overall one round rec, one round pro tees (except rec play rec tees both rounds), only paid players listed:
Open - Tom Tom (Amarillo) 106, Cody Buckalew (Roswell) 118, Jon Kaylor (Amarillo) 121
Cody has been playing only five months!
Master – Vicente 107, Rob 111, Tom Greensburg 114.
Advanced – Chris Saldana (Amarillo) 110, Ben Solis and caddy Candace 116, Scott Buller 121.
Rec/Novice/Jr – David Brown (Amarillo), Braxton “The King” Stockmyer, 127, Angel Trujillo (V’s son) 129, Mike May 138.

No CTP was hit, so we had a throw off (top four) for the cash and the extra cash and discs, that was donated (thanks again). Vicente took the closest. I had a CTP on round 1, hole 1 rec that I won. Round 2 CTP was on hole 10…Tom Greensburg took it.

We were to have a final 3 for top 3, but lighting was among us…so cancelled.

Round misc:
Best rec tee round – Tom Tom and Vicente with 50. Then 54, 54, 54, 55, 56, 56……
Best pro tee round – Tom Tom and Chris Saldana with 56. Then 57, 57, 57, 58, 59….

Amazings:
TT had 2’s on both rounds for hole’s 10, 17. Scott did same on 16. TT also had the only 2 on pro nine, I had the only one on rec 9 (BUT I saw that it was written on my card as a 3! Oh well). Jon Kaylor had the only 2 on 18 (from rec). Chris Tomlinson had the only 2 on rec 13. Rob had an amazing kneeling long hyzer shot for the only pro tee 2 on 13. I had the only rec tee 2 on hole 1, Rob had the only pro tee 2. V had the only 2 on hole 8 (from rec). On hole 12, V was throwing to the closer tree, thinking the basket was just behind it. Well, his disc flipped and rolled way past all the way to the next tree….under the basket, for the only 2 on the hole (rec tee). V started extremely hot (hole 10 on the rec round) with 3 of the first 4 holes birdied.

Not very amazing:
The high rec score was an 8 on hole 16. The high pro tee score was a 9 on hole 5. I had the most OB’s at 3 (I just cannot play well if I stay up on my foot late, run the course prior to event, run here/there, meeting, no warm-up, etc …again, oh well).

Very sad:
There were no Plainview players. Well I guess…amazing.

I just got with some of the locals and have assisted them in trying to finalize tee positions. We used a GPS to finally get them set better. The rec tees will be concreted first (not sure how soon though). I asked them to make at least a small mark for the pro tees. I'm hoping that some signage (course and tee) will be installed soon. Things are coming together, more slowly than preferred, but there is progress being made.

Aug 30 2009, 12:02 PM
STILL no tee pads....and most tee locations are no longer marked well. Wood that was placed at the rec tee's are missing. No pro tees are marked. I played where the pro tees will be (close to where we played in our little event) last week (+2). I believe that the wait for pads has been on waiting for students to return to school (WBU) and then to help put the pads in, make a sign, etc. Hope, hope, hope, hope. I heard that there was a local Rotary member that wants to help out!

I called to see how they were progressing in Plainview. There was a Rotary meeting last night 11-5). They are in progress of securing funds for pads and signs. They hope to start in the next few weeks....hope, hope. The plan is to put a few pads in (pro and rec) until the course is completely finished. Locals, help will be needed through this process. PLEASE contact Rich or Charles.

Dec 11 2009, 11:18 AM
Pads are on their way! Rich said that the plan is to start at hole 1 and progress around the course putting pro and rec pads in for each hole. They have the forms out for the first five holes, but then ran into the very, very cold wet weather. The plan is to start and pour the week of the 14th! They'll progress around the course five holes (ten pads) at a time until done. I brought up the possibility of an Ice Bowl for Feb 2010. Hopefully the local Roteract group will consider running the event as a kickoff for the new course.

Jan 17 2010, 11:23 AM
I believe that by this weekend (Jan 17, 2010), that almost all of the tee pads (pro and rec) have been installed, although I've not called to confirm. Earlier this week they were set to go with several more (so something like 15 of 18 pads poured). They want to pull from installing an elevated pro bad on hole 10...dang. We'll just have to find an alternate. They are really, really set on being able to mow across pads. MAYBE, if pads get put in completely, we'll (locals run with some help) have a kickoff event soon....more later.

p-katt
Jan 19 2010, 08:39 PM
Okay! Yes, if weather holds, all pads....Pro and Rec....will be completed (in concrete) by the end of the week!!!! They're in process of getting course tee signs and a course info sign. I was told that there are many new players showing up. Now that the course can be 'seen', I really expect them to have a good boost in players. Also, there will be a formal kickoff event on April 3, 2010. Plainview has "The Fool's Cup" each year.....and disc golf will be part of the activities. Hmmm, 'The Fool's Disc Golf Tourney', 'The Fool's Flyer DG Tourney', 'Fooled You DG Tourney', etc. The Roteract group will be in charge of running the event. But, maybe before then I'll maybe run a quick event at the new course....yep, more later.

Jan 24 2010, 11:59 AM
Confirmed. All 18 holes now have a concrete pro and rec tee pad installed (yes, 36 pads). There are markers embedded into the pads themselves. Vertical tee markers with some distances, etc. will be coming. Likewise, a course sign is being worked on. I've already hear that local curiosity is there and that numbers of players has really increased lately. Fool's Cup is April 3. The Roteract group will be coordinating the event.

Feb 11 2010, 08:07 PM
I was through Plainview yesterday. I met with the TD for the Fool's Cup (April 3). Lance is gung ho and ready to have a great tourney. He'll be releasing formats, fees, etc. soon....and I'll try to post here and also flyers at courses in the area. Mostly, he wants to get DG introduced to potential players in Plainview and then re-introduce the course to the area Amarillo/Lubbock/Levelland/other players. He too heard about 'problems' that the baskets were in, but not pads (makes a course VERY confusing). BUT, tees are in. VERY good tees are in. 36 very nice concrete tees are in. On my way back down to Lubbock I got to stop in and 'play' the course in the snow (falling and also about two inches on the ground...and pads). If we can get past this weather streak, the course is absolutely ready for play. A few tips...hole 1 rec and pro are from on top of the berm. 1 to 9 flow clockwise generally. 10 pro is on the berm and it actually partially shares the same concrete rec 1 pad (kind of like that pad in Albuquerque's Roosevelt Park). Pro tees are very well markd with a big black number at the back of the concrete. Rec tees have a big gold number in the concrete. Baskets have a colored spoke to the next hole. And, tee signs and a course sign will be forthcoming. So, now go play-nview. Also visit DGCoursereview.com for more info and pictures to come sometime.

Numbers of players have jumped. I was told that there are now groups of players playing...like five groups at a time. The Fool's Cup DG event in coming together for April 3rd. There is to be a big BBQ around noon. During that time, there will be disc golf demo, showing the course, how to throw, and so on. Then, there will be a registration time period and then a round of play. Sponsors are being secured. More info coming soon on entry, exact times, etc. Go Play-nview.
