I am using this post to brainstorm an idea of holding a Doubles Tournament at College Lodge on Saturday October 18th.

I'm looking for some type of feedback as to who is interested.

If I can get a decent count then I would like to take this even further than just a message board post.

Check the PFDS schedule in the fall, especially to avoid the Oct 12 Schenley 20th anniversary touirnament and the Scholastic tourneys through out Sept and Oct.

I'd love to play in a doubles tourney.

October 18th has a conflict with the Scholastic Event #4. What exactly are the scholastic events?

they are a string of DG tourney events for High School players. J Gary runs them quite successfully.
I believe there are 6 total. most coincide with respective monthlies. I believe there is an overall event winner and a winner from each mini tourney.

anyway, at that time of year its basically impossible to not conflict with SOMETHING and the date you have picked out seems about the best. I would run with it J Thompson.

btw, missed you this week at the lodge. tweeked my knee on number 5 and still beat some peeps to bring home tag #3. :D

Yeah Josh, I heard about your knee. That is unfortunate. Hopefully it will get better. August is a crazy month for me as I'm in a couple of weddings, but nothing cool or anything like going to the world championships.

I'm not sure what I'll do about this doubles tournament, I hate to squeeze something in, and it be a lackluster event, but perhaps holding it this year will pave the way for it being a permanent staple on the PFDS tour ; )

I think it could be a decent event for the lodge. From what I remember the lodge used to hold a tournament in the fall; formally the collegiate championships, but it never really compiled good numbers, and I don't think it ever got higher than a c-tier, not that pdga tiering matters to me personally. I noticed that PFDS doesn't have a doubles tournament on the calendar, and I've always enjoyed the type of golf that comes with Doubles Tournaments - decent payouts, and less personal stress.

Would interfering with the scholastic event on the 18th deter numbers, other than J. Gary not being in attendence?

Who would I contact to perhaps get this on the current PFDS calendar?

As for the Scholastic Series, you probably picked the right one to bump up against. As Stella or Kurt already pointed out, these series events usually coincide with monthly tournamements at the respective courses and you wouldn't want to go up against Deer Lakes, Knob or Moraine. There may be some tournament/league players at Phillips, but I believe that particular event draws the smallest crowd of non-scholastic competitors.

Unfortuntately, I won't be able to make it that weekend as I will be competing in the Hawk Hollow Open in Virginia. A doubles tournament at the lodge sounds fun for sure! I like doubles events.....especially the "alternating shot" format which I think is the truest test toward the strength (or weakness) of a team. I've considered a doubles event at Lakeview....maybe one of these years I'll make that happen. :)

Thanks guys.

I'm going to check in on a couple other places to see if the 18th will conflict with anything already scheduled with the co-op.

Jerry, I'm a big fan of alternate shot as well, and will definitely incorporate that into some of the tournament. I also like, best score doubles, and worst score doubles. I like everything other than worst shot doubles. I've seen doubles teams at arms with each other over that type of doubles.

and Gooch's favorite, the 666!

54 holes in one day at the Lodge = you won't see Gotcher at that event! :D

During the 90's, I played in several National Doubles championships at Old Settlers Park, Round Rock, Tx. John Houck (TD) used the following format:

1st round: Best shot
2nd round: Best Disc (both partners play the hole separately & use the best score)
3rd round: Alternating shot
4th round: 666 (6 holes of Best shot; 6 holes of Alternating shot; 6 holes of worst shot)

Worst shot is definitely challenging to say the least....and both players have to make the putt!

54 holes in a day at the lodge, no chance.

2 rounds of 18:
1st round normal doubles
2nd round 1-6 best score, 7-12 worst score, 13-18 alternate shot

I was joking Gooch. you wouldnt see Stella play that either!

after two rounds during the PA States my legs felt like J-E-L-L-O.

bring your own partner?

jthompson

bring your own partner.

Jerry, 666 doubles can make you want to kill your partner. That stuff is tough. Drain a 40 putt, then watch your partner miss it. That sucks.

open and am division?

jthompson
Aug 06 2008, 11:24 AM
Open, Am. Possible mixed division depending on numbers.

If you're an AM and your partners a Pro, you play pro.

Haven't thought about price per division. Again, all of this only goes down if nothing is currently scheduled with the co-op.

I hope the day is free, cuz once again, J Thompson is coming up with killer ideas for IDLA. 1st the sunday league, now doubles tourney.

Dang son.

All I want now is a shot at that private you got hidden away carrying along a gallon of that homebrew. ;)

Been there....done that. Once watched a dude tee first on our card and he aced hole 7 at Old Settlers Park during the worst shot format. The look on his partner's face was priceless... :D

As for the scheduling conflictions, how about November? There is not much going on that month aside from just three regularly scheduled monthlies. I heard last night that the Scholastic Series may be tweaked.....possibly switching the Phillips event with the Economy temp course event. We'll see what J Gary and Rex decide on that switch-a-roo...

when do the baskets come out? that may be the issue there.

November 22nd is the only Saturday without a monthly. By then you're dealing with weather factors, and most importantly, lack of daylight.

Stella,

I just measured my private course with a GPS:
A tees measure approx 2930
B tees measure approx 3110

12 holes, two tees each hole - par 72,
best i've shot to date is a 70 (maybe a round a day)
OB varieties on everyhole.
I have personally gone OB on everyhole, and have lost 11 discs to date in my pond....pisses me off.

for everything minus the lost discs, VERRRY N I C E. I LIKE.

I LIKE MORE WHEN PLAY. WITH BEER, VERY NICE. ME LIKE.

Monthly dates can be rescheduled to accomodate other local/regional events. Likewise, the Sunday morning Lodge round could be rescheduled or cancelled as well....

Just a suggestion.
